Which platform and browser are you using?
Google Chrome 83.0.4103.116 64-bit.
On Windows?

The viewer runs twice as slow for the first pattern launched after loading a page.
Also this, which wasn't fixed since an eternity.
30fps 15% But it should be 60fps 20%.
I can't reproduce it. Do you see that behaviour in other browsers?
No.
I was so socially awkward in the past and it will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Code: Select all

No.
Then it's most likely a Chrome bug, not a LifeViewer issue.

Here's something interesting that came up on Discord this morning. I thought it was happening only on my computer, but others are seeing the same thing:

1) Go to a forum page. I'm using Windows 10, Google Chrome 83.0.4103.116; the problem doesn't happen on IE, Edge, or Firefox, or at least not reliably.
2) Select part of the RLE text in a code box. Works fine.
3) Click "Show in Viewer".
4) Click the X to close the pop-up window.
5) Select part of the RLE text in a code box again. Click-and-drag no longer works. Select All still works. Click, then Shift+arrow keys also works.

Saka reports that even if you don't open the viewer, click-and-drag selection works at first but stops working after a while.

Not sure I like this most recent series of Chrome updates. Subtle and annoying things have also been breaking in some Microsoft cloud applications that I have to deal with daily.

Minor random suggestion: Identify's results should allow you to copy to clipboard a loop or trackloop command to follow the speed and direction of an identified ship, or period of an oscillator (alternatively it could be added to the top of the RLE within the post, since Randomize is already capable of replacing RLEs).

Some suggestions for neighbourhoods for HROT and rulespaces to be added:

Arbitary neighbourhoods maybe with something like the CoordCA format?
Done. Specify as a neighbourhood to an LtL/HROT rule using N@<hex digits>. The R2 FarCorners rule becomes:

Code: Select all

R2,C2,S2-3,B3,N@891891

Exciting new frontiers!

How about Tripod as a HROT neighbourhood type (called N3)? The extension being as follows:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 9, rule = B/S0123456H
22bo$13bo8bo$6bo6bo8bo$bo4bo6bo8bo$2o2b3o3b4o4b5o$2bo4bo6bo8bo$8bo6bo
8bo$16bo8bo$26bo!
Also the Asterisk neighbourhood I proposed earlier could be implemented as NA as to not conflict with the existing N*

Request: If a rule has an alias, could it not be displayed by default in the rule change dialog?

And a question: What if there was a rule, with 30 pages in its thread, with immense discussion taking progress, with Demonoid construction in process, with two minor variants that both have aliases in LV? Now what if that rule didn't have a LV alias? Sounds stupid, right?

Wait a second...

It does:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 1, rule=HighLife
o!
Click on Settings->Pattern->Change Rule and the dialog will have "HighLife" in it.

Can the hexagonal grid be changed so that the flat side points up and down, rather than a vertex? It's kinda weird to have the tripod neighbourhood not be symmetric through horizontal reflection like all the others are.

Can the hexagonal grid be changed so that the flat side points up and down, rather than a vertex? It's kinda weird to have the tripod neighbourhood not be symmetric through horizontal reflection like all the others are.
No.

Another suggestion: a way to convert a selected pattern into the CoordCA custom neighbourhood format, instead of having to manually convert it.

Done. Create a selection and then use Ctrl-B.

It doesnt seem to work right for this pattern

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 11, rule = bs0
5bo2$bo7bo5$o9bo3$3bo3bo!

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = R5,C2,S1,3,5,7,B1,3,5,7,N@[quote then paste the resulting string over this]
o!
(edit: it works now, that was odd...)

Also a suggestion: could appending H or T to the resulting string make it appear as a hex or triangular grid for a more clear presentation of neighbourhoods intended for these rules?

Also a button for the ctrl b function (as well as for advance and advance outside) in the selection menu would be welcome.

Yes to "H".
No to "T" since LtL/HROT doesn't support inverting neighbourhoods on a checkerboard.

Noted. It's on the backlog.

Hard refresh your browser to view.

Custom neighbourhood on hex grid:

Code: Select all

# Type or paste RLE data into this box and click on the View button.
x = 5, y = 5, rule = R1,C2,S3-4,B2,5-6,N@dbH
o2$bo$b2o$o3bo!

Since we got Tri6inner and Tri6outer added recently, can the following triangular neighbourhood (possibly "LA" for Triangular All) also be added?

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 5, rule = B/SL
$b7o$2b2ob2o$3b3o$4bo!
[[ VIEWONLY GRID ]]

Only if I decide to add Triangular neighbourhood support to the HROT/LtL algo. The current tile-based Triangular algo can't support it since it's effectively range 3.

This post seems to imply some kind of difference between spherical bounded grids in LifeViewer vs. Golly.

and this post confirms it. No changes needed here.

What??? An oscillator with no rotor cells???

Post by ColorfulGalaxy » July 22nd, 2020, 9:53 pm

Code: Select all

x = 0, y = 0, rule = WireWorld
.ACB$B3.A$C3.C$A3.B$.BCA.32A!   ------   Signal Gun & Eater
Click "Show in viewer", then the gear at the corner, then "Pattern", then "Identify".
Next, mouse over the "0 | 44 | 44".

This happens for basically all WireWorld patterns!!!
