Almost pi-to-g.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
7b2o$3o4b2o$obo$obo!
This is a really good, really old reaction, frequently rediscovered -- the "three-block shifter", just after one of the blocks has been hit with a glider and turned into a pi.

Two transparent beehives:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

o!
I don't see an occurrence of these anywhere, unless I skipped some obscure part of the website.

Glider insertion technique:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory
12.3D$12.D$4.A.A5.3D$4.2A$5.A12.C$2.D8.3C4.C.C$2D9.C.C4.2C$.2D8.C.C!
Thanks! I didn't think I needed this at the time, but I just thought of several uses for it. Here it is, with full cleanup, for a mere 4 gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
16bobo$16boo$17bo4$bbo$oo$boo12bo$14bo$14b3o4$8bo$7boo$7bobo$$5bo$5boo
$4bobo!
EDIT: I thought this might be useful for injecting a glider behind B29, but it fails for all three variants; in two of them, the B29's HW spark interferes with the advancing pseudopod three times before it becomes a glider, and in the third variant, it does so twice, so something more brute-force (e.g. a wave advancing at c) might be required.

On a more positive (yet trivial) note, this does solve the synthesis of 9 out of the 12 unsolved quasi-spaceships with a glider following a crab (+1 more, making the pi from block+glider), and 9 out of 12 with a glider following 27P4H1V1.1 (+2 more, making the pi from block+glider).

synthesise-patt.py knows about 22 three-glider collisions that produce the b3o$b3o$obo$2o! object (or something with the same population sequence that converges to it within a few ticks):

Also, is that four-glider tub with tail synthesis known? I didn't notice it in Mark Niemiec's database.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

It's either unknown or poorly-documented--I've occasionally wished for a TWIT synthesis just like that, though I don't remember the exact reasons it would have been helpful in the past. As a proof of concept, it can be used to improve a 13-cell still life:

Code: Select all

There's another one in Mark Niemiec's database, but the clearance isn't as good.

Code: Select all

It also works with your example.

I'll probably add those and some related fast components to the fast components collection.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Also, is that four-glider tub with tail synthesis known? I didn't notice it in Mark Niemiec's database.

It's either unknown or poorly-documented--I've occasionally wished for a TWIT synthesis just like that, though I don't remember the exact reasons it would have been helpful in the past. As a proof of concept, it can be used to improve a 13-cell still life:

There's another one in Mark Niemiec's database, but the clearance isn't as good. ...
I wasn't aware of this one, thanks! Both of these just modify the 2-glider Eater edge-shooter, but this new one is clearly superior, because it is less obtrusive.

I just added them. I split the two-glider fast preblock->tub component into a one-glider fast preblock->cis-bun component and a one-glider fast cis-bun->tub component (which is how I found it in the first place). I didn't do the same thing for the first two fast preblock->beehive components because the preblock interacts sooner, but I could change my mind in response to a good argument by someone else or seeing that most cis-bun with tail formations are compatible.

The swan is very edge-repairing on its SE side, and a swanstretcher can stop a lot of fuses without damaging itself.

Well... definitely! But it's not new. It's an H-to-R converter that's been known for about a quarter of a century now -- part of the L156 Herschel conduit:

Does LOM get used in any conduits? While this isn't a complete conduit, the active region goes very far. The block gets destroyed in generation 191, giving a lot of time to do something with it.

Nothing much yet. This might be worth posting in Rhombic's old LOM discussion thread -- I dug up a couple of posts with LOM conduits in the linked thread, but they aren't really useful ones yet.

The 5c/9 signal injector in the same thread is interesting, but the reasonable ways to make an input LOM all seem to do it the easy way, by colliding two gliders.

I've pretty much already said in that thread, probably multiple times, everything I usually want to say about LOM conduits. So I'll save a couple of paragraphs and not say anything more here.

That's a good H-to-LOM, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with this new incomplete LOM-to-maybe-X. It might make sense to focus on finding a lot more direct H-to-LOM options before bothering to worry about what we can turn a LOM into... that would let searches be done that only find things that fit a known H-to-LOM input conduit.
