While the p486 and p576 oscillators don't set the bounding box record for glider guns (as far as I know), maybe they do for XWSS guns since they can be made multibarrel with reflected gliders?

Probably not (if I'm understanding the suggestion correctly). Here are the current smallest p486 and p576 guns to compare with the new oscillator-guns (unless I missed a later version):

Both of these guns can actually be made double-barrelled also. So the oscillators don't seem to have any obvious advantage to make up for their larger size.

Anyway, it usually turns out that the extra reflectors and re-timers that you have to put in to be able to use multiple glider outputs in a *WSS construction, end up making things a lot bigger than just using multiple copies of the gun. No doubt there are exceptions, but they're annoyingly rare.

For the p67, just any old dot spark isn't really going to work, because the active reaction falls back one cell from the previous generation. A normal sparker preparing to produce a dot spark will interact with the active reaction too soon. I think only an umlaut spark (to coin a phrase) (what are those really called?) will produce a dot spark in that location at that time:

EDIT: if you could use 'umlaut sparks' to stabilise a period-90 oscillator, would it be called 'diaeresis'?
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Here are three gun partials...
These are exactly the sort of partials I was thinking of when I wrote this post. Did you do anything to remove the restriction you mentioned here, or is this simply a result of trying more configurations?

There's also this p48 potential gun that you posted in the oscillator discussion thread:
hotdogPi wrote:

A possible p48 gun; we just need sparks that are p16, p24, or p48

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 29, rule = B3/S23

A p12 spark could also work. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a sparker that has a strong enough spark and is far enough away from the block to work. If a working sparker is found, the overall gun could probably be reduced by replacing half with mold:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 27, rule = B3/S23

Just need a suitable sparker for this p160 shuttle. The spark can also be one cell to the left of where it is shown below. In addition, the temporary blinker can be removed early, and it will still function (but with 2 gliders per cycle instead of 4). Beluchenko's p40 almost works.

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 20, rule = B3/S23

Using eater 2s or another copy of the oscillator would also work, but neither of those solutions fit. It's possible that using a bunch of copies of this, at least two other reactions, and some clever trickery could yield a true-period p53 gun, but it would be large if not enormous.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Nice! It goes without saying that this yields a p53 oscillator:

Here is an extremely disappointing near-miss, where the blocks are reformed just one cell off:

Maybe an eater can be removed from the snark, allowing the active snark reaction to interact with the p53 engine. Like this, but in a way that actually does something useful:

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

Or maybe we could somehow support two copies of the engine with 3 gliders, instead of 4.

Is there any way to support the engine with just a glider, instead of a glider and eater? Like this, but working:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 28, rule = B3/S23

Actually, it might be possible to support it with a single catalyst, specifically a certain type of block factory. Here's a proof of concept:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 30, rule = Symbiosis
5.A$4.A.A12.2A$5.2A12.A$17.A.A$17.2A2$2.B$.2A$A3.2A7.2A$.2A.2A4.2A.2A

A12.2A$4.2A12.A.A$19.A!
That reaction leaves a block on each side, so there would have to be more permanent catalysts in order to get rid of the blocks instead of sacrificial boats.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Is there a way to make a p74 gun using my new oscillator? It seems like there are several possibilities:
1. Replace one eater with a conduit that creates a glider and allows the oscillator to continue. This might be difficult, due to the way the B-heptomino being eaten is essential for the p74 to work.
2. Replace one eater with a drifter that produces a spark, then spark to glider.
3. Have two of the p74s interact.
4. Have a p74 interact with Beluchenko's other p37, which is a sparker.

This isn't likely, but just in case:

After 186 generations, it rotates, which would allow for a p372 (=2*2*3*31) gun... if the catalysts didn't interfere when rotated 90°. Is there any way to provide the spark or use a fishhook replacement catalyst and move some of the catalysts so that it works in its 90° rotation phase, too?

Here's another p46 gun based on David Raucci and Martin Grant's p46 honey farm hassler:

Ooh, it's an AK-47 reaction gun, so "AK-46"?
