The spark is mentioned under Eater 1 in the wiki, but the rest of the transformations may or may not be new. I have no idea if any of it is useful or not, though.

In the instances you mentioned, a single point-wise bit-spark (or equivalent point-wise domino spark) would have the same effect. I am not sure how expensive the above-mentioned spark is (probably 3-4 gliders), but a point-wise domino can be made with 2 (with lots of junk that reaches as far up, so it has limited usefulness), or 3 in several ways that are formed more cleanly:

Yes, but can one of those sparks do this?

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

I suppose I only used that spark because of old habit from before I realized that a smaller spark could do the trick as well.

In this particular case, two of the two-glider ones could do his, although the single spark would win if it could be formed from just 3 gliders. Do you know of a way to do that? It seems likely that there should be some 3-glider collision that would make such a spark, but i don't know of any off hand. i don't have sparks categorized by that particular result (e.g.a 2x5 block with the middle row shifted forward one). I have seen that come up before, but I'm not sure how.

I dunno, maybe a glider applied to the side of a B-heptomino could do the trick.

Pre-honey farm + block -> glider + beehive

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
2o$2o$5b3o$4bo3bo$3bo5bo$4bo3bo$5b3o!
Pi-heptomino pushes a beehive by 1 block.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
b2o3b3o$o2bo2bo$b2o3b3o!
Im not sure whether these patterns were already found.

Building on my previous posts, this still life is destroyed (sadly not cleanly) if the two sparks are applied at the same time, but not if they are mistimed by even one generation.

Code: Select all

This is a dirty fuse for the p8 beehive puffer. I think this hasn't caught much attention, maybe because 1) it's dirty, and 2) it does not seem to have much use.

But, this fuse can be ignited very easily, and putting two or more trails near each other enables the reburning reaction to occur spontaneously. Unfortunately, most of the fuses die out eventually(especially when there aren't many trails). But some do successfully become reburners. Here is a dirty reburner with two trails.(It takes some time to stabilize.)

rpentomino + blinker -> rpentomino + blinker in a different orientation (18 gens)
Can this be made into some sort of a diagonal caterpillar?

Doesn't look like it--a spark from the reaction mangles the system. A shame; it would have made a cute c/9 diagonal caterpillar project.

There is another impediment: the blinker is not relocated strictly diagonally, so the track wouldn't be reburnable even if there were no problem with the spark.

It's not an example of a spark; it's an example of an edge of an area of activity that can be perturbed by the tail of an Eater 1. Cf. e.g. these reactions:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

This is Octagons 2 big brother.
The nice thing is that the 4 parts always show the figure at different period.

x = 25, y = 15, rule = B3/S23

OK thanks,
and this is a variation of Fumarole?

x = 14, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

This p4 oszillators is very small, but not in the wiki. I am sure that somebody knows its name.

x = 12, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

I would say that the P5 is a variant on Octagon, actually. And yes, both of those are known.

I don't know if it has a name, but it's made of two "wings" of the Windmill.

There are a large number of small, unnamed oscillators. Most can be found In the "osc" section of Jason Summers' jslife collection (which can be downloaded here). Most named objects can be found in Stephen Silver's Life Lexicon, although it may be difficult to search for the name of a particular pattern.

Is this known? a small R2B converter

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

Is this useful? (Or previously known?)
Maybe... It can be run with Bellman to make a pretty small sgr or a G2H converter?

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

Yes. This reaction was found in 1972 by David Buckingham. It is used, for instance, in Paul Callahan's Herschel receiver.

Here I found a small version of the Windmill

x = 10, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

Huh, I don't recognize that one! Seems as if someone should have stumbled on it before, so I won't get my hopes up too far -- it's the same initial G+halfblockade reaction as Guam's 2G->H circuit from a few years ago, which was also used in a big old stable reflector of Paul Callahan's:

Code: Select all

#C Scorbie on the left, Guam on the right
x = 143, y = 34, rule = LifeHistory
.A99.A$2.A99.A$3A97.3A10$125.2A$104.A20.2A$104.3A$107.A12.A$106.2A13.

3A92.A7.A.A$13.A103.A!
But I haven't seen that first block replaced by a B-heptomino before. The spark to the right is very small, so there's some hope that the pre-Herschel can be settled down into a block in the right location.

If we're very very lucky, Bellman (or 'catalyst' or 'ptbsearch') can rebuild the other block, resulting in a color-changing stable reflector. The Snark is color-preserving, so a completion of this would fill in a big hole in the stable circuitry toolkit, especially if it can be made into a G-to-H, or if it's made out of Spartan objects.

A G-to-H isn't as unlikely as it looks -- there's a lot of space to put a transparent junk object to move the reaction away from the danger zone, while restoring that second key block. Any given transparent object location is really really unlikely to work, of course... but you never know, it might be time for a lucky find in the Hunting of the (Color-Changing) Snark.

Thanks for the info! I guess it's a long shot, just what I expected when I wrote that post. Still, I'll try. (and I don't mind if anybody else tries.)
