I can't download Golly

Post by ColorfulGalaxy » July 20th, 2020, 9:14 am

If you look at my posts, you may see some weird things such as "x=0, y=0".
That's because I can't download Golly.
I need to use Golly to encode patterns, or I have to type the code by hand.
Is GoIIy banned in China?
Please help.

I hadn't heard that Golly itself has ever been banned in China. It's just a ZIP file containing an executable, after all, not a website.

SourceForge, the normal download location for Golly, is rumored to have been banned on at least three occasions, but the last report I can find is from years ago.

Are you looking for 32-bit Golly 3.3, or 64-bit? It's easy enough to put a copy somewhere else for you to download, but please be very specific about what version would be useful to you, and also any likely locations that you think might work for you. Google Drive and DropBox are both banned, I think? But you can probably get to my files directory on cranemtn.com, right?

Another option you might try is to create patterns directly in LifeViewer. You can select, copy and paste standard RLE out of LifeViewer, once you know how. The strangest detail is having to click the "Sync" button before you hit Ctrl+C,, but only if you have made a selection with the mouse. But certainly if you can get a version of Golly working, that will be better.

(Yet another Chinese newcomer!你好!)
The golly page on sourceforge.net is available for me currently. Maybe the local internet connection to overseas website is worse at night than that at day, and you may try to access sourceforge.net now. As for the software itself, it clearly is not banned.
Also, there is something called VPN.

I was told to use VPN, and it costs money.

Google Drive and DropBox is both banned, but SourceForge is clearly not banned and stable.

Well, I had trouble downloading Golly, but use LifeViewer more. I still have issues with opening Golly and my computer has issues opening the .mc file format.

Another thing is that please stop starting new threads unesscarily. There are threads for basic questions.
Not inactive any more! :D

While I agree with most part of your post, thread for basic question is intended for discussion directly related to CGoL, and not softwares.

Most browsers support downloading webpages, try that.

It's compiled from the same codebase, maybe, but for the purposes of the question, the online version is Javascript and Golly is a compiled executable -- not the same thing by any stretch.

I tried simply right-click / Save As on the webapp page. For LifeViewer that will download everything needed to build a functional local package, but it looks like a bit more fiddling around is needed for the Golly webapp. I tried getting rid of the ".download" suffix in the HTML and the hidden "Golly_files" folder, but that wasn't enough to make the local copy functional. I'm still seeing stuff in the Developer Console like

Code: Select all

Access to XMLHttpRequest at 'file:///C:/Users/greedd/Desktop/golly.data' from origin 'null' has been blocked by CORS policy: Cross origin requests are only supported for protocol schemes: http, data, chrome, chrome-extension, chrome-untrusted, https.
... which I know is probably solvable with enough research, but I'm not highly motivated at the moment to learn everything I'd need to know to sort this out.

A bunch of bitmaps don't get included in the download, either. Probably best to start from the golly-code Git repository -- looks like the bitmaps are all in a subfolder of the gui-web folder. Does anyone know offhand all the steps needed to get this working locally?
