One could make an agar of glider streams with a certain timing between two adjacent gliders in the same line, and one could make the period of that arbitrarily large, so there's no upper limit.
As for the highest-period agar that I know of that doesn't fit into a larger family, Achim's p144 was originally found on a cylinder without the stabilizing blocks, so that could count as an agar. If one wanted to, one could probably figure out a way to make the copies interact across both spatial dimensions.

Yup, it's easy to construct agars with arbitrarily large periods.

What about naturally occurring ones, though?

The other day I found this one, which appears to be p9440 on the face of it, though it's actually only p590 if you take the symmetry into account:

OK, it's a wick, not an agar, but the principle remains - its period can be made larger than any integer just by making the universe wider and moving the blocks further apart.

You'll need to tweak the source to port it into a modern system (and blend it with Golly.)

N.B. It's extensively explored, but due to its random nature I'm sure there's more to find.
Many high-period oscillators are found by this program.

Has anyone thought about how to define apgcodes for agars and wicks?

I'm approaching 80,000,000,000 soups in T29x33 and I've got quite a few duplicates. I can assign apgcodes to the bounded patterns that crop up, but I'd like to do something similar with the unbounded ones.

They don't have bounding boxes and so the canonicalisation will have to be defined differently; as described on the wiki, a pattern must have both a leftmost column and an uppermost row, one or both of which won't exist in this case.

In addition to trying all orientations and phases, I could generate all possible "rotations" of the torus on both axes too, looking for the shortest / lexically first result. I think this would work, but it'll be dog slow; classifying the P9440 agar I posted earlier will mean generating 31 * 32 * 9440 * 8 = 74,915,840 candidate apgcodes!

Perhaps something like this is a better idea:
  • Generate all phases of the pattern and iterate over those which have minimum population.
  • For each such phase, generate all eight rotations/reflections.
  • For each generated pattern, find the row(s) and column(s) which have minimum population, and iterate over all combinations of them.
  • Rotate the torus to put the selected row/column of the pattern at the top left and calculate its apgcode.
  • Keep the shortest / lexically first such code.

  1. Compare the period, modulus, period allowing displacement but not rotation or reflection, or some other similar property of the latest agar as long as it's consistent.
  2. Find the smallest tiling parallelogram with toroidal geometry. Store any group of three variables that will be the same for that parrallelogram and for any rotations or reflections but won't be the same for other parallelograms (e.g. area, perimeter, and measure of smallest interior angle). (This will cost more than the next step relative to how many agars it will eliminate, but it's necessary for doing the next step properly since the same agar could show up in boxes of different sizes.)
  3. Compare the agar's minimum and maximum populations with those of the other agars. If it's the same, compare the populations of other phases that are the same number of generations after some phase chosen in a way that will be consistent for duplicates. You don't have to compare the populations of every phase, but don't just compare a group of five or so adjacent phases in case both agars consist of gliders going towards still lifes or groups of still lifes that happen to have the same population
  4. Compare the number and type of each type of object (e.g. how many blocks, how many blinkers, etc…) for several different phases, again not comparing only for adjacent phases
Chances are that the only non-duplicates that this will miss will be trivial agars, such as a blinker and a block with two different relative positions not interacting in two runs with the same size grid. If you plan to find the apgcodes anyway, then disregard my list.

Also, here's an example of how this soup could have been found with only half of the area (and therefore only about half of the cells that would have needed to be just right (Obviously, there are predecessors, but the point that halving the area makes that agar more likely to appear still stands.)).

Instead of defining a "canocial apgcode", OCAgar uses a database file, much like the one used in dr, and the apgcode of the first occurence of the agar is considered canocial. (It might be better to put such a database online.) There's also a script to merge two such databases.

I don't know; But I can expect it will be quite slow due to being a Golly script, instead of an individual script.

I think this program deals with all the symmetries in an agar, at least more than square tori.
Do you mean by the symmetries in the readme file?
Or is there a different type of agar (or something you are going to search) not being dealt with RandomAgar?
Cause I'll be very interested to know if there's any new search space. Thanks :)
