Threaded Golly for threaded Soup Search?

Post by doccolinni » May 18th, 2010, 11:48 pm

Hi, people, I'm a new guy. :D

I have a quad-core processor (AMD Phenom II X4 955) and I was wondering if it's possible to run Golly in a threaded manner, for example running four instances of it simultaneously (like I used to do with Folding@Home), so I can make a better (and faster) contribution to the soup search? I didn't want to try it before asking because I don't know whether this will screw up the script's synchronisation with the server in any way (or possibly something else).

Is there a "proper" way of making Golly and the Soup Search script run in threads, or is it possible and safe to run four instances of Golly running the Soup Search script, or is it not doable at all? I keep my PC on 24/7 and I think it's tragic that when I'm away from it (which is approx. 75% of the time) three of my four CPU cores do nothing when they could be searching for soups. :>

Well I decided to just try it and lo and behold it works! :D

But unfortunately either Golly or the script (or both) seem to become relatively unstable when four instances of them are running - after approx. half an hour one of the Gollys will crash (actually cease to respond so I'll be forced to manually kill it), then after another twenty or so minutes another one and then the remaining two continue to work normally. :-|

I took care not to run them all at once but approximately three minutes apart so two instances will never be uploading the census data at the same time, so it's not an issue with that. I don't understand why this is happening.

Hrm, I have a dual core that I often leave running two instances of the script and I haven't had problems with the script or Golly becoming unstable. I'm not sure what would be causing problems when three or four of them are running. :/

I'm running four instances of Golly in parallel on my 4-core system without any problems.

Maybe your CPU is overheating? That's all I can think of, although I'd expect the stability of the entire system to suffer in that case, rather than the problems being limited to Golly; and of course, if you ran Folding@Home without problems before, then that's a pretty strong sign that the problem lies elsewhere, too. Nevertheless, it might be worth checking - just in case.

Is it your HashLife-dedicated memory? With four cores and shared RAM, the HashLife memory for each instance of Golly should be (at most) one fifth of your overall memory.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately this is still happening and I still have no idea why it's happening.

Also, it turns out that two out of four instances ceasing to respond and leaving the other two to work normally was a premature thing to say - I left two instances running over night and in the morning one of them was not responding, the other was running fine (and it still is). It remains to be seen whether this one instance while working alone will crash, if it won't then it's obviously a problem that only happens when running multiple instances of Golly with Soup Search script (actually I have no idea whether each instance of Golly running the script has anything to do with the crashes or would four instances of Gollys stop responding even without running the script, I guess that's another thing to test).

My CPU is not overheating, I've got Core Temp (http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/) installed and when all four cores are loaded to 100% the temperature dances in-between 53°C and 55°C (AMD Phenom II X4 is safe on temperatures of over 60°C).

I've got 4 GB of RAM, I'm not sure what the issue with HashLife-dedicated memory could be... Are you perhaps saying that there could be an issue with HashLife caused by ganged (dual-channel) RAM mode? I can easily switch the RAM to operate in unganged (single-channel) mode to see whether that will stop the freezing of Golly instances if that's what you're implying.

I have no idea what the issue may be about, so I'll post my dxdiag just in case someone is able to see something in there which might cause this problem, although I suppose it would then be occurring with other programs too, but nevertheless:

The instance that was left running alone has also stopped responding, so it's not a multiple-instance-related problem. :<

I've got a theory though. When I ran the four instances, in the Task Manager under Processes I right-clicked on each one of them and set them to run on a single core (one on the first, the other on the second, etc., not all four on the same core), maybe it's that that causes freezes every time? I'll try running four instances without assigning each to its own core and see if that makes them stop responding.

Or maybe it's simple and is because the Soup Search doesn't work well with the latest Python 2.6.5?

I'll make some more tests before trying to switch to an earlier version of Python 2.

No, it's not about Python version, they still stop responding. What confuses me the most is why how long an instance of Golly will last before ceasing to respond is apparently inversely proportional to how many instances are running simultaneously. :-|

Ah dang, I give up. Soup searching isn't for me, obviously.

STOP WITH THE SWEARING!!! I have, on many occasions, used more than one copy of Golly at once, but I haven't yet run the Soup Search for one, much less two, so I can't really help you guys there.

Inversely proportional? That means that, with more instances running, they take less time before ceasing to respond. That seems credible, if you imagine your computer as a radioactive atom, and the instances of Golly as excess alpha particles. As it loses alpha particles, it gets closer to stability, until it is stable with one instance of Golly. The more stable it is (fewer instances of Golly), the less likely it is to radiate alpha particles.

In fact, that was a terrible analogy. Sorry!
