18-bit SL Syntheses (100% Complete!)

This is the second spinoff thread from the main Synthesizing Oscillators thread, intended for solving 18-bitters.

Nope.
As a general rule of thumb, the SLs are sorted by size. (Please preface any references to stamp numberings with a # sign, like with the 17-bitters thread, so as to make searching for any particular object relatively easy.)

This took 153 days, 19 hours, and 12 minutes.

Yikes, that's impressive! Lots of new constructions in the SL18-v3 collection. Also I had gotten the wrong impression from the 2a pattern file, where the index pattern includes lots of objects for which constructions are already known. Anyway, there are just 149 objects left, not counting #719.

A quick survey of the 149 has confirmed that I have very few ideas for how to tackle a construction for any of these. So I'll write my suggested forlorn-hope search script instead. It seems unlikely that very many of these remaining 18-bitters will show up as ash from a random soup, but apgsearch's progress files are very nicely organized so it will be really easy to check.

More eventually, if there are any lucky finds --

Thanks for putting this together. Only a few unsolved 18-bitters -- #102 and #103 -- have shown up in my soup searches so far, but other people may have different results. On any computer that has been running a recent beta of apgsearch, it should be possible to run the script posted here and get a report of any unsolved 18-bitters that have showed up in the saved progress reports.

Finding the actual soup that generated the interesting 18-bitter is likely to require re-running the same search again on a hacked version of apgsearch, v0.42. I'm thinking of adjusting v0.42 to write all the soup numbers for rare objects to a third section of the progress file, as well as to the HTML census report (since the census HTML gets overwritten by the next search). Any comments or suggestions?

On the right-hand side, I haven't looked to see how easy it is to put an R-pentomino and preblock in all those locations at the same time. But it seems pretty clear that there's lots of space to build two supporting sparks for the much cleaner reaction on the left, anyway -- I don't know how to do it, but I haven't even tried all the simple glider and *WSS collisions, let alone G+G and *WSS+G sparks.

Sounds good! Not every soup result produces a usable recipe, but they sure do improve the odds...

Thanks for posting the script. I found only one "interesting" 18-bit SL with it, and that was in the solved list. It is #292 and came out of quite a mess of different reactions. I'm sure it has no chance of beating the existing six glider synthesis.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

So does that mean you altered the script to search for your original list of 18-bit objects, or something along those lines?

There are lots of other objects that the script could be adapted to search for. For example, there are proportionally more 17-bit objects (and 16-bit and lower) showing up in searches, compared to 18-bit objects. So there will probably be a good number of improvements to known glider syntheses lurking out there in the soup.

Some of these are quite interesting-looking! Seems as if it may be possible to adjust and reduce a few of the bigger ones to get 18-bit objects.

I'm curious as to how many of these will turn out to be overlaps with high-bit-count objects from other people's searches, and how many of them are _really_ unlikely and may take a long time to show up in anyone else's search. [There's that apgsearch online-database feature request showing up again...]

EDIT: Updated the script to version 1.1 -- it now produces a report (sent to the clipboard) and a sorted stamp collection (drawn after clearing the current layer, so watch out for your unsaved edits as usual.) The stamp collection groups still lifes by number of bits, and includes all objects found down to 10 bits; the report currently only mentions 18-cell objects and bigger, but this is easy to change by adjusting minreportbitcount on line 59.

I'm thinking version 1.2 will keep the script running at the end, so that you can click on one of the still lifes to have its associated soup show up in a new layer. This will only work for progress files saved from version 0.44 or later, where the seed strings for rare objects are saved in the progress file.

The list of 18-bitters that are particularly interesting to find with apgsearch keeps getting shorter and shorter, meaning that it's less and less likely to be worthwhile to run my search script -- at least on my apgsearch folder, where the results have already been mostly checked over, and I'm only adding a few hundred million more soups now and then. With any luck I'll get a search running on a cluster later this year, and then maybe the odds will improve a bit.

Meanwhile, it's still a really quick File > Run Clipboard test for the remaining interesting 18-bitters, for anyone who has been running apgsearch for a while. So here's a last update on the 18-bit search script. Might as well move it over into the right thread, finally --

Of course it could also be adapted very easily to hunt for 19- and 20-bitters that have known conversions into 18-bitters, and so on, but the odds of a successful match start to drop very quickly as the number of bits goes up.

At some point it might be interesting to make the much longer list of all still lifes whose recipes don't yet match Dave Buckingham's criterion of one glider per bit... the one remaining 14-bitter that takes 15 gliders looks like a tempting target, at the very least.

Seems as if the Buckingham Rule might need some modification to make it reasonable for objects with higher bit counts, though! It may need some kind of higher-order polynomial term that starts to have a big effect above 15 bits or so.

From what I've seen, Buckingham's criterion seems to fit best for "natural" objects, like those that fall out of apgsearch. For those that don't, then yes, a higher-order polynomial would fit better. I've said before that I would like to run a statistics package on the 16-bit SLs, and now the 17-bit SLs, now that they're finished.
