It's probably possible to edgeshoot that loaf predecessor or a similar one in a compatible way. I'll look at the loaf syntheses.

It often surprises me how few gliders are needed to tame an ugly-looking explosion. This reaction might be a good excuse for someone to finally write an efficient exhaustive enumerator for two-glider cleanups -- maybe lifelib-based?

If the enumeration could be ordered by the gliders' collision times, so that all early-collision options are tried first... then a lot of two-glider cleanup problems could be solved by a "run the search until you're bored" method. If there's a solution out there to be found, 99% of the time it will show up before the searcher's patience runs out. The search might not complete an exhaustive enumeration in any reasonable amount of time, but it wouldn't really make sense to check all the really unlikely options toward the end of the enumeration anyway.

-- I guess gencols could find a two-glider solution eventually, but it seems like that would need an awful lot of setup. Something more convenient is needed. A 2G cleanup is the only way to improve on this:

For some reason this older post caught my eye. It looks like an equivalent-cost synthesis is known: the current-best synthesis for xs17_mm0e96z56 is 7 gliders, also using a 5G conversion of a beehive.

I went ahead and boxed wwei47's equivalent converter for a random larger object, on the theory that it's a nice variant and would make it possible to build Spartan seeds for a number of fairly complicated-looking objects. The known 5G converter is all-at-once, but this variant is basically a three-stage converter -- would be really good for slow-salvo constructions of things. Not that we need to add block-on-snake to anything that I know of, but still... maybe someday?

Do these almost still lifes help at all? In both cases, I started with the Iwona active region (marked in red) and manually added a spark, looking for the region to repeat. While doing so, as a side effect, there were two times that a region stayed stable for a while, with the first being near generation 40 and the second being in generation 4.

The second potential base looks like anything using it probably already has a fairly cheap glider synthesis, but the first potential base is much too large for that to be anywhere near likely. According to synthesise-patt.py, there are 139 ways to make a honey farm perturbed in the same manner as it is by the phi spark with three gliders.

I don't think we need a separate thread for pseudo still lifes. Just use the still life synthesis thread.
