megasized_68h (final population 6867/6870) by apgoucher in G1, a new megasized record:
How can that region from Iwona be synthesized? My best guess is adding a dot spark to a blinker predecessor.

Hot on the heels of the megasized_68h, here's a megasized_70h (final population 7086/7090) which also produces a fourteener:

Code: Select all

It's another natural burloaferimeter variant. Here is it shown alongside the version in the infobox on the LifeWiki page:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 26, rule = B3/S23
5bo$4bobo$3bobobo$3bo3bo$2obo2b2ob2o$2obo4bobo$4b4o2$4b2o$4b2o11b2ob2o

obo$2b2obo3bo$5bo2b4o$5bo6bo$6b5obo$11bo$8b3o$8bo!

Edit: Here's an overlaid version:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 10, rule = TripleB3S23
5.A$2.2FAFG$D2.G.G.A$2D.G3.G$2C.G2.2GFGA$2C.G4.A.G$4.4GFBD$9.D$4.2A2F
D$4.2AFB!
The two natural versions are more similar to each other than they are to the minimum-population version (evidenced by the relatively large number of blue and yellow cells compared to red and cyan cells or green and magenta cells), such as a section of the stator in the top-right that resembles an aircraft carrier. This suggests that this type of structure is more likely to form naturally than alternative stators.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Nice! There are 65 29-bit burloaferimiters, and this is one of the 35 without known syntheses.
The synthesis should be fairly easy, given how it forms. Here is an attempt that misses
the final step, although given the current state of Life engineering, it is likely to be possible:

About half of them (all of the ones where the top is closed, i.e. with a tub) can be built that way, from one base. Unfortunately, I only know a synthesis for one of the simplest ones with an open top (plus another where the bottom block is moved). It's possible that several others could be made from that, but I haven't had the time to research it. That would probably be a good use for an automatic tool, e.g. the way Catagolue automatically finds syntheses using its converter library.

True. But I think that you'd be worse off trying to synthesize an object based off of a soup that forms it at T=11.

It feels like that common blinker predecessor should require fewer than five gliders, even with the constraints. Here's a way to create it from the correct direction using a loaf and P spark, each of which only requires four gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
2o$3o3$b2o$o2bo$obo$bo!
However, it turns out to not fit. Still, I suspect that a suitable three- or four-glider synthesis exists.

The formation boils down to a blinker, a wing sequence, a common blinker predecessor, and a couple of perturbations.

Right. But it seems that they have to be packed so closely together that to my eyes, it seems to be just plain impossible outside of lifecompetes! Goldtiger997 might think differently though,

I've seen that sort of thing happen thousands of generations (I think) in at least once. If you want, I can try to find the link.

Well, the xs15 is asymmetric. Sure, it showed up in a symmetric soup, but as far as I can tell, it might as well have been natural.
