You can create any glider gun period with constant number of initial cells. Think of duplicator and three snarks, you just need to adjust the timing and placement properly.

On the other hand inside some

box you can't place all the possible guns, as inside a

box there is 2^(w * h) possible patterns (and thus periods), which limits your options. More precise for very large period N the optimal

bounding box should be in order of magnitude of log(N), or in therms of

bounding box a square with √log(N) side.

I and dvgrn have created a gun script that generates glider guns of logarithmic size for large periods (above 9K), and although the

bounding box is not optimal the convex hull is.
