I reduced the cost of two 15-bit still lifes from 12 gliders to 11:

Since we are apparently trying to construct all fifteen-cell still lives with eleven gliders or fewer, I shall mention that a fast component could reduce xs15_3146o8gka4's cost.

Code: Select all

This predecessor of another xs15 looks synthesizable:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 25, rule = B3/S23

This is a Queen-bee + 8-bit-pattern collision.
Queen bee requires 3 or 4 gliders, cleanup can be done with 1 glider.
So we have 6 or 7 free gliders for an 8-bit-pattern.

Martin Grant's recent slow component allows to reduce the cost of another still life from 12G to 9G:

The four-glider-collisions database and script will be useful to you. It can be used to get a 3 or 4 glider synthesis for many small constellations. You should also check out the glider synthesis tutorial on the wiki, especially the section on using search programs to assist in creating syntheses.

The .sjk files are not meant to be read by a human. Instead, you should use the Golly Python script synth-const-4G-Python3.py (or synthesise-constellation-4G.py if you're still using Python 2). To do this, you need Python installed on your system and properly connected to Golly. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have a tutorial for this, but it's usually not too hard. If you have any difficulty, you can ask about it in the scripts forum.

Nice find! That can go a bit lower with the use of four tricks that are fairly standard these days:

1) use synthesise-constellation.py to find ways to build two still lifes (loaf and block) at once with three gliders instead of four;
2) use synthesise-patt.py to find ways to build the pi-heptomino plus the nearby block with three gliders instead of four;
3) notice that the blinker just deletes a block, so the blinker can be removed and the block can be shot down with a single glider instead;
4) use Seeds of Destruction to find a way to clean up two objects with one glider instead of shooting them down separately.

Combining all of these tricks produces a ten-glider recipe, which amazingly also happens to be a component -- with eight gliders you can now add Funky Inductor to any still life with a protruding domino edge:

Funky Inductor plus the two boat orientations make twenty-bit objects, so that reduces existing recipes on Catagolue for xs20_4airiiczx4a6 and xs20_ciiria4z4a6 from 39G to 10G.

Re: Still Life Synthesis Thread

Post by MathAndCode » August 14th, 2021, 12:43 am

I'm trying to synthesize one version of the drifty eater 3. I think that it's best to start with a relative of the heart of the Snark (such as xs28_oggs2uge1egozw643, xs22_g89fgkczd553, or xs32_ml1egu2sggoz56y0346) because that will provide a cheap way to make two-thirds or so of the still life. Here are concepts for the hard-looking steps:

Code: Select all

x = 192, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
88b2o4bo$4b2o83bo2b3o$5bo83bobo89b2o$5bob2o78b3o2bo3bo85bo$3b3o2bo77b

o$88bo91bo$174bo5bo$178bo!

Edit: Here is a completion for the second step:

Code: Select all

x = 127, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
17bo$18bo$16b3o2$12bo94bo$13bo94bo$11b3o92b3o3$3bo106bo10b2o$4bo19b2o

8bo2b3o100bo$17b2obo102b2o$20bo$20b2o$3o$2bo$bo!

Another edit: I reduced the cost by one glider.

Code: Select all

Third edit: I found a way to turn the fishhook into a boat, which I suspect will make making the table cheaper.

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
23bo$21bobo$22b2o7bo$11bo18bo$9bobo18b3o$10b2o4$23b2o$2bobo17bobo$3b2o

o12b2o$b2o16b2o11bobo$obo!

Fourth edit: A spark_search.py run did not yield a three-glider way to return a fishhook into a boat, but it did yield some other potentially useful reactions. Here are some examples:

Code: Select all

x = 392, y = 45, rule = B3/S23
156bo$156bobo$156b2o9$266bobo$267b2o$2bo264bo$obo$b2o10bobo$13b2o$14bo

I have posted all of the results in the Discord server.

Fifth edit: I finished the synthesis. (The step with three LWSSes was posted by wwei23 in the Discord server.)

Welcome back to "wwei23 uses weird objects in synthesis" time! Today, we will use a beehive at beehive and a long^3 barge to convert some still lives in a way that hopefully leads to a stillater synthesis! A different path is also being explored on the Discord server.

I reduced the extra long barge activation.
