Impressive! With that change, the Rx140 is actually Spartan (i.e., simple to construct with gliders) if it's followed by a dependent conduit. That means it should eventually come in handy in self-constructing Herschel circuitry.

Another rare feature is the forward-traveling output glider; only a few other conduits have a similar output. So, among other things, it will often be possible to get extra Herschel outputs for free, with reasonable recovery times, from Herschel circuits that contain an Rx140:

It's too bad that there isn't a simpler way to suppress the extra block early in the reaction. That final huge cleanup spark really slows down the repeat rate of the circuit (currently 260 ticks). Without that final block+R explosion it might be down around 120-150. There are much simpler ways to suppress the R, but then the block gets left behind.

I'll be very interested to re-run this Hersrch search with all the new conduits included. Every time Hersrch gets another option to choose from, there's a more-than-proportional increase in the likelihood that a really compact solution will show up.

In this case, I'll be hoping for a circuit with just one immediate right-angle turn in it, and maybe just three or four conduits total. In my book, extra "trombone-slide" turns just mean that something better is out there waiting to be discovered. This last one is getting close, but not close enough -- the circuit still turns the wrong way briefly, then turns back again.

I guess my thinking is, you can _always_ get something to line up eventually if you allow unlimited time and 180-degree wiggles in the circuit -- so that must be cheating...!

Since Dave has already offered prizes for compact reflectors, I think I'll offer prizes for fast ones. Specifically, I am offering $50 for the first 90-degree stable reflector with a minimum repeat time of 100 generations or less, and an additional $50 for the first 90-degree stable glider reflector with a minimum repeat time of 61 generations or less.

I've officially started the Hersrch update project now, by making the latest Hersrch ZIP archive available in

[Edit: there are newer versions now, with an increasing number of improvements -- for the latest beta, see the link in the first post, third paragraph of the Herschel update topic.]

The Hersrch update thread contains all the relevant information for each new conduit, one at a time. That includes the "U" and "V" RLE patterns that Hersrch needs to do its searches and display the results, the various statistics that need to be added to data.ini (the standard and/or Spartan versions), and a sample script or two that shows Hersrch successfully finding and using the new conduit.

This all adds up to quite a bit of work, so I'll be asking for volunteers to provide equivalent data for some of the new conduits. I'll review any contributions that show up in the forum thread, and roll them into the next incremental update. There will be quite a few of these -- probably a complete new Hersrch ZIP file for each additional conduit, at least at first.

I'm not getting my hopes up too far, but it will speed the project up a lot if I can recruit a few contributors and reviewers to keep up the momentum...!

Very nice! Of course the best outcome would be for someone to locate a pattern that wins all four $50 prizes at once (just for the record, my prizes are for a 90-degree stable reflector inside a 50x50 bounding box, doubled if it's a 35x35 bounding box). But it's pretty clear that that will require a search program other than Hersrch!

Wow, there are some very nice new combinations here! It's a real improvement to have G2 and G4 transmitter conduits that produce their gliders and a usable output Herschel -- whenever one of those conduits shows up in the right place in a Herschel track, you get an optional extra Herschel for free.

I'm making some progress on updating Hersrch. There's a new baseline build --

-- that finally fixes a number of minor old issues, and supports Spartan searches a little better. I added one new conduit successfully (I think) -- an old Fx177p6 that somehow got missed in the original search of the literature. Things should go a little quicker from here. If anyone has trouble getting an incremental new version of Hersrch to run, of course, please let me know! I'm not actually making any more changes to Hersrch's code at this point, just adding to the data files and conduit definitions.

'll be adding conduits to Hersrch in rough speed and size order, with higher priority for the Spartan ones. I think this latest batch will probably end up at fairly low priority, since they're fairly large and also unusually slow to recover. Many of these new conduits take at least 274 ticks to recover, and some are up at 319 or 325 ticks... so there are actually quite a few known conduits incorporating 180-degree stable reflectors for cleanup, that are quicker to recover than these -- and possibly even a bit smaller in some cases -- but they're not in Hersrch's database yet either.

Very nice -- R126 plus H-to-G #3. Too bad about that tub-with-tail... but that's just my constructibility obsession showing up again.

It's nice, as in some other recent transmitters, the two output gliders have enough delay between them to allow both a standard receiver and its mirror image to work.

I thought of a way to replace the tub-with-tail with a block plus an extra glider from somewhere, and so make it Spartan, but it's incredibly silly in this case:

I did clear up the large p6 oscillator in my p6 conduit, but I have not been able to substitute a stable construction for the unix. The only ways that I can think of to replace the unix would be to use a non-standard eater, or to construct a "destroy-then-recreate" reaction, which I am not particularly good at. But at least it's progress!

Looks like the timing on this conduit is actually 246 ticks, not 325 -- am I missing something obvious here?

It will show up as "R246" in the next incremental Hersrch update. Compression is 279 ticks.
