Wow!

Trivial reductions:

Soup, containing such additional curiosities as a pair of short-lived c/3 engines from T=18-27 or so and a pair of instantaneous clocks at T=116:

Seems like it could be useful.

Here it is eating a block:

Not too useful but it's what I found.

Well, those pre-TLs make a pre-interchange, so there are a lot of options to check. Really I think there are only 87 that include the right population sequence, though.

Unfortunately the current version of the script can't separate different orientations of the pre-TLs -- we should probably rewrite it to use apgcodes or some other hash value that notices differences in orientations of subpatterns. But it looks like all of these have two pre-beehives for a predecessor, or else converges to the same evolutionary sequence too soon:

So the 2bo$2ob2o$2bo! ancestor of the TL is in the wrong orientation and gets mixed up with the completed pentadecathla.

The two-glider interchange and all of the above three-glider variants also fail to work for an additional reason. The two gliders would interfere with the pentadecathlon-making gliders. The following shows this and also the pre-TL wrong-orientation problem:

Code: Select all

```
x = 28, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
24bo$23bo$23b3o3$21b2o$2o18bobo$b2o19bo4bo$o4bo5b2o2b2o8b2o$5bobo2bobo
2bobo8b2o$5b2o5bo2bo3$2b3o$4bo$3bo!
```

... So ten gliders is minimal as far as I'm concerned, anyway!

I have a feeling you might be thinking of codeholic's

old post in this thread:

codeholic (on 2015-08-27) wrote:I bet it's going to be figure 8 on pentadecathlon, i. e. period 120.

Funnily enough, he also

correctly predicted that p24 would be the next to show up:

Actually, codeholic posted that synthesis on October 6, 2014, the day of the post you are quoting. I think you were accidentally on page 1.

Oops! This was very odd. I usually check my "view your posts" page, and open all changed pages on their last pages, but somehow, today, I opened all of them on their first pages. I had noticed the error on all the other topics, but not this one.

Also, this points out that my attribution notation for this synthesis was incorrect (and as a result, almost two dozen other related syntheses as well). Thanks for the correction!

It's most likely that /attribute can't find the discoverer because the haul in which it was discovered has already been auto-deleted - this is quite possible, as carybe was (up until a few hours ago) submitting hauls fast enough they get auto-deleted in less than 12 hours. This also means it is extremely likely the discoverer was carybe.
