MathAndCode has been doing quite a bit of work in a dedicated thread for this kind of thing also.

If "xp0_4q96" were written in RLE instead of apgcode form, it would be easier to go see if it's in one of these places. Why use nonstandard apgcodes? Or at least, why use them without linking to Catagolue like this so it's easy to see what they are?

The very rough measure I've been using for commonness of evolutionary sequences is the number of hits in the octohash database. This loaf-plus-a-bit 2bo$bobo$o2bo$b2o$bo! object is moderately common, since it shows up twenty times in octohash results:

Well, unfortunately, the junk surrounding that dot spark does not back off quickly enough. To be more specific, I was trying to turn a particular block great-grandparent to a glider, and so diagonal clearance is imporant as well as orthogonal clearance. Generation 93 of that conduit gives another dot that later liberates the glider successfully, but the active region will hit the source of said block predecessor earlier.

Maybe post the "source of said block predecessor", then? Otherwise I have to make one up for testing purposes, but really I have no idea if I've got one that's compatible with your intended use.

An unsuppressed Fx119 has a very good dot spark hiding in it -- maybe this will be good enough until something better comes along:

There are quite a few good sparkers among standard conduits, but I don't think they've ever been organized into a stamp collection for that purpose. For example, a beehive stopper has a substantial spark -- don't know what it's called, it's a "beehive-with-one-cell-missing-but-not-a-phi-spark" spark -- and there's a domino spark in NE25T239 (the kind that shows up one cell at a time, though) on one side, and a pipsquirter spark on the other side... and so on. Were there maybe some Bandersnatch variants made that had good side sparks?

A new thread for collecting such things would be welcome. There are a lot of Herschel-to-nothing converters out there, so once there's a thread to keep them in, some really good sparky ones should eventually gather there.

When I search up c/10 in the forums, it ignores the c and the /, so I get all results with 10 in it. How could I make sure c and / are included?

When I search up c/10 in the forums, it ignores the c and the /, so I get all results with 10 in it. How could I make sure c and / are included?
I'd suggest using something other than phpBB itself - here's an example query for Google: "c 10" site:conwaylife.com/forums. Other search engines probably have their own version of this, if you prefer. Note that I replaced the slash with a space, because even Google doesn't like searching for punctuation, but it's still much more versatile than phpBB's search engine.

It's p196, but such a spark would have to be p49, p98, or p196. (28 doesn't work.) The p196 pi hassler would be unlikely to work because it's not really a sparker, and it's also a diagonal pattern. A p196 (not 49 or 98) block factory will work, but I don't know if any exist.

The simplest way to get this to work is to reflect the emitted gliders, but that makes it only an oscillator, not a gun.

That's a tricky period, because even if the color happens to be right for connecting an output to either input with just Snarks -- which it isn't -- 196 is a multiple of 4, so there are three chances out of four that no amount of fiddling around with trombone-slide adjustments will get a glider back to the right spacetime location.

-- Nope, no such luck, they're all odd numbers. Waiting one or more extra cycles works great for odd-period oscillations like this p83, but it won't help in this case. Adding more Bandersnatchi won't help either, because they have to be added in pairs, and that will always result in a timing change that's an even number of ticks.

So your question can't be answered as it stands, even if Bandersnatchi are allowed. We're going to have to add something else, or go back to the old trick of starting with multiple copies of the reaction feeding gliders to each other. You could add a syringe+H2G from simeks' old collection, or if that seems like overkill, just allow rectifiers.

That's just if you stick to stable stuff, though! As soon as you allow bouncers and bumpers, you can get the timing adjusted to whatever is needed, by starting with one p7 bouncer and two Snarks, and swapping out Snarks for bumpers one at a time until the right timing shows up -- don't even need to allow Bandersnatchi. 196 allows for p4 bumpers, so use those, they're by far the easiest to work with because you can move them without rephasing them.

B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

I assume you're running the one-spark program, as the two-spark program warns you but gives you the option to keep running.

If you want to do them one by one:

Wherever 11 appears, change it to the current x. Wherever 23 appears, change it to the current y, or y + 1 if you are getting a whole bunch of the same thing.

If you want to run everything to completion, in the last block of code, remove the exit command (and the warn command if you don't want to keep getting notified; it pauses until you click), and you'll need to save it to some file. Be warned that you will get some duplicates if you do this. You can remove the if statement, but keep the generation_snapshots line in case there are any actually useful duplicates (e.g. if a spark works in multiple places but a sparker only fits in one of them).

Of note: if you're running a rule other than Life, and these two spark locations are not equivalent, you're going to miss a few. This program doesn't bother to check the domino because it assumes they're identical.

Billiard Table Construction questions

How to make effective attempts on finding billiard tables? Are there ways to do searches on the interior part for specific stators?
It can be seen that the White Whale in LongLife (B345/S5) may never collapse since the edge is guaranteed to be reborn every 2 ticks, and we may check the period for arbitrary setups. But for standard Life, is it that we may only build a rotor first?

The more birth transitions compared to survival transitions, the more volatile things are. Life is also somewhat unusual in that most random soups have no oscillators above period 2; most rules similar to Life have at least one p3+ that occurs commonly (as in honeyfarm-level common).

My take would be that they are "historically significant methuselahs" from the floor-tile / graph paper days of 1969-1970something.

Many of the methuselahs on the list of "long-lived" methuselahs aren't "notable" today, in the sense that they're not record-breaking -- but they were notable at one point, so they get to stay there on the list and rub shoulders with the latest and greatest.

I actually argued againt Octomino II (116 generations, not sure how many cells its smallest predecessor is) being listed as a methuselah when its article was created on the wiki, but it became one anyway. See teardrop and butterfly for what a common sequence that's not a methuselah looks like.

Also, pi has a 5-cell predecessor — no larger than R.

LifeWiki says that RNE-19T84 is not Spartan, which I think is due to the eater2 variant to minimize bounding box. Do we really need it elsewhere, apart from an L156-based edge-shooter where it also catalyzes the HLx69R stage? Can't we just use a simple block as can be seen in this post?
