EDIT: On reflection, this is the third oscillator in o0005-spark.lif of jslife. Apparently it was found by Noam Elkies on 16th June 1997, and the following excerpt confirms this:

As far as I know the octagon-stabilized p50 jam and p100
traffic circle have not yet been constructed with gliders
because it is hard to fit the syntheses of the fumarole
(or mold for p100) and octagon-II into such close quarters.
The new(?) p5 should make the synthesis more convenient
because its rotor is smaller, and on the side opposite to
the fumarole; for instance one can get it from an 18-cell
still-life with two simulatneous small sparks:

If single gliders can be substituted in for enough of the blinkers and blocks, there's at least a chance at a twelve-glider synthesis of the oscillator, but suppressing the junk is going to be a problem --

Well, spark + hive easily makes a large portion of the final active object - simple to do with 4G but someone with gencols could look for a way to do it in 3. The piece that gets added comes from something paperclippy. From there I found a 2G cleanup, giving a good chance of getting a final recipe under 10G.

There are 2 soups that produce an eater2 variant with the smallest bounding box.

It seems that the p3 oscillator xp3_6a889b8ozx33 has made a surge in occurrences; as of yesterday there was only one instance (two if you count the D4_x4 soup), but now there are 4 in the main census.

Huh, Impressive to see that an odd-high-bit-count still life occured (as opposed to what dvgrn expected)! So would that be "narrow clef with handle" (Freywa's nomenclature) or something like Long Aries betwist two blocks?
