Period multiplication does not count.
Surprisingly, a lot of puffers don't have a volatile period. For example, the Schick engine has a non-volatile period. No matter what you do, it'll always have a period of 12n. The Coe ship's period is slightly more volatile. There are a few rakes that rephase the Coe ship, but it's not easy.
EDIT: As dvgrn points out, technically everything is a multiple of 4 or 2. So I'll try something else.
A puffer spits out exhaust at some base period. Its total period is then some multiple of this base period. A puffer displays period volatility when its exhaust is perturbed in such a way that changes the base period.Code: Select all

The Oblique Speed of a spaceship will be (m,n)(m+n)c/p(I am not sure if I am using the traditional letters). For example, Sir Robin will have a oblique speed of (2,1)c/2 and the oblique puffer(the only one I could think of) will have a speed of (24,19)43c/236 Edit 1:Where did the 6 go? Fixed(it has a normal speed of (24,19)c/236)

I've got a stupid idea.
loopgun: a gun using a x(x = g or h or b or p) to 2x conduit, to let the "x" part circle.
Then after typing these I've got AN EVEN MORE stupid idea.
hasslergun: a gun using hassler-partials to construct the spaceship.

I've mentioned this on Discord a few times, but until at least November 8, Herschel climbers are now Herschel walkers. This is to improve our site ranking, as many people will be looking for the other meaning of Herschel Walker.
"Offset LOM" and "Offset honey farm" are names for active regions. Without my computer, I can't show them here, but the former is the one that's hassled in Karel's p177, while the latter leaves a bi-block with phi-sparks being generated near the end. There's also "house tie boat" (yes, it's up there on the list) and "pre-anvil" (the one that creates an anvil when it hits certain objects). Someone on Discord called the pre-anvil "anvillar" as a portmanteau of anvil + caterpillar, but I'm not seeing any connection to the caterpillar.
The L-hexomino is the one that's a line of five plus one sideways at one end (5o$o!, if I'm doing it correctly, since I'm typing RLEs by hand). It creates two blinkers relatively far apart, and if you look at p116 in b3s23osc, you'll see it. It's much more common than census.rle indicates. In case you're wondering about the other one that looks like an L (4o$o$o!), that's the V-hexomino if it needs a name, but it's not as essential since it doesn't have its own unique evolutionary sequence.

Re: Create your own terminology
Duodecahash, probably. It's octohash (octo=eight) because there are eight different ways you can orient a pattern on a square grid using rotations and reflections. On a hex grid, there are six rotations, and then reflect the pattern and rotate it six times again, so that makes 12. Correct me if I'm wrong.confocaloid wrote: ↑October 19th, 2022, 4:55 pmWhat would be an equivalent of the octohash function for patterns on the hexagonal tiling?

"Ripple" was coined by me in 2021 on Discord, but I'll define it here so forum-only people can see it: a word for scratches and imperfections on the edge of an exploding pattern which leave a mark on the inside of the explosion instead of unraveling the whole. Below is a particularly good ripple example:

Re: Create your own terminology
The two very common sparks on the right need names. The two objects on the left are fairly common examples of patterns that become those sparks.

Ah, yes, the well-known LL spark and evil-Muppet spark... (no, I didn't really recognize them, and I can't claim that those are their traditional names).hotdogPi wrote: ↑February 7th, 2023, 10:23 amThe two very common sparks on the right need names. A Hensel rule is said to be
- forum searchable when its canonical rulestring does not contain any minuses,
- strongly forum searchable when it is forum searchable and each of two parts of its rulestring is nonempty,
- weakly forum searchable when there are no minuses in one of two parts of its rulestring (in the birth part or in the survival part).

Re: Create your own terminology
The effective rule of a still life is formed by combining the birth part of the maxrule and the survival part of the minrule. For example, the effective rule of xs8_32da is B2ikn34-erw5678/S2ace4y, since the minrule is B/S2ace4y and the maxrule is B2ikn34-erw5678/S012345678.
Also, here's a 2-generation box-negator (see page 4):

"Alternative rock" for a fishhook acting as a rock from its one-cell tail. Named alternative because the more common type is a rock that's equivalent to a snake.
