You seem to be already a moderator.
Why did you quote me in Famous Quotes?
What is that thread used for?

Whenever a rule definition is needed for LifeViewer to be able to display and animate patterns on the forums or the LifeWiki, it's okay to create a Rule:{rulename} article in the Rules namespace.

If you make thousands of them very quickly and never use any of them, that would be a problem, but it's hard to see why anyone would do that.

Below the text area when you're composing a message, there's an area with two tabs, "Options" and "Attachments". A lot of people miss seeing the "Attachments" tab. Click there, then click the "Add files" button.

You can add images to the wiki, but other file types generally have to be hosted elsewhere and linked to in a LifeWiki article. For example, you could attach valid file types to a forum message, then link to that message or directly to the file.

Arbitrary file types can't be added to the wiki as any kind of attachment. For pattern files, there's a whole separate upload system that's available only to moderators, just to keep things simple and avoid worries about spam or malicious attacks. If a pattern needs to be added to the LifeWiki patterns collection, a request can be posted somewhere like the Suggested LifeWiki edits thread.

Provide more details, please! What contents are you putting in your two layers of references, and why is it necessary? Also please don't duplicate the question to other threads especially if they are really old.

Such a reference can be found in pentadecathlon, but the note that I'm using has a name.
EDIT: They asked me to cite this post.

I noticed that the wiki template LV:Viewer doesn't work properly with script blockers like ublock or NoScript. When JavaScript is disabled, the template is supposed to replace the viewer with an error message that tells the user to enable JavaScript. This works if I disable JavaScript directly with the browser (Chrome or Firefox) debugging tools, but script blockers just give a large blank area where the message should be.

My best guess for why this occurs is that the script blockers still allow the canvas element to be rendered, but then they don't allow it to be drawn on (the error message is between the canvas tags and doesn't get drawn), whereas disabling scripts directly in the browser will cause the canvas tags to be ignored entirely (this is speculative, I don't know if that's how these things work). In that case, maybe the canvas element could be generated dynamically using JavaScript, and the error message could be moved outside the canvas, so that when a script blocker is active the canvas won't be created and the error message will remain.

Does anyone actually understand why this happens or have a solution? I think it's a low-priority issue, since the vast majority of users will have JavaScript enabled, but I thought it would be nice if it could work properly for people who use script blockers. In particular, I want the Lifeline articles to have LifeViewer thumbnails that are replaced with static images when scripts are being blocked.

There a re a lot of pages listed on the wiki "pending deletion" page (https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Categor ... g_deletion). Most seem to have long passed the "let's get these resolved in 14 days" policy. Can we get a process in place to resolve the backlog and keep it from building up?

Category:Pending deletion includes pages that had been marked for deletion and are now redirected. Can these be removed from that list? They include:

45 hivenudgers
Angry egg
Dave
Death
Double Wing
Eater 1 with blinker
Eater 1 with glider
Eater 1 with loaf
Eater 1 with pre-beehive
Jolson (period 9)
Tiretrak

Sure -- and I think you can be deputized to do it without any problems. Looking at the "45 hivenudgers" example, the #REDIRECT article consists of the following:

Code: Select all

#REDIRECT [[Hivenudger]]
[[Category:Patterns]]
[[Category:Patterns_with_between_1,000 and 9,999_cells]]
[[Category:Spaceships]]
[[Category:Spaceships_with_heat_between 1,000 and 9,999]]
[[Category:Spaceships_with_period_4]]
{{delete|unused elsewhere and unlikely to be linked
'''It has been suggested that this page should be added to categories'''}}
The "marked for deletion" part of this is the last item in double curly braces,

{{delete|unused elsewhere and unlikely to be linked
'''It has been suggested that this page should be added to categories'''}}

If this template inclusion is removed from the article, then it won't be shown in the "Pending deletion" category any more.

I tried this for the "Dave" category, which wasn't complicated by any other content, and it's no longer in the pending-deletion list.

For the above, I have no idea what those "Patterns" and "Spaceships" categories are doing in the "45 hivenudgers" article -- seems like those could just be taken out also, whenever someone does the editing.

It doesn't take an admin to do these edits, as long as there's a good and generally agreed-on reason to fix things (which I think there is in this case).

It was I who proposed a lot of deletions long time ago, including several redirects because I thought they are useless with long names. (why on earth would anyone input "45 hivenudgers" in the search box or make a link to it when the simple "hivenudger" would do?! The four "eater 1 with xxx" 's are similar) But the proposals got ignored and the pages were preserved for too long.

Up to that it's still fine, I thought. But this year one or more person(s) began to edit LifeWiki outside his/their user page under the username of ColorfulGalaxy. CG made a few move beyond traditional LifeWiki standards that required some patch up, including adding a lot of categories to redirects even to those I had proposed deletion previously, which made me frustrated. Some quotes on the issue: (Sorry for the mess, but stupid phpBB does not allow nested quotes above three layers!)

Also redirect pages should be added to categories
I hold some objections for this matter, particularly after CG made too many edits of this type which cluttered up in the Recent Changes. Can anyone clarify why exactly it is a good idea to do so?
The wiki article on "Help redirect" says that redirects can't include anything else except categories, if I remember correctly. Goldenratio once removed the categories from my edits to the tetradecathlon page, but then undid it saying "never mind".
The category "patterns that can not be constructed with gliders" has too few pages because the garden of eden pages became redirect pages.
The Category:UserImages also contains too few pages.
By the way, many of my posts on my previous account went missing.

Sorry for such a long "Trumpish" post like this

The idea of this appears to be to allow easier navigation to, for example, oscillators that are notable enough to be mentioned on the wiki and may have unique properties compared to the other patterns they're based on. My own feelings are somewhat mixed about it, but I decided to go along with it just to make sure things are at least cleaned up. I also have a list of categorized redirects in my userspace, so we can keep track of them in case we come to a consensus to decategorize them.
I feel like I'm actually the one who made it standard. I only did so after you suggested it with the pre-pulsar and two pond and two block hasslers.
These discrepancies on LifeWiki editing are exactly the reason why you're seeing all those weirdness. Maybe this is a good chance to make it clear: I want the pages marked pending deletion to be deleted asap, strongly. And I dislike seeing a lot of redirect page on category pages, but only weakly (so if many others still hold strong supports to the idea, or at least agrees to treat different kinds of categories separately, I may withdraw my viewpoint).

So I see! Let me clarify what I meant, since the meaning changed quite a bit in light of GUYTU6J's follow-up comments above.

It's perfectly possible for non-admins to remove delete tags such as those, when they're causing problems and their presence is no longer appropriate.

However, especially given GUYTU6J's response, I'd say that it probably is a good idea to delete most or all of those redirects. There's no point in having a redirect cluttering things up, unless there's a non-zero probability that someone will type in the redirect's name and want to be directed to the page that the redirect points to. So in these cases, it probably doesn't make too much sense to remove the deletion tag.

I think that GUYTU6J's judgment is generally good on these -- long never-used names pointing to short commonly-used names are just clutter. I'll go ahead and review these individually, and will delete whatever redirects still seem to be unnecessary. (So, no need to restore the deletion tags, just be patient and the redirects will probably disappear.)

Anyone with concerns about this, please post them here if possible! It's pretty time-consuming to dig through all the relevant talk pages on the LifeWiki, and it's easy for me to miss things when I'm trying to do this kind of bulk clean-up job.

Regarding Gocow, I would like to merge it, along with 51P20H10V0, into the HWSS page, as examples of 2 HWSSes escorting an unstable object. I'd be glad to do that.

And here is another comment on the 51P20H10V0 talk page: "I'd say this page should probably be kept. There's definitely something fundamental about this one that grants it weight - it's one of only four 10c/20 ships in jslife's 10c/20 collection after all and I'm not sure of the existence of many others outside of that. Also, at 51 cells, it's quite a bit smaller than many other Life spaceships, even if not the smallest. - AwesoMan3000 (talk) 19:03, 19 November 2020 (UTC)"

Some redirects are there so that they can be seen in the categories, specifically high-period oscillators without their own pages.

I'm wondering, why has the template LV:Viewer been put in a special namespace instead of the generic one for other templates? I understand that it is kept from editing by non-admin users, but the same protection level can just be set for a Template page as well.
