After updating my program to use g.new(), Golly works normally, and I can start a new file or quit without issues... but it still keeps things in memory (possibly at a lower rate per minute, though). I noticed it after 1 GB, wasn't sure if that was causing it, and after the second GB, I restarted my computer and got it back. No issues starting up my computer, but that's probably because of the way my computer works when handling 2 GB of excess data vs. almost out of memory, not anything to do with Golly.

However, I did get these two partials.

The first is p20, which is a good number for multiple periods of sparkers, but the sparkers keep getting destroyed. Even the skewed 55P10 doesn't work. As it contains pi heptominoes as output, it can likely be made into a gun if something is found, although maybe not at p20 without very fast repeat time components.

Code: Select all

x = 48, y = 33, rule = B3/S23

This is an interesting p72 reaction, but unfortunately, it can likely only be supported by glider streams. In fact, if there wasn't a typo in my program, it would have triggered the "debris hits sparker" check and not have found it all.

It can also work at any period above 72—although that doesn't look like it will make inserting the spark much easier.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Ah, interesting -- I had missed that detail, that sparking the stable boats works the same way as sparking the pre-boats:

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 23, rule = LifeHistory
7.2B25.BABA$6.4B24.B2AB$5.6B23.2BA2B$4.9B2.B9.2B.2B3.7B$5.15B4.7B.5B

30B$ABA6B3.4B.B2.14B$.2A5B4.4B4.15B$7B6.2B9.B2.9B$.2BA2B23.6B$2.B2AB
24.4B$2.ABAB25.2B!
I can't imagine why this would be a useful oscillator to build, unless the big diamond-shaped sparky areas to the NW and SE turn out to be really useful for something, (and really expensive to build any other way). But anyway it's a nice recovery discovery.

It's a pity the two rotors don't actually touch; if they did, at least you would have one P34 rotor. A two-rotor P34 can be done much more simply by replacing one of the Honey Thieves' eaters by a Test Tube Baby.

It turns out that my C2 symmetry sparker program doesn't use memory (after the fix) as I said before. Here are five more partials.

Two of "bad period":

Why is the only perfectly clean one period 53?

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

3o$19bo!
And three with Herschels, where I'm not that good with conduits:

P124. The starting position is two R-pentominoes, after the pi heptominoes hit the blocks. Using Merzenich's p31 as a sparker could work; it gets destroyed, but late enough that it could be saved with the correct debris suppressors. Also note the two Herschel outputs; this could be a gun.

P144. The B's block needs to be destroyed or suppressed, but the FNG hitting the active region in the center is essential or it doesn't work.

P57. This one looks the most promising of the five; all that is needed is to suppress or destroy the B's block, and we have a p57, likely a p57 gun. (Also a smaller p3 domino sparker if possible.)

The standard H-to-B, Conduit 1, would fit there, but the p3 sparker is slightly too obtrusive. A smaller JLS result to replace it would seal the deal on a smaller p57 gun.

We can suppress the problem spark in conduit 1 with a single glider, allowing the construction of a relatively compact p57 gun:

There may be a way to fit it in a smaller bounding box by reflecting the glider streams differently. I just picked the first thing that worked, which happened to be compact. Further discussion belongs in the gun discussion thread.

I tried to find a p2 cheater that worked with honey thieves using JLS a while back. I think the search was fairly thorough, and any such cheater would need a complex interaction with several p34 cells. However, I didn't consider looking for a p2 cheater that worked with other oscillators. For example, this gives a new non-trivial p26 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

Here are two flipper partials:

Period 270, mod 135. Delete the block and loaf on each side while making sure the sparkers survive. You might need a sparker that eats the gliders, as there's very little space to have them avoid the gliders entirely.

Period 60, mod 30. No junk here, but there needs to be a single sparker that sends its sparks in two different places.

Getting the spark in looks pretty infeasible even without the fact that the sparker must deliver the same spark in two different locations. For one thing, the sparker must start interacting with the R-sequence during the previous generation.

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

3bo$2bo3bo3bo2bo3bo5bo$6bo3bob2o2b2o3bo$6bo6bo3bob2o2bo$11bobo4bo$4bo
bo4b2o$5bo!
That isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but the spark necessary in order to produce a domino spark in the next generation cannot be edgeshot from beyond that column in the previous generation, and the R-sequence is at that column for several generations before the spark must be delivered. It's at least theoretically possible to get the spark in, but all of the mechanisms that I have found are hopelessly impractical.

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

I decided to try C4 symmetry. I have six partials, but nothing completed.

Non-flippers:
P20, no junk. However, the spark cannot be there at generations 4 or 10, so the domino sparker itself needs to be period 20.

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = B3/S23

6bo2bo$obo3b2o2bob2o$3b2o7bo$4b3o4b2o$6b2obobo$10bo2$9b2o!
P54. The sparker has to both provide the dot spark and delete the junk. The initial state is four fleet predecessors.

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 33, rule = B3/S23

Flippers:

P36, mod 18. No junk; just need a good sparker.

P132, mod 66. Another tricky sparker, but at least this time, it's a domino spark and not two dots separated by one empty space.

P48, mod 24. We need a sparker that both provides the dot spark and deletes the beehive.

Not a partial, and it's even a sparker! However, at p10, it might already be known, especially since I found it by hand. The dot spark seems pretty inaccessible with the current heavyweight volcanoes, but there are probably narrower ones that give space to the p10 dot spark.

It doesn't appear in jslife or the osc supplement collection. I also tried searching this thread for "p10" and couldn't find it.

I suspect in just about any situation this would be useful it could be replaced by the skewed variant of 55P10. Here are the best p5 supports I know of:

It turns out that my programs had a bug in them all this time. I don't think I'm going to redo them, since it will take so much time. Specifically, for a line of three, it put sparks in the wrong place for two of them (one of them if you consider how it's shifted), making one set of domino sparks not checked. The red ones below were the incorrect ones in my program.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 86, rule = LifeHistory
E9.E$2.A9.A$2.A9.A$2.A9.A8$E.A7.E.A$2.A9.A$2.A9.A8$2.A9.A$E.A7.E.A$2.

D.A$2.A9.A$2.A9.A7$E$E.A7.D.A$2.A7.D.A$2.A9.A8$2.A9.A$2.A9.A$E.A7.E.A
$E9.E7$2.A9.A$2.A9.A$2.A9.A$E9.E$E9.E!

Here's my next set of partials:

This really, really close p120. A p4, p5, or p6 sparker will work, but it needs to avoid getting hit about 30 generations later. It seems doable.

Code: Select all

x = 46, y = 46, rule = B3/S23

2$20bo2b2o$23bobo$26bo$22bo2bo$22b3o2$22b2o!
Another one that can be done at multiple periods. Flips in 75+ with the loaves, but 74 also works by hitting it one generation early; period is twice that or can be mixed and matched if more than one solution is found. The issue is that if the sparks only hit it once, it will create (other) loaves; the sparker needs to also delete the unwanted loaves.

Code: Select all
