What should a component that turns a hat into xs16_c8al96z311 be called? Add against loaf? Add hang loaf?
I have historically worked on conduits, but recently, I've been working on glider syntheses and investigating SnakeLife.

A cutout synthesis is one where all the cells of the object that one wants to synthesize are already there, and one is simply removing all surrounding cells. Example cutout synthesis for a glider:
