Anyone up for building a fireship gun? Maybe we could name this gun "flamethrower"...

Anyway, here's the synthesis:

I'm surprised at how many clean still life syntheses exist, using *WSS and a copperhead.

Here is a tub:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 29, rule = B3/S23

I have also found pond, block and a couple others, but generally quite surprised.

Since the fireship is in all technicality a new ship in itself, has anyone searched for a true copperhead tagalong?

Or, perhaps more likely, a pushalong? Due to its blinker-bulldozing ability, which may or may not mean the front end could support something:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

I just calculated the heat of the fireship. It has a heat of 47.6.

I just verified this by hand, and got the same answer.

The wiki says the copperhead's heat is 27.8, while I get 26.8. That was calculated by the automatic algorithm I used to generate pattern images for my web page. I just did the calculation manually, and also got 26.8 (134 births + 134 deaths each cycle / 10). Can someone else please verify this result? I believe my algorithm is correct, but it would be nice to be sure.

Has been confirmed. Also, I found a new, much simpler method of doing so that stays entirely within Golly:
  1. Tile the pattern in space and time, with a time offset of one generation, until the number of copies equals the period. One way to do this:
    1. Copy the original pattern.
    2. Advance by one generation.
    3. Paste another copy of the original pattern at some sufficiently-large offset from the previous copy.
    4. Repeat the last two steps, always using the same offset.
  2. Select and copy the entire pattern, but don't cancel the selection.
  3. Advance one generation.
  4. In XOR mode, paste clipboard contents at the same place you copied it from. (This is why you don't cancel the selection.)
  5. Dividing the resultant population by the period gives the heat of the original pattern.
(It's really much simpler than it sounds; I'm just not the best at explaining things.)

Oops! I just noticed that I used the word "automagic", which I sometimes use, but was a typo for "automatic" here.

That's very similar to what I did by hand here to double-check. I used my my own DOS Life program, and did this:
  1. Create n (in this case 10) copies of the pattern on one field, each advanced one generation from the previous. Save.
  2. Convert to a living state in an unsupported color (e.g. dark brown).
  3. Advance the entire field one generation.
  4. Count the births, which are shown in bright white cells.
  5. Re-load the pattern. Turn on shadows (i.e. ghosts of cells that were alive at one time). Advance the field one generation.
  6. Count the shadows, which must have died in this generation. Verify that they match the births!
(Actually, to keep things simpler, I counted each of the ten images separately, and only counted the left half of each, as both spaceships are symmetrical).
It wouldn't surprise me if there were an even easier way to do it in Golly, by using a custom rule.

If you placed the 10 phases of the ship and counted the population, advancing one step in B3/S0145678 will leave all cells that would be born and all cells that would die.

What's its apgcode?

The complexity of the thing just makes me want to live inside it.

Is it wiki page worthy?

Probably not a good idea. If you include objects like this, it seems like you should also include pages for the 168 rakes in Paul Tooke's high-period c/5 rake collection, for example... there are a lot of equivalently complex constructions out there.

A wiki page seems like a good idea if a pattern / object / mechanism has been mentioned by several people in several places, to the point where someone might want to look it up and find out what it is. Or maybe if it provides a new solution to a problem, so that people might want to use it as part of larger patterns.

Generally you can safely wait a year or two and see if those larger patterns actually show up, before adding a definition for the component...!

Are you meaning that I should probably add a page if there's a significant and notable technological breakthrough in c/10 rake technology?

Well, I'm just making this stuff up as I go along, just like everyone else. But yes -- let's say someone comes up with a new period 10N tagalong for pairs of c/10 fireships, and the sparks from two pairs can interact to make a new small p10N c/10 rake. That new rake would be small enough that it would inevitably get used as a component in larger constructions -- just like the "back and forth LWSS thing" used six copies of glider_rider's c/10 rake, with adjustments here and there.

But even glider_rider's rake is big enough that it doesn't really need its own entry in the LifeWiki. If someone wants to find out what high-period rakes have been built from copperheads and fireships, there's already a link in the fireship article that will lead them to the right place.

There are certainly much smaller c/10 rakes out there waiting to be found, with a little experimentation -- and once they're found, they'll probably get used in most future c/10 constructions. At that point a separate article on "glider_rider's c/10 rake" would be kind of anachronistic.

Anyway -- again, this is all just my opinion, but it seems like there are plenty of red links left to turn blue in the LifeWiki, before we have to worry about naming and defining brand-new large composite spaceships like this one.

It's true, the hole structure is mostly trivial. The slow speed and the horizontal variability of the block eating fireships in the glider_rider's c10 rake make it easy to fix the construct, even for someone with my limited skills. The idea was to reduce the count of fireships by merging the different circuits and giving some fireships more than one job.
There is one little improvement. At the forerake on the left side the two circuits at the bottom are pretty interlaced. The glider leaving the left circuit snagged on the right circuit. So i had the fireship that formed an obstacle to move in the direction of its ship in front. That shortens the glider_rider's c10 rake.

I tried to scale down the c10 p192 lwss backrake again. Still there are the three circuits, but now it is quite compact and lost another two fireships.

Code: Select all

x = 304, y = 272, rule = B3/S23
