For the moment, I don't see any easy ways to reduce the synchronization count, but it may be possible to get to 7 gliders.
There's another interesting angle of attack, whenever we decide to try this again. The 2G and 3G splitters desperately need to be sorted into categories also. It's should be fairly easy to find splitters that can produce various pairs or triples of input gliders directly, with the addition of a 90-degree turner or two. Which means that we might well be able to reduce 7G to let's say 3G by adding very roughly 2*2 + 5*2 objects -- two 3G splitters, and six 90-degree turners with exactly the right timing. Or to be a little less ambitious, use three 2G splitters and get from 7G to 4G at the cost of a couple more objects.

Maybe the brain-dead easy way to do this would be to write a search program that adds all possible 90-degree turners to all of the 2G splitters in every possible way, and then just builds a huge database of all the pairs of gliders that come out. Let's call that another project for another week.

Meanwhile, the seed fits inside 200x200 now. More squishification is very possible, but it starts to require larger and larger rebuilds of various sections. Starting from scratch with a less tangled design (after studying the version below to see where the annoying parts are) would probably be more effective beyond this point.

It's a 75-object constellation now. That count could definitely be reduced quite a bit also, but again it doesn't seem like a high priority.

We'd have to find a 1G seed for what we normally think of as the two-glider mess--another job for the manifesting vapors of a synthesise-patt-1G-seed script. A better spark_search-based inserter for the actual 'wick' part of the wickstretcher could possibly remove another. Beyond that, 6G looks like a pretty firm lower limit.
Just to set some expectations: it will probably take my computer a few days to generate several gigabytes of fingerprints for all of these constellation collisions. Further bulletins as events warrant.

A moderator posted this somewhere else.
I'm going to bring it back:

Code: Select all

#C 5 beehives and 75 blocks produce a quadratically expanding
#C population when hit by a trigger glider...
Does this count as a one glider seed?
Yes. That's the old almost-Blockic one that's in Golly's current pattern collection -- Breeders/switch-engine-breeder-MR.rle.

There's also a new space-backrake breeder seed based on the same general idea, using slightly more modern methods. And that message includes an easy challenge for anyone wanting to get into the business of seed-making. It would involve changing just a very small part of that backrake seed, to make a standard space-rake (forerake) instead.

Added the guard glider (probably suboptimal):

Added the guard glider (probably suboptimal)...
I'm very slowly starting to learn some optimization tricks.

This addition is a two-object 180-degree OTT, plus a two-object 0-degree OTT to get some more clearance, followed by a three-object edge-shooting 90-degree OTT.

The edge shooter is likely to be suboptimal, because two-object edge-shooting OTTs are fairly common (but haven't all been picked out of the larger toolkit yet).

The 180-degree OTT + 0-degree OTT is an easier target for improvement, because it can be replaced at no cost with two 90-degree OTTs to get as much space as we want. There's no need for the 0-degree shifter unless it's useful for timing adjustment.

Which might happen sometimes. Just have to check. To test the timing, put in a CP0 turner along with a couple of boat turners:

Code: Select all

x = 222, y = 212, rule = LifeHistory

This is too slow by 12 = 4 mod 8, so a sufficiently fast edge-shooting CP4 should work here. We're kind of close to this not having enough adjustability, though, so let's also check what happens if fishhook turners replace one or both of the boats:

Every time a boat is replaced by a fishhook, it speeds the glider up by 6 ticks. So a sufficiently fast CP2 would also work, and it doesn't have to be as fast.

(Replacing both boats by fishhooks would theoretically solve the problem, except that the southwest fishhook turner doesn't fit where the boat did, so the circuit ends up too slow. From a complete survey of the CP0 group, I know that there aren't any faster CP0s than the one shown above, and only the one on the far right is a good enough edge shooter for this case anyway:

There's still a good bit more empty space to be taken out of that seed, but it may not be worth much more time investment. Probably someone will figure out how to reduce the number of synchronized gliders in the original recipe again, and then a slightly less tangled OTT network can be devised for the new recipe.
Good work!

For the moment, I don't see any easy ways to reduce the synchronization count, but it may be possible to get to 7 gliders.
Two proposals:

1) Could we add an yl4 category for the crab wickstretcher synthesis in the synthesis census?
2) Could we have a census on the best one-glider seed on catagolue as a reference?

That's a good idea. What's the objective function for measuring 'best'? (In glider syntheses, it's the number of gliders.)
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Bounding box? I assume that everyone will submit seeds constructed out of Spartan still lifes.

If yl categories can be added, then maybe at the same time yl78 and yl1344 categories could also be included? That would help get rid of a very very minor error message that shows up every time I run the LifeWiki auto-upload script:

I certainly wouldn't object to a new feature like this. Bounding box seems like a good primary metric, and either population or number of stable objects would make pretty good secondary tie-breakers.

On the other hand, it's not clear that the sub-specialty of 1G spaceship/rake/oscillator seeds is really big enough yet to need Catagolue support. So far we only have 1G seeds for
  • star, eater2 variant, and almost p256 oscillator from Golly's Patterns/Life/Syntheses/blockic-and-blockish-seeds.rle, from way back
  • LWSS, MWSS, and HWSS (knightlife and others)
  • Mitchell Riley's Cordership breeder pattern, Golly's Patterns/Life/Breeders/switch-engine-breeder-MR.rle
  • loafer
  • 3-engine Cordership
  • 2-engine Cordership
  • Gosper glider gun
  • 58P5H1V1
  • space rake
  • space backrake
  • crab
  • crab-based wickstretcher...
Are there others that I've forgotten about? Certainly a large number of oscillators and guns could easily be compiled with slsparse, with help from the script that builds a constellation that generates any arbitrary slow salvo. But I don't think that's the kind of seed constellation that anyone really wants to collect!

A linked page from the LifeWiki seed article could certainly keep track of this list easily enough, until and unless these things become a lot more mainstream than they are at the moment.

Non-Shinjuku syntheses can now can be added to Catagolue by including them in the multiline string literal at the beginning of diffupdate.py:

Those two particular linear-growth patterns are now in the usual place, which should hopefully silence the minor error message:

Wow, it works! To get top speed we'll have to change the order of the cleanup gliders; the glider triggering the fuse should be sent absolutely last thing -- after the gliders that clean up the wickstretcher debris, and eventually even after the entire construction recipe is sent out next to the unlit fuse, which will build the Snark or Scorbie Splitter using the block target that won't be there until the fuse is lit and burns all the way up past the recipe to the wickstretcher.

With the current setup it isn't possible to reach the absolute best speed limit of just-under-c/4. I guess the plan would be to clean up all the junk left over from the wickstretcher ignition, except for the one block that's directly in line with the fuse -- that won't get in the way of anything, but it can be used after the construction recipe is sent, to make the right configuration to ignite the fuse.

Anyone have any feedback on the two-wickstretcher plan, by the way? Are there any better methods of getting a second elbow to the right location? One small advantage of two wickstretchers is that the initial block creation and push shown in Goldtiger997's single-channel recipe won't be needed -- each cycle will just use an appropriately-placed block left over from the last cycle.

I think two wickstretchers (on each side) might mean that the minimum population of this new super-speedy Demonoid will be rather high, though -- there might always be at least one wick in place. Or is it possible to design around that? I guess both wickstretchers could be built and triggered at more or less the same time, so maybe there can be a moment when the population is low.

That recipe becomes better than 2-engine corderpush at distances of about 800k hd, if you use it as is, and of about 400k hd if you fill the gap with useful construction (keeping in mind that you have to be careful and not touch the wick).

The last quoted wickstretcher seed wasn't the smallest one, which I found confusing. Here's a small improvement as an excuse to re-post -- the idea being to replace a 180-degree-plus-0-degree turner combination with a single 180-degree turner from the correct bucket, saving a couple of objects.
Also did some more tightening up. There are lots of easy targets for improvement left here, though:

However, probably there's no point in working on this seed any more, because Goldtiger997 has posted a recipe variant on Discord that only needs eight synchronized gliders:

The Promised Reduction:

EDIT: using a ship makes it cleaner, but there may be other alternatives:

Would it be worth it to consider turners that leave behind a single object? It might make recipes cheaper.
Any sufficiently advanced software is indistinguishable from malice.

The Promised Reduction...
(seven synchronized gliders, none from the northeast)
Nice! I had gotten down to five synchronized gliders with some experimental versions on Discord:

Code: Select all

Your version is better, so salvaging what can be salvaged we get this 6G activation:

The bottom three gliders can probably be generated quite easily by an H-to-3G plus turners, so that would make a 4G activation that's still fairly compact, no awkward trombone slides.

Would it be worth it to consider turners that leave behind a single object? It might make recipes cheaper.
Definitely worthwhile, if someone wants to do the work -- but especially for 3G splitters. Maybe there are 4G dirty splitters, whereas clean two-object constellations top out at outputting three gliders.

As far as regular turners go, the current toolkit has complete coverage of phases and timing over a fairly wide range. In the middle of the range there are several, sometimes dozens, of OTTs that are completely interchangeable, with identical timing -- e.g., some of the ones that could be swapped in for a boat are shown here. So there might not be much point in collecting dirty versions of standard 0-degree, 90-degree, and 180-degree turners, at least unless they're outliers as far as timing goes.

Here's a 14G crab synthesis:

It may or may not be more amenable to conversion into a seed.

Seems pretty amenable to me. On Discord that crab recipe has been boiled down to a nice compact 4G seed, not too far from completion:

It should be fairly easy to bolt on existing technology for the wickstretcher conversion and the guard glider, and complete the last few connections in the southwest. If anyone wants to take it over, I won't be touching it for a few days at least.

If this seed ends up as a Pointless Optimization Game pattern, I'm thinking smaller bounding box should win, and number of objects and then population can be used as tiebreakers.

I found a method of turning the crab into a boatstretcher that requires only one glider to trigger it, so we're now down to only 6 synchronized gliders:

Good find! With Kazyan's contribution on Discord last night, it could be just three synched gliders -- or, well, might as well just connect it all up and see how it looks:

It could be tightened up a bit more here and there, for sure, but this is already a lot better: less than half the area of the previous best seed (131x110 instead of 194x174) and somewhat lower population (318 instead of 458).

Goldtiger997 posted a basis for a wickstretcher seed that only needs five synched gliders. Here's a version with the guard glider added in:

Code: Select all

x = 94, y = 79, rule = LifeHistory

$76.A!
It didn't take slsparse long to come up with a single-channel recipe for the above, with the blinkers in the right phase and everything. So I think this is the way to go as far as making a diagonally narrow wickstretcher seed.

Seems like this should be easily within range of 0-degree technology, since there are recipes available to fire gliders on lanes roughly +/-100 lanes to the sides of the single-channel stream -- 108 on one side, at least. Even the wickstretcher + guard glider component above seems to be well within that range, and a rebuild will make it a lot narrower. E.g., use a splitter where both outputs go the same direction, then two 90-degree turners. The current splitter plus two 90-degree turners takes up a lot of unnecessary space off to the southwest.

EDIT: Here's a slightly tighter version of a unidirectional 5G wickstretcher seed from Discord this morning:

Code: Select all

x = 91, y = 63, rule = LifeHistory

With luck Kazyan will come up with a better one, and turn it into a 1G seed also.

EDIT2: Yup, the future of wickstretchering is looking bright -- see below.

The 1G seed...
Great! Here, I'll write up a walkthrough of the first part of the construction process for finishing Pavgran's favorite among Goldtiger997's alternate seeds -- the one where there's a mango in a central role, with loafs-and-blocks in place of shillelaghs. The walkthrough is based on some notes I wrote up on Discord yesterday. The overview is

1) remove the incompatible splitter (two yellow eaters) and put in something that won't get in the way as much;
2) connect up the top glider with a very fast turner, maybe the same one as before, block off the other glider, get the wickstretcher activation working;
3) put a NW-traveling glider in the right place to activate the guard glider correctly (right timing and everything);
4) put in either a fast CP0 or fast CC0 turner to turn the lower glider from the splitter onto that same lane, and see whether it's off by 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 or 7 mod 8;
5) put in a fast CXn instead of the CX0 -- a CP1, for example, will be one tick slower than a CP0;
6) try it out, then count how many times 8 ticks it's off by, cross your fingers, and go and see if you have any turners in the right bucket.

If it doesn't work one way, but it seems like it ought to, just shift the splitter over by one, and you'll have to use all different 90-degree turners, so you get a second chance.

Let's make this the starting point:

The yellow and white OTTs both work fine in isolation, but they can't be combined -- the yellow splitter made out of two fishhook eaters is way too slow and big and silly and explodey.

So in other words, we need a different way to produce the two yellow gliders below from one NE-traveling glider:

Already we've reached the point where we just need to find exactly the right 90-degree one-time turner to replace the remaining NW-traveling glider, using the glider from the eaternlongboat splitter that's been blocked off (pun intended) by the red-and-yellow preblock.

You can see that the turn is a color-preserving turn, because there's just one cell on the inside of the turn (above the preblock). "CP" has one "C" in it, and one cell on the inside of the turn; "CC" has two "C"s in it, and two adjacent cells on the inside of the turn.

With a lot of cleverness we could figure out which category of turner would turn the NE-traveling glider into the NW-traveling glider. But it's easier to just do it by experiment: put in a CP0 turner and see what happens, then replace it as necessary. This is the fastest CP0 turner, a CP0col9:

Run it and you'll see that a CP0col9 is exactly 30 ticks faster than what we need -- the glider gets to its destination too soon.

That means a CP6col9 would be exactly 24 ticks faster than what we need, so the turner we want is going to be in the CP6 bucket. Furthermore, every column "costs" four ticks (because gliders move at c/4) -- so the turner we really want is one that's rated CP6col15, six columns, 6*4 = 24 ticks, slower than col11.

However, when we try a CP2col15, it's still eight ticks too fast. I think this is because a CP6 glider has traveled 6 ticks from the CP0 location, so it's already two columns over from its CP0 equivalent. Maybe I should revisit this classification scheme. But in the meantime, what we really want must be a CP6col17 --

-- and what do you know, it works!

The whole structure can then be tightened up a little bit. One-time turners modifying c/4 spaceships are very forgiving -- for example, you could move all the yellow objects except for the yellow activation glider northeast as far as you want, and the mechanism will still work perfectly well.

So my final candidate for a 4G seed that gives the mango its job back would be

Re: One Glider Seeds

I've done making 0-degree elbow push.

The following is slsparse-compatible (I think) version of the recipe:

As it is, it pushes an elbow 65536 hd forward. If you replace the only 1029 in the recipe with 1029+x, the elbow will be at distance 65536+2x hd. Nice and simple.

The length of the recipe is 1147823.
That recipe becomes more efficient (in terms of recipe length) than 0-degree corderpush at distances of more than 236596 hd.

Wonderful! I certainly don't see any problems with it yet. It's already compiled into a single-channel recipe, so the only way I can think of that it might not be usable would be if you cheated and put some single-channel gliders closer than 90 ticks apart. But that seems unlikely -- everything looks like standard 0-degree recipes.

Anyone have any feedback on the two-wickstretcher plan [for making a speed Demonoid]...? Are there any better methods of getting a second elbow to the right location?
@Pavgran, here's an implementation of the idea you mentioned on Discord last night, for 90-degree target block pushes. Crabs have two sites where wickstretchers can be added:

One of the wicks can be burned without destroying the wickstretcher, in such a way that a target block is left behind, a safe distance away from the wickstretcher lanes:

Code: Select all

x = 58, y = 47, rule = B3/S23
48b3o$50bo$49bo$46b2o$46bo2$44bo3b2o$43bobo2b2o5b3o$42bobo3bobo6bo$41b

bo$30bobo$29bobo$29b2o2$6bo$5bobo$3o3b2o$2bo$bo5$2o$obo$b2o!
The remaining wick can be ignited much later, and the result will be two target blocks at the two locations needed for a speed Demonoid (far-away and twice-as-far-away).

A nice thing about pushing in this 90-degree direction is that there's no need for a limited-width construction. A regular construction arm can produce the slow salvo for the seed directly, and that same construction arm can easily send gliders past the wick to construct child construction-arm parts, before the fuses are even lit.

The only slightly tricky part I can see is that structures (a Snark and a Scorbie Splitter) need to be constructed at the two target blocks, that are lined up with each other -- but we currently have one block on each side of the wickstretcher, so there's an offset that will have to be dealt with somehow.

At worst, the Snark -- the farthest-away part of the mechanism -- could be built with a slow^2 elbow, which would push a block across the wickstretcher lanes and then do the construction. But maybe there's a better option. Is there a way to clean up a wickstretcher crash -- i.e., the result of burning fuse #2 -- such that the final block ends up on the same side of the wickstretcher lanes as the block made by burning fuse #1? It's easy enough to move the fuse #1 block out of the way temporarily, so that the Snark could be constructed directly the cheapest possible way, by gliders from the parent constructor arm.
