I tested all the common still lives. none of them even come close to working.

So, the only hope is to use a Bellman catalyst to replace it, rather than trying to restore an uncommon sacrificial object. Hotdogpi's pattern seems on the right track, though that specific type of interaction seems doomed to fail, as there isn't enough room on the right to save it.
i agree. also, it might be better to continue this in a new thread to avoid clutter.

Yikes, that's a useful simplification that I didn't think of looking for! It should be preferred over the standard Scorbie Splitter whenever the extra glider output (stopped by the white eater in the pattern below) isn't needed:

Code: Select all

There are piles of Scorbie Splitters used as merge circuits in the new pi-calculator printer, for example, that really ought to be replaced with this version.

Yes. That's a sidewalk, which can be created with two pi heptominoes (which is exactly what the synthesis you showed does).

This variant of the eater2 inside the Scorbie Splitter may give more room for catalysts to do something fun. (Twit shown as an example)
Or alternatively just decrease the cost as is, cause it is less crowded

That eater 2 variant isn't even synthesizable

EDIT: This form seems better, however, it will still be probably worse than the standard variant. In addition, the twit isn't spartan either

That's certainly possible, at least theoretically. We wouldn't know for sure about decreased cost unless we created slow-salvo recipes for every orientation of that eater2 variant, and added them to slsparse.

However, the odds of a cost savings seem pretty low, given that that eater2 variant has never appeared naturally in any soup census in Catagolue -- not even from symmetric soups! -- whereas the standard eater2 and many other variants have appeared thousands of times. Appearances in Catagolue are a fairly decent proxy for construction difficulty.

EDIT: No soups for the aircraft carrier / hat version either. This one has a synthesis listed on Catagolue (even though it's also a pseudo still life) -- but the synthesis is one that would be quite painful to convert into a slow-salvo synthesis.

... So, long story short, it's pretty unlikely that anyone will be doing the rather large amount of work needed to follow up on this. It's kind of a solution in search of a problem, since slsparse has no difficulty building standard eater2s and fishhook eaters in close proximity, and nobody has yet come up with anything useful to do with that standard dependent-conduit output glider.

Someday maybe a direct Spartan highway-robber reflector or lane-shifter may show up that can rescue that glider, and then it might well make sense to look at this again!

While I agree with your point, that SL doesn't seem to be there cause it's a pseudo SL.
That being said, I wholeheartedly agree (hoping for the next small thing), and posted the above post just for what it's worth.
Thanks.

Edit: Also, to clarify, only the top-right part is relevant, it's equally good to have a hat in the bottom for example:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 9, rule = LifeHistory

Well then why not use this variant, which at least has a known synthesis?

Its third soup seems to imply a relatively trivial seed:

EDIT: No soups for the aircraft carrier / hat version either. This one has a synthesis listed on Catagolue (even though it's also a pseudo still life) -- but the synthesis is one that would be quite painful to convert into a slow-salvo synthesis.
Of course there are no soups for it. It may have occurred frequently enough, but such occurrences would have been ignored. Apgsearch splits pseudo-objects into their components, and indexes the components, but not the pseudo-object itself. I don't see why it doesn't just list both; it should be easy to do, but until such a change is made, pseudo-objects will only have explicit syntheses listed.

It would be entertaining to start a new separately censused instance of Catagolue at some point -- maybe run it against 32x32 soups, with that change made to pseudo-object counting. Could have all the excitement of the first Schick engine, loafer, etc., turning up, all over again...

Or maybe sticking with 16x16 soups would be better, just to make it clearer what changes to the statistics are due to the difference in pseudo-object processing.

Is that Pi-on-Ship-[3,11]-crawler/fuse known? Yes in all likelihood. Seems not very useful:

Another example that comes to mind is there are a lot of cases where it would be useful to collect soups for various pseudo-still lifes -- block on eater, beehive on loaf, or whatever. Currently it's hard to dig up soups that might help synthesize these pseudo combinations more efficiently. But adjusting the census code to track these separately would probably be a highly non-trivial design effort.

There is a symmetry for that on Catagolue. That might be useful (at least if it gets more soups).
I am tentatively considering myself back.
