sadly the current arbitrary threshold number for the repeat time needed for a conduit is 300, so it does not make the cut. dvgrn does not like these glider reflector stabilization too...

well, how about repeat time 299? :D

I agree. There are plenty of H→G conduits. (The elementary conduits folder has 109, but some probably do the same thing with different sets of catalysts.) I'll start going through them and see if there's one that works.

Edit: None of them work. I might try to create something myself.

Really, is that all? That means that with a very minimal weld, this Herschel conduit just barely squeaks in under the 300-tick limit and becomes an Official Herschel Conduit that belongs in gmc_nxtman's collection. Here it is with 299-tick recovery time:

EDIT: Apologies for the duplicated content with Jormungant's post above. Sometimes it seems as if the PHPBB system just fails to warn me that somebody else has posted ... but probably I'm just being unobservant.

well the natural glider from the H is rather problematic, so only unconventional connections works, like an h-to-p and a few h-to-b and h-to-g that are not producing it. It is a tall order, but I cannot rule every possibility easily.

(@dvgrn, I posted that weld first :D, not that it is going to be popular/useful as you mentioned)

well, there is this, but replacing a block from a H is not exactly a trivial task.

I think we could use some new conventions for this kind of PASTET-assisted mechanism, so that it's not necessary to read the LifeViewer commands to see exactly where the illegal interference happens. Can anybody make some variation of this work?

EDIT: Yay, it works now -- thanks, Chris! The rest of this message is now out-of-date:

Nope. This is a known bug in LifeViewer. I reported it together with the no-drawing bug, but only that was fixed.
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring

That idea could date back to June, when I was trying to modify a bandersnatch with that eater+boat weld. There are some periodic bumpers based on that, where the oscillator is used just to delete a blinker in time:

I think we could use some new conventions for this kind of PASTET-assisted mechanism, so that it's not necessary to read the LifeViewer commands to see exactly where the illegal interference happens. Can anybody make some variation of this work?
Fixed, thanks.

Argh, what is it about LWSSes that they always show up traveling in the maximally inconvenient direction, from the point of view of repeat time? The previous known X-to-L conduit is almost as awkward as this one:
I just saw something from here (demonstrated in this post with with the Herschel formed from a B-heptomino).

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
b2obo$2b3o$3bo15$bo$obo$obo$bo!
The bait restoration only looks somewhat promising, but I figured that I'd mention it because the LWSS is emitted in a direction perpendicular to the direction that the Herschel would likely come from instead of straight back, which would allow a quicker repeat time if completed.
Keep in mind that for all I know, there has already been extensive effort spent trying to make this work.

Edit: Here is another possibility. The basic idea is something that has been discussed before, but making the R from a Herschel means that the LWSS exits in a favorable direction for minimizing repeat time. (I haven't cleaned it up yet.)

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 44, rule = B3/S23
14bo4b2o$13bobo2bo2bo$14bo2bo2bo$17bo$21bo$21b2o$16bo$16bo7bo7bo$17bo3bo$17b2o6bo2bo$19b3ob2o4bo$24bo9b2o$20b2o9bo$26bo4b2ob3o$27bo2bo6b2o$34bo3bo$23bo7bo7bo$39bo$33b2o$34bo$38bo$35bo2bo2bo$34bo2bo2bobo$35b2o4bo2$2b2o$3bo$3o$o13$16bo$15b3o$15bob2o!
The main problem with finding a stable catalyst the fact that the object previously throws off a couple of sparks in the direction that the catalysis would likely happen from. There are examples of catalysts that are modified before the catalysis by a spark then changed back during the catalysis, such as the hook with tail in PF*39C, but I doubt that most search programs are designed for catalysts of this type.

Another edit: Can anyone complete this?

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 11, rule = LifeHistory
2.2A19.2D$3.A20.2D$3A21.D$A5$17.3C$18.C$16.3C!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Heh, funny name, like BFx1H. It would be nice to see a version with better output clearance, but still a nice find!

Unfortunately, it is not possible using conventional methods to specifically search for a particular type of output or to specifically search for outputs with good clearance. That was my motivation behind this idea.

The chaos is going in the right direction, but there isn't much room to perturb it, so I'm not sure how useful this partial will be, which is why I typed that it might be promising.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Well, it is more like a problematic H-to-(B+H), but it can be fixed into a recovery 211 or 230 conduit somehow...

MathAndCode, what have you done here? This is a stable H->2H. Nice work.
It's actually EvinZL's modification of an Fx119, although that may not have been obvious because I forgot to quote myself in an earlier post, so I have fixed that in order to prevent future confusion. I was merely trying to clean it up.

Edit: Is there any way to extract this internal glider?

That, I believe, would be a NE-3T9. Could somebody check this against the current H-to-G collection?

(Also, it looks pretty safely impossible, at least for any reasonable definition of "extract".)

Can Fx158 be made less non-Spartan by using a glider eater that leaves an object that annihilates the output Herschel's first glider (like the following example except that the glider-beehive collision should create nothing instead of a block)?

It is connectable and therefore not useless. The repeat time is 244, which is short enough for the Elementary Conduits Collection.

There may be another Herschel-making conduit that allows the boojum to be placed closer, which would decrease the repeat time.

Edit: Indeed, preceding the F76 with Fx77 allows for a repeat time of 228.
