Nice! This seems to have a bit in common with the tumbler. (I was trying to look up the soup on catagolue, but I keep getting a 500 server error).

They can be. I it might be possible to further reduce this by 1, if one an find a 3-glider synthesis of beehive and block, but none of the ones I know make them with that spacing.

This is probably the first time such a nice find got picked up by the GoL community before the discoverer themselves knew about it, but I would definitely give you that title. It came out of a search on your computer, and searches are how we find these sorts of things. The difference this time is that the Twitterbot revealed it to the rest of us instead of you personally, though I totally understand if it feels like getting a trophy by accident. :wink:

Well, we need to make up our mind as to whether "professor" is a non-systematic name for the whole object like "omnibus" or for just half the object (personally, I prefer the latter).

If one of the induction coils is called a professor, then the five isomers will be, in order, cis-mirrored professor, trans-mirrored professor, offset mirrored professor (or skew-professors, or shift-mirrored professor), trans-rotated professor, and cis-rotated professor.

Quick side note, not to distract from the professor discussion: all of these have, in fact, been known for a very long time; the only reason the one posted by Apple Bottom is special now is that it's the first time it's appeared from an apgsearch-verified soup, while none of these other stabilizations/combinations have (except probably the glider+shuttle reaction, but that isn't very notable anyways and was also likely known long before apgsearch).
Similar deal with the comment you made a while ago about a switch-engine pair actually being two puffers. That was known already, it's just the way they're paired that's important.

I'm with you - better to name an entire group of related objects than to pick one out and assign it a name while neglecting the others.

Is there a consensus re: "professor" as such, BTW? I think it's a decent name that fits in neatly with chemist, mathematician, ecologist and so on.

Hmm... I have been thinking about naming new things lately. I thought that this was the thoughts of most of us in the forum, but I am not sure if this still is today.

Naming new objects appearing on Catagolue seems to be judgement call...
It's interesting to some, while not too much on others, (which differs from object by object)
Some objects are actually named by one person arbitrarily (e.g. Omnibus) and
It seems hard to make a consensus with this everytime, both because of its frequency and attention gotten. (Sorry about the little rant I made at Lifewiki the other day...)

TL;DR: I don't have a clue whether naming new objects in Catagolue and in general is no-problemo or not.

Still, I think objects already with a name, at the very least, shouldn't be named again, unless there is a good reason to do so. (e.g. flying saucer on this page; I (and hopefully others) called it 25P3H1V0.2 for a long time and it would only cause confusion to rename it otherwise. blobfish too.)

Based on my proposals.

Honestly, referring to objects by their fairly hard to remember codenames is kind of annoying. Honestly, does it sound nice to say "a 22-5P4H1V1 synthesis of 28P10H1V0" out loud?


I understand it has been nameless before my parents even met, but it makes no sense for it to not have one after all this time.

On that topic, opinions on the name?
