Is "Growing/shrinking spaceship" (wiki article) a thing? If so, what is an example? Or is it an aspirational concept?

It's possible to create a spaceship whose front end is a wick stretcher that extrudes a wick. The rear is another spaceship of the same velocity that eventually hits the rear end of the expanding wick, but instead of being destroyed by it, ignites the wick so it burns cleanly at a higher speed than that of the spaceships, until it reaches the front spaceship, at which a new wick is extruded, ad infinitum. The population is a sawtooth that oscillates between that of the two spaceships alone, and that of the two spaceships with a fully extruded wick.

There are similar stationary high period oscillators that work on the same principle: e.g. a glider gun fires gliders into a distant mechanism, creating a crystal, and subsequent gliders hitting the crystal slowly grow the crystal towards the gun. Welcome to the forums! Based on your screenshot, it appears that you are using Golly. The best way to share your patterns on the forums is to put the RLE for the pattern inside code tags. To get the RLE from Golly, simply select the pattern with the selection tool and press ctrl+C to copy (or cmd+C on Mac). You can then paste the RLE text directly into your forum post. The infinite growth pattern that you found is called a glider-producing switch engine. It's pretty rare to find one by hand. Very cool!

What I am looking for is what the wiki article "growing/shrinking lineship" refers to, a lineship that oscillates, like the example in the "growing/shrinking spaceship" wiki article but, again, a lineship. If I remember correctly, the term "lineship/linepuffer" was reserved for extensible spaceships/puffers that contain an arbitrary long single line of on cells perpendicular to their direction of movement in at least one phase. Examples are in jslife for speeds c/2 and c/3.

In a distant past, c/2 linepuffers seemed quite exciting, as they were one of the few sources for new puffer engines.

I suspect that the answer to this would be "the smallest Garden of Eden pattern". Most other patterns are probably glider-constructible, and it ought to be possible to create a highly artificial polyomino framework that consists of some lumps that turn into gliders, attached to scaffolding that quickly dies out, in much the same way that plastic models are formed from one single piece of molded plastic consisting of a discardable scaffold attached to all the relevant parts.
