Yes, I (re?) discovered it when trying to find the legendary p64 oscillator that appears to be permanently lost:

This was the first period independent
B-heptomino turn and yielded the P256 gun (as shown), but since
the released gliders pass through the mechanism, this is the only
period glider gun possible (with a Figure 8, the gliders
can be removed, and 4 B's cycled, but defeats the purpose).
Ergo, still no period 64 gun!

Wait a minute -- that seems to indicate that you *did* have a P64
oscillator at this time, made of 4 B's and and 4 90-degree turns
each composed of four blocks and a Figure 8. At that time, no
P64 oscillator was known at all; my attempts to construct one
along those lines failed. Even now with the full b7 toolkit this
would be the simplest P64 oscillator. What does it look like?

I'm puzzled about this too. For a while I thought he might have
meant a Kok's galaxy rather than a figure 8: A galaxy will fit in
the middle of the 'p64'; there are timings that delete the gliders
and other timings that let the B-heptominos pass unharmed, but none
that do both.

At one point DJB intimated that he did have a gliderless P64 oscillator,
but never showed it to me. I'll have to ask him if he still has it.

He told me about it (and all the guns) by phone in July, which is how
long I've been biting my tongue. He said the p64 was the squarest
oscillator he ever saw.

I found the p128 but had no luck rediscovering the elusive p64.

So, I stripped it some more, and I now have what I believe could be the smallest Garden yet, fitting in a bounding box of 11x5 with only 27 living cells.

Achim probably just put the link there as a placeholder for when GoE12 gets discovered, and the page it links to hasn't actually been made yet.

By any chance were you either checking only predecessors that fit within the same bounding box, or checking only predecessors that fit within a bounding box one larger on all sides? Trying either of those while setting an all-off background elsewhere gives no solutions for me with JLS, but expanding it one larger gives the above one. For Garden of Eden/orphan–checking searches, it's often better to set unchecked cells (with U) to surround the pattern rather than off cells, to rule out local predecessors that leave more distant junk (or you can leave a four-cell — if I remember right — border around everything if you'd rather, but the search will take longer [EDIT: no, this doesn't work, please disregard it]).

I think that's right. Most of the story seems to be told in this article. The story actually started back in 1973 with Mark Niemiec (see second paragraph) (!).

At almost the same time in 1973, Mark Niemiec was investigating appearance of known common forms (B, R, Lom, Pi, etc) within the histories of these same objects. He showed me a listing of the most promising observation: a B-heptomino run to 70 generations (quite a feat in those days!), where he had highlighted the evolution of a new B-heptomino at generation 64, turned 90 degrees. And since the B-heptomino releases a natural glider in generation 41, period 64, 128, and 256 guns appeared to be an absolute certainty as soon as someone tamed the pesky debris behind this new B! But most work in those days was done manually (gasp!) and this was not a manual job.

In 1990/91,

Resurrecting Niemiec's old listing of the B-heptomino reproducing itself at generation 64, I set about to create the period 64 gun to start.

I needed a spark source and since most of the neat spark toys that exist now had yet to fall out the search programmes, only period 8 (and subperiods) was practical (Figure-8, Kok's Galaxy, Emulators, Mold, Mazing).

With these tools, the new B-heptomino was quickly isolated, but the new (and unanticipated challenge was to remove the block created by the B-heptomino at generation 15. Adding to this distress, the new B-heptomino makes such a sharp turn that removal of debris block from the previous B-heptomino at generation 57 becomes a problem. Ok, the debris removal process would need to remove the two blocks and the residual debris from the turn reaction.

After a few weeks work, the reaction is found, the P64 gun constructed and lo and behold, the glider produced by each B at generation 41 smashes into one of the Galaxys used. Sheesh, I forgot that the glider passes back through the mechanism! No problem, we'll just find another way to turn a B-heptomino and use these two in combination. More work and the elegant sparking of a B-heptomino to produce the P73 glide symmetry turn; debris dies cleanly, while removing the generation 15 block, and the glider produced by the B removes the block from the previous B. This time we'll test a quarter of the mechanism before building the whole thing. Now the glider just nicks the figure-8 for the P73 turn. Even more work, a P64 turn that removes the debris, both blocks, and the glider.

Then 1995:

Attempts to produce period-independent track pieces (bounded only by still lifes) had failed over the previous 23 years to yield much of anything useful. Suddenly (clouds open, sun shines, angels sing) a fluke placement of a block (and subsequent stabilizing blocks), produces the period 64 B-heptomino turn dreamt of in 1973 (as classy and elegant as it was supposed to be). This was the first period independent B-heptomino turn and yielded the P256 gun ... but since the released gliders pass through the mechanism, this is the only period glider gun possible (with a Figure 8, the gliders can be removed, and 4 B's cycled, but defeats the purpose). Ergo, still no period 64 gun!

I like the "clouds open, sun shines, angels sing" part. That kind of discovery doesn't show up very often, but it sure is awesome when it happens.

The one part of that story that seems a bit fuzzy to me is the date. I printed off that step-by-step listing of the B heptomino (which took up a lot of paper), but I thought it might have been on the University of Waterloo Math/Unix system, which would have put it more like 1975, but I'm sure Dave's recollection of the process is better than mine, as he was actively involved in the search for several decades. It may very well have been somewhere else; I just can't think of where it was that had a printer whose typeface was like that. I might still have that listing in a box somewhere. It's hard to remember details with great clarity that happened almost 50 years ago.

I remember noticing that the B turned 90 degrees after 64 generations (and, not only that, it made two Bs heading in opposite directions, although one looked much easier to save than than the other). I played with that for several weeks without any success. Of course, the initial block was a major obstacle. One of the key discoveries that Dave made that hadn't occurred to me was that instead of going B-to-B, one should go H-to-H (which is the preferred method today), which eliminates the block problem.
