I'm sorry to say this, and I don't intend anyone any disrespect, but this is flat-out wrong. The catalysis Scorbie mentions as being equivalent to an eater 2 is not one I commonly see either a BTS or an eater 2 used for, as it's typically equivalent to a block or at worst bookends:

In fact, the "exceptional cases" (of which there are a wide variety involving quite different reactions, hence "versatile") are far more typical for how BTS is used in conduits, hasslers, and similar in my observation. Scorbie's assertion that "almost every BTS catalysis" is of a type that can be replaced is thus exceedingly far from the mark. (The only place I can recall seeing a BTS used for the eater-2-equivalent catalyst is in one or two rare instances where a snake-type catalysis was also needed in the exact same location — like in this stupid contrived example I came up with as a demonstration of what I'm talking about and not in any way as an example of how a reaction of this general sort would come about):

I've already mentioned the conduit collection, which you should really look at, but for more examples of BTSs being useful in ways not at all equivalent to an eater 2, see... well, pretty much anything that canonically uses a BTS, but this thread in particular has some good examples.

There might be a more efficient method that perturbs a honey farm in some fancy way.

Also, about making a BTS from a slow salvo from the two directions where one must insert the pi from behind, instead of simply using a turner, one can take advantage of the fact that a block is a one-glider seed for a wing sequence in order to get a new target block.

Another edit: Here's a mostly complete synthesis of xs18_0mk9b4koz121 based on this soup. I had difficulty fitting gliders for the two blinker predecessors and the loaf in, but I suspect that it's possible using only two-glider syntheses, which would make this synthesis record-tying. It may even be possible to make this synthesis record-breaking by finding a one-glider cleanup for the top section (I stopped searching for cleanups after I found a two-glider cleanup for the top section, and I had only looked at a minority of the possibilities by then.) or employing some other clever trick.

Thank you for the advice. I figured that converting a continuous synthesis to an incremental synthesis would be easier, but thank you for setting me straight.

Adding the eater 2 section is the most costly step, so I figured that if I could construct that section with few enough gliders, the converters to take the synthesis the rest of the way would result in an overall cheaper recipe. I guess that I was wrong, though, so if I want to be useful, I should probably stick to synthesizing catalysts directly instead of making speculative intermediates. Do you have any recommendations for catalysts where a soup-based synthesis would probably be more efficient than the current synthesis?

The other day I came across the density article and learnt about dense still lives inside a square bounding box. Using JLS to search with maxpop constraints on the black-white reversal of CGoL (B0123478/S01234678), I found that a "frozen" snake pit has the highest population inside a 7×7 box. Then I synthesized it with 13G per this soup:
