There are a couple of R-to-Gs that come even closer to working, since their catalysts are all pretty far forward of the R input.

The problem I'd really be worried about with this candidate PFx53R is the input. I can vaguely imagine that there might be a way to spark a glider from behind to sneak a pi into such a horrible location -- or maybe collide an *WSS with a glider. Theoretically.

But can anyone actually find a way to get a pi to that location in practice, with a signal from the east or southeast -- no matter how expensive the method? (No fair sending in gliders from the northwest, or *WSS from the west.)

If not, maybe that can provide some reasonable limits about where to forbid catalysts, in conduits that are supposed to be pi-to-X. Something like this, maybe:

I think I've seen a reaction travel orthogonally a quite considerable distance with a fairly thin reaction profile, but it was in a completely useless situation (it went backwards into the conduit, and said conduit was unlikely to be connectable anyway). It appeared from something like a HWSS with a damaged back end, sorta like those back-end damaged B's that make very edgy HF/TL's with a very thin reaction envelope.

If we can find a usable input, though, there IS actually a way to get an output, by replacing the far away block with a different clean up method:

Nice! Looks like there are probably quite a few broken *WSS variants that will settle into a far-forward pi. That gives us something to hope for, for all the currently impossible pi inputs that people have posted in the last few years.

Just for the record, something along these lines is also possible with the block restoration in the glider-activated variant. It's nowhere near worth the current price, but it works, so some simpler H-to-still-life could theoretically do something similar:

There's also the issue that the other side isn't getting regenerated. It might be possible to make fully reburnable, but it sound like it would be far easier to focus on other reburnables...

They are probably all new, as long as you were using an up-to-date knownrotors file. For the most part, nobody keeps track of oscillators with periods below 7, as they are very common, and they can usually be found directly using WLS or JLS.
