Herschel or r? If by "common" you mean forms the most not necessarily from a three glider collision
I meant that forms from the most three-glider collisions.
idk but herschel forms from a lot of them (make a b for 2g, then delete the block)

Yes, but should slightly different timings count?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Nah.

Nah.
So then what object that has no two-glider synthesis is formed by the most three-glider collisions where the third glider would not have led to the same result in the same way by arriving one or two generations earlier?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Almost certainly the R, or if you wanted to be annoying the pre-block (all 2G collisions which produce it have dying sparks at that stage) or the 4 cell Z-tetromino beehive predecessor (the 2G also produces a spark at that stage)
Oscillator discussion is boring me out. I'll return when the cgol community switches to something else.

are there any asymmetric objects that appear more common in some symmetry

xp4_37bkiczy1359a4 is one of them
Achim's p8 (xp8_25du4szx327ba4) is also much more common in D2_x, though there's slightly more soups in C1 and many more soups in G1 as they have been searched a lot more.

Almost certainly the R
That was my best guess, but other common sequences, like wing and century, would also be plausible.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Are there any metacells or any other method of emulating Margolus rules in CGoL?

0E0Ps or OTCAs running 2x2.

Ok, well I know that. I even just accidentally made a B1 rule that can emulate a Margolus rule (B12347/S123458). Let me rephrase my question then: Are there any metacells or any other method of emulating any arbitrary Margolus rules in CGoL?

I think the 0E0Ps can simulate arbitrary Margolus rules.

What is the smallest-period oscillator for which every cell in the rotor changes state at least four times per period? Six times? What about the highest-period oscillator for which every cell in the rotor changes state exactly two times per period?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3
3bo$4bo$o2bo$2o2$2o$o2bo$4bo$3bo!

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S2-i3-y4i
4b3o$6bo$o3b3o$2o$bo!

For any N, there's a p43N+1 oscillator where every cell in the rotor changes state at least 2N times per period — but for specific values of N I'm not sure about improvements to that upper bound...

Is there an existing catalogue of eater welds? Or should I make one?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3
3bo$4bo$o2bo$2o2$2o$o2bo$4bo$3bo!

What do you mean by "eater welds"?
Does that include oscillators like "eater plug"?

No. Sometimes we need eaters close to each other in conduits, so new still lives with two eater heads are needed.

It does include oscillators, but ones like test tube baby, with two heads.

Would this dot sparker count as medium or strong?

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 5, rule = Symbiosis
B5.AB$.A$.B3A$3.A$5.BA!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Medium, as the sparker is still changed (advanced by one generation) if the spark is removed even if it technically isn't destroyed.

How can I search custom rules in apgsearch?
B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

./apgluxe --rule (Your rule)

Then run ./apgluxe again
