What should a component that turns a hat into xs16_c8al96z311 be called? Add against loaf? Add hang loaf?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

A cutout synthesis is one where all the cells of the object that one wants to synthesize are already there, and one is simply removing all surrounding cells. Example cutout synthesis for a glider:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
2bo6bo$obo7bo2bo$b2o5b3obo$12b3o$4b2o$3bobo2b2o$5bo2bobob2o$10bobobo$
10b2o2bo4bo$14b2ob2o$18b2o!
EDIT: Example cutout synthesis for an LWSS:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
17bo$15b2o$16b2o2$2bo$obo10bo$b2o7bobobo3b2o$6b2obob2obo2bobo$7bobo3b
o3bo$6bo2b4o3b2o$6b2o$11b2o5b3o$b2o8b2o5bo$obo16bo$2bo2$7b3o$9bo$8bo!
I skip the back spark since it's not needed for the LWSS to survive in the long term.

"BTL": A suggested name for xp0_27x33, or its ash. The name is a pun on "block + TL predecessor collision" and "blinker with loaf". Not to be confused with "BTC" or "BTS".

4. Hole spark. One generation is a loaf with one cell missing, and other is a beehive with one cell missing. (How do we not have a name for this yet if it's so common?)
That is called the L spark, e.g. in two pre-L hasslers:

Athenian: What we actually refer to when we refer to "Spartan" circutry nowadays. Includes the eater 2, the Snark still life, the weld in the Scorbie splitter, etc. Anything that slmake can make. Spartan retains its older, stricter definition.

That might cause some confusion. "Athenian" has been used a few times already, originally to mean "anything that isn't Spartan". The term never caught on, maybe because "non-Spartan" was good enough for the purpose.

Pattern Engineer; pattern engineering. If your reading this, the defs should be obvious, I think. I've been using these terms orllay for a while, but have not found them used re GOL elsewhere. First appear in the forums Oct. 3 in a post of mine.

I find no counterexamples. All "Athenian" circutry on the older sense either is or can be "Athenian" by my definition (as it bends to fit whatever's necessary).

I like to invent my own terminology. Is nice to see other people invents their own terminology too. I like Hippogriph, and athenian sounds epic.

No-one's posted in a fair bit, bump:

Charge: The density of an elementary spaceship as compared to 50% density. A spaceship's "density will be determined by it's average population divided by its average number of cells withing it's moore neighborhood. If an elementary spaceship has a density of higher than 50%, then it will be considered positively charged, or a proton. If a spaceship has a density of less than 50%, it will be considered negative or an electron. If a spaceship's charge is exactly 50% it will be condidered a neutron.

WIMS: (weakly interacting massive spaceship, sort of like weakly interacting massive particle dark matter theory). A weakly interacting massive spaceship is an engineered spaceship that is of a high enough period that any and all of it's spaceship streams should be possible for a glider or XWSS to traverse without either being damaged or rephased.

Basically, an asymmetric spaceship with a modulus half it's period in which during at least one of its phases it does not intersect it's own line of glide symmetry?

Looking at some oscillator collections, it may be worth adding a pre-block as well as a 7-cell century predecessor to that list:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
3bobo4b2o$b2o2bo4bo2bobo$3b2o2bo4bo2bobo$2o15bo$6b2o3b2o4bo$bo12b2o$3b

EDIT: I ended up looking at some of the higher-order p2s on pentadecathlon.com and there's these four components as well that arise in higher population oscillators, so these might also qualify.

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

And some messing about earlier got me a (entirely too big) p2 with v sparks inside of it, meaning those might also be able to be listed.

To bring back up the debate on "zig-zag spaceship": A zig-zag spaceship must cross its line of glide symmetry entirely over its mod.
Basically, an asymmetric spaceship with a modulus half it's period in which during at least one of its phases it does not intersect it's own line of glide symmetry?
Not exactly. Your definition would include glide-symmetric spaceships with a gutter, for example:

Code: Select all

x = 111, y = 25, rule = LifeHistory

Regarding "sparkling springs": A much simpler definition would be: a period-2 oscillator where no cell dies of overpopulation.

Bounding box would fit, and remove the additional problem of higher period spaceships/engineless rakes, until you consider diagonally traveling spaceships. We can say "must not contain" but then that gets hard to define.

I don’t really understand what you are talking about, basically the how ship need to cross the line, so no cells on the line or on the other side of the line.
Also you might want to check out bounding diamonds

We already have (in alphabetical order) the FWSS, HWSS, LWSS, MWSS, OWSS, UWSS, and XWSS. Here's an addition to the family, the RWSS:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
bo$o2bo$3o!
This would be the BWSS(it becomes a B-heptaplet and nothing else)

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
2bo$3bo$3bo$4o!

Code: Select all

x = 192, y = 53, rule = B3/S23

'Soul' for a pattern that forces its own existence in the previous generation. The logic being that they can't be constructed by mortals but only created by a god.

"Cloud" A spaceship that cannot be broken down into smaller components, and goes through severe shape and size changes. like this:

Code: Select all

Strong replicator: A replicator which acts as a unit cell, such that individual replicator units can be removed at the correct points in its evolution such that its replication habit remains unaffected.

Weak replicator: A replicator which, while replicating infinitely from a single unit, does not act as a unit cell; removing individual units causes anything from a change in its replication habit (usually to something chaotic) to outright degradation of the replicators themselves.
