What user rights group is required to be able to move pages without leaving a redirect?

The group that gives me that checkbox option is "administrator". Maybe "interface administrator" or "bureaucrat" would do the same, I'm not sure -- haven't investigated exactly what those groups are good for.

Eater 4 needs more example usage. I guess it's not limited to these pre-pulsar and honey farm hasslers

Certainly seems a tad excessive. On all the other wikis I remember having moved pages on, the option to not leave a redirect was always there for registered confirmed users. Could it be changed on the LifeWiki to trusted users? I doubt there'd be much abuse of it, especially seeing the community here isn't as big.

I'm thinking of putting all the test tube baby variants on the page for "test tube baby", under a "Variants" section. The former variant pages will have a redirect to "Test tube baby#Variants". Also, what is the etymology? I get the "test tube" part, but I'm not sure about "baby".

"Baby" just because it's an unusually small test tube variant, apparently, and because "test tube baby" was a (more common?) phrase back in the day, when in vitro fertilization was a newer thing. I think the first human baby was born using in vitro fertilization in 1978, just a few years before the Life pattern was named. An old email by Alan Hensel has some details:
In 1994, Alan Hensel wrote:I found this pattern independently sometime around 1986. Since the
stretched versions look like test tubes, I called those Life in a test
tube, and the tiny version above was "test tube baby". It was so dubbed
in the pattern collection that was the precursor to the Xlife collection

That makes it clear. This whole time I was interpreting the "baby" part as an exclamation, something like, "Test tube, baby!" Like they were super excited about the discovery. Makes a lot more sense now.

Anyway, thoughts on merging all the test tube baby variants articles into the test tube baby article?

I'm pretty sure every single page title here can have protection removed:

https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Special:ProtectedTitles

Given that for most of them it's been a decade since they were ever a problem, and that the likelihood they would be created again today is basically zero, there's probably no risk in cleaning this page up.

In the p44 pi-heptomino hassler page, there is a red link to "p50 pi-heptomino hassler" that has been there since the creation of the page. I can't find it on the forums. What is it?
Btw can someone get access to pentadecathlon.com now? It was working when I edited the 2-glider collision page a week ago, but now I get

Code: Select all

(111) Connection refused
The remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again.

Seems like it must be the old engine from the p50 glider gun. I think the latest incarnation is this:

I've seen a lot of deletion proposals to Life Wiki articles by GUYTU6J.

My proposal would be to not blindly follow them. E.g. the 3c/10 pi reaction ist not only used in some growing spaceship pattern, but it is also one of the longest outstanding engineering tasks to create a spaceship from that reaction. While these efforts weren't successfulso far, they still have inspired other projects.

It's good to have guiding principles for notability, but it's not good to follow them purely formal. The same goes for netiquette in general, by the way.

I'm not proposing deleting the article 3c/10 pi wave itself; the point is to delete the low-quality and redundant image file. (EDIT: Now I know why there's confusion - the semi-automated edit reason said "proposed deletion because not notable&not used elsewhere". My bad)
(Am I ma to dive into the pages and find those?)

ah! Good to know! Of course this was not meant personally in any way! Most of your proposals I would underwrite immediately. However other people might have a different opinion. Even if it was copied from LifeLexicon, there was a reason why it was there originally, which might still be valid or maybe no longer.

I just wanted to point out that

a) deletions should not be implemented too quickly
b) rules should not be applied blindly
c) not every wiki reader is an active wiki editor, but may have a strong opinion nevertheless

I very much have that in my professional life anyway...

May 6: Goldtiger997 solves the problem of glider-constructing all pseudo still lifes consisting of...
However the link "pseudo" goes to the page for pseudo-period guns.
Suggestion: redirect "object" to pattern and write about the concept of object, true object and pseudo object there, then give "true" and "pseudo" disambiguation pages.

Can we adjust the LV:Viewer template so that its location in a page can be modified? For example,

Code: Select all

{{LV:Viewer|center|...}}
will make the viewer appear at the centre (default setting now is left).

EDIT one year later: the typical solution is

Code: Select all

<center>{{LV:Viewer|...}}</center>

Help! I made myself troubles.
I noticed that in the File:Nivasch caterpillar.gif by User:AwesoMan3000, the tail of caterpillar is missing. Gabriel's original website displays two gifs together, namely cat_picture01.gif and cat_picture02.gif, but the previous version contains cat_picture01.gif only. So I downloaded two gifs, combined them manually with MSpaint, and uploaded to Lifewiki. Then both the page for File:Nivasch_caterpillar.gif and the article for caterpillar threw a bunch of errors at the top of the page. It went something like:

Help! I made myself troubles.
I didn't get as far as really understanding the problem. One crackpot theory is that the MediaWiki GIF-handling code doesn't like GIFs above a certain height, and so labels them as invalid. (?) Not sure if that's actually true, but GIFs generated by two different systems both caused the same error.

My workaround was to make a more standard black-and-white PNG file of your Caterpillar image, and display that instead. It's still not particularly nice to look at, but short of putting a DISPLAYONLY copy of the pattern into LifeViewer, I'm not sure what the best solution would be. Using LifeViewer doesn't seem like such a good idea, because people might copy out the reduced-scale pattern into Golly and expect it to be runnable...!

Code: Select all

#N 4-degree MWSS-to-G
#O Ivan Fomichev, 14 October 2015
#C http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/445-degree_MWSS-to-G
#C http://www.conwaylife.com/patterns/45degreemwsstog.rle
x = 28, y = 26, rule = B3/S23

21b2o$13b2o$12bobo$12bo$11b2o$24b2o$24bo$25b3o$27bo!
Why using boat, not tub?(this is the viewer in wiki)
Maybe because slmake can only construct the boat on bookend siamese bookend variant shown in the infobox and not the tub on bookend siamese bookend, I don't know

Also I don't remember anything called "4-degree MWSS-to-G" or "445-degree MWSS-to-G"
EDIT: and the cell missing from the eater 2
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring

No idea how that happened, but I've patched it up. (Took me a couple of tries -- the .cells file was wrong too.)

I don't see the point. Unix on snacker is a perfectly valid p18.

The concept of non-trivial (your "valid") and boring are different.

Yeah, but the problem is "and thus not counted". If Unix on snacker is known by 1976, how is 117P18 "the first period 18 oscillator to be found"?
