Is "Growing/shrinking spaceship" (wiki article) a thing? If so, what is an example? Or is it an aspirational concept?
It's possible to create a spaceship whose front end is a wick stretcher that extrudes a wick. The rear is another spaceship of the same velocity that eventually hits the rear end of the expanding wick, but instead of being destroyed by it, ignites the wick so it burns cleanly at a higher speed than that of the spaceships, until it reaches the front spaceship, at which a new wick is extruded, ad infinitum. The population is a sawtooth that oscillates between that of the two spaceships alone, and that of the two spaceships with a fully extruded wick.

There are similar stationary high period oscillators that work on the same principle: e.g. a glider gun fires gliders into a distant mechanism, creating a crystal, and subsequent gliders hitting the crystal slowly grow the crystal towards the gun. Mechanisms near the gun ignite the crystal into a fuse that burns away, once it reaches the gun.

Examples of both of these have actually been constructed.

How is the apgcode for a linear-growth derived from the pop plot? Is it just some random string or is there an algorithm?
B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

I don't have any personally, but I've seen some posted on several of the forum threads from time to time. You might look at the Spaceship Discussion Thread.

They aren't too hard to construct. For example:

Thanks for coming to the rescue. I had the concept well enough but I’m no pattern engineer. This is terrific.

Hi all :3

Dabbled in GOL for years, and love it. Dont know much about the math involved or the scripts, but i like to draw random or symmetrical designs and press play. Wanted to eventually create something that kept growing, and i finally made this.

If anyone can describe to me the type of life this is, maybe it belongs in a certain category, thx a bunch :3

Welcome to the forums! Based on your screenshot, it appears that you are using Golly. The best way to share your patterns on the forums is to put the RLE for the pattern inside code tags. To get the RLE from Golly, simply select the pattern with the selection tool and press ctrl+C to copy (or cmd+C on Mac). You can then paste the RLE text directly into your forum post. In your case, you would write the following:
x = 30, y = 30, rule = B3/S23
25b2o$24b3o$23bob2o$3obo17bo$3obo16bo3b2o$bo8b2o8bo$2bo3b3ob2o9bobo$3b
o6bo12bo$4bobobobo10bobo$5bo$21b4o$23b2o7$5b2o$5b4o$24bo$6bobo10bobobo
bo$6bo12bo6bo$6bobo9b2ob3o3bo$9bo8b2o8bo$3b2o3bo16bob3o$7bo17bob3o$3b
2obo$3b3o$3b2o!
which gives this code box:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 30, rule = B3/S23
25b2o$24b3o$23bob2o$3obo17bo$3obo16bo3b2o$bo8b2o8bo$2bo3b3ob2o9bobo$3b
o6bo12bo$4bobobobo10bobo$5bo$21b4o$23b2o7$5b2o$5b4o$24bo$6bobo10bobobo
bo$6bo12bo6bo$6bobo9b2ob3o3bo$9bo8b2o8bo$3b2o3bo16bob3o$7bo17bob3o$3b
2obo$3b3o$3b2o!
You can now click on "show in viewer" at the top of the code box to open the LifeViewer and run the pattern directly in your browser.

The infinite growth pattern that you found is called a glider-producing switch engine. It's pretty rare to find one by hand. Very cool!

If you do start to get interested in using scripts, you might consider contributing to Catagolue. Take a look at the tutorial to see how.

Again, welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy your stay.

P.S.: I moved your post to the basic questions thread.

You want to surround the RLE with code tags. So like this:
Paste RLE here.

How can i search specifically for spaceships?

What are the easiest software to search for spaceships? Is there a tutorial for that?

Also, i would like to know which rules are intensively searched and which ones are less searched. I could search on a non-totalistic rule that is less searched.

Thanks, but these are all "growers" and are not lineships. What I am looking for is what the wiki article "growing/shrinking lineship" refers to, a lineship that oscillates, like the example in the "growing/shrinking spaceship" wiki article but, again, a lineship. I've been asking around, and no one seems to have an example. I am wondering if this is an aspirational concept.

If I remember correctly, the term "lineship/linepuffer" was reserved for extensible spaceships/puffers that contain an arbitrary long single line of on cells perpendicular to their direction of movement in at least one phase. Examples are in jslife for speeds c/2 and c/3.

In a distant past, c/2 linepuffers seemed quite exciting, as they were one of the few sources for new puffer engines.

Just a small reminder: the demonstration on LifeWiki is not properly attributed — instead of referring to that post, refer to Golly pattern collection instead (as what is done for line ship) and mention this (taken from comments):

Code: Select all

#C Adjustable-period growing/shrinking Corder-based c/12 lineship
#C Nicolay Beluchenko, 17 July 2005; optimization by David Bell.
#C This example is period 6144, with a minimum population of 4620.
#C Moving the back Cordership forwards or backwards by multiples of
#C 88 cells adjusts the period by multiples of 1152 generations.
---

My own questions, including un-answered ones:
 1. Is Max synthesizable?
 2. Is there a official non-Google site that provides up-to-date Golly on Android, for accessibility in China?
 3. What's the asymptotic growth rate of infinite distinct Corderships gun that is driven by sqrtgun? What if it is driven by caber tosser?
 4. Is the following device completable nowadays, and can it be used for other Corderships?

2.I am not sure, but maybe.
3.When looking at special growth rate patterns, we have to remember that the population is not the amount of signals outputted. one would have to find the amount of increase in time between each fire using the summation function and other random stuff that gets super deep into calculus and reverse riemann summation.
4.There would have to be some still life catalyst that could convert the loaf back to the beehive, using some kind of modified catalyst with enough space to avoid the cordership.

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 28, rule = TripleLife
17.G$17.3G$20.G$19.2G11$9.EF$8.FG.GD$8.DGAGF$10.DGD5$2.2G$3.G30.2G$3G
25.2G5.G$G27.G.G.3G$21.2G7.G.G$21.2G7.2G!

I will try to find out the exact growth rate.

So like the corderlineship in golly:
Yes. That's it. Thank you.

#C Moving the back Cordership forwards or backwards by multiples of
#C 88 cells adjusts the period by multiples of 1152 generations.
corrections made; thanks

What is the smallest pattern with no polyomino parent?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3
3bo$4bo$o2bo$2o2$2o$o2bo$4bo$3bo!

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S2-i3-y4i
4b3o$6bo$o3b3o$2o$bo!

I suspect that the answer to this would be "the smallest Garden of Eden pattern". Most other patterns are probably glider-constructible, and it ought to be possible to create a highly artificial polyomino framework that consists of some lumps that turn into gliders, attached to scaffolding that quickly dies out, in much the same way that plastic models are formed from one single piece of molded plastic consisting of a discardable scaffold attached to all the relevant parts.
