That was one of my first (probably independent) discoveries in ConwayLife, although I found it in the context of adding cells to a loaf.

I noticed that this partial had a loose connection between front and back components, so I tried to support the front with XWSSs. The first thing I tried gave the rake. I wasn't able to find any other useful XWSS placements, but I wasn't exhaustive in my search.

really nice!

This shows there are still relatively small patterns out there waiting for discovery!

Which brings me to one of my long term favourites: If we could have soemthing similar to the WLS "fixed" option for oscillators, just for spaceships, then we could make a new search space available, i.e. small p_2n or p_3n cores supported by p_n spaceships that are then elaborated in a second step.

E.g. that was how I found the 3c/6 block eater with a (long lost) custom version of lifesrc in the early 2000s...

Unfortunately, my programming skills are no longer up to date to modify modern programs accordingly.

Double forward rakes aren't traditionally counted as smaller than their single-output versions. They're just different rakes (and, very often, less useful ones).

However, I noticed that there was a point at which the two halves of 117P9H3V0 separated and had a loose connection. I used a reverse JLS search for a connecting component until I saw something that I thought I recognized. I looked through the collection of knightt results and found a ship with that component. After that, the wings were easy to solve.

If searching for symmetric spaceships at a period is as difficult computationally as searching for asymmetric (including not having glide symmetry) spaceships at half of that period, then why do we have multiple asymmetric spaceships with period six but no symmetric spaceships with period eleven? I'm sure that it's not due to lack of potential frontends. Here's one example:

That makes sense for glide-symmetric searches, as it's essentially a p/2 search; That does not make sense for symmetric searches at all. No, the number of unknown states is not halved - it just reflects an asymmetric search. And first of all you need a r11 debruijin graph, which is not feasible.

Glide symmetric searches don‘t really halve the number of generations! Only near the axis this poses additional restrictions on the pattern evolution as does ordinary symmetry. Farther away from the axes the search actually is just divided in two Distinct areas with half the number of generations.

This can be rather used to study the effect of the ordering of the search list on the search speed, btw.

Both symmetry and glide symmetry can be thought of as an alternative boundary condition on the search area (alternative to the pattern not evolving over the boundary). This extension of the search space often allows one to find small repeatable parts, the building blocks for assembling bigger spaceships (like e.g. grey ships).
