I realized while messing around with it that the LOM-producing Bandersnatch has a really cool and exciting property! Unfortunately* I've only been able to get a p143 oscillator from it:

It can convert a block to an escaping glider at p143. If only we could somehow supply it with blocks using another copy of the mechanism?

Well, then you're using JLS wrong! :mrgreen: I prefer to constrain the width of the rotor, rather than the width of the entire oscillator. I also include a buffer consisting of two layers of orthogonally-connected P1 cells, followed by a layer of orthogonally-connected P1 unchecked cells; any cells beyond these can be left unset. This ensures that a bushing exists in the vast majority of cases. Even if there are errors in the bushing or inner casing of a given solution, they may still be fixable by clearing a good-sized area of stator around the errors, and then running the search again to find a replacement stator. Of course, once the bushing has been found, finding some casing that works is a simple matter of another wider search of just P1 cells.

When Dave Buckingham found Extremely Impressive, he considered it a billiard table "whose side fell apart, but repaired itself". Yes, it's not a true billiard table, but it's close enough to one to be related.

The pulsar spark is very similar to the Caterer and Jam sparks, so there are many situations where they can be used interchangeably; however, they are slightly different so there are some cases (like the one JP21 showed) where their behaviors differ.

After rediscovering this P6, I can't help but wonder if there's a symmetric stator for this, but how would I search for one? JLS would make the entire oscillator symmetric, not just the stator.

Would a periodic stabilization work?
Got these oscillator combinations from dr. Didn't see these combinations in jslife, but I saw other combinations, meaning that they might actually be new.

Yes. jslife only includes the minimal agar stabilizations to save space.

Technically, that isn't quite extremely impressive, although it is closely related. The term "billiard table" has always been loosely defined, and there have been disagreements over such classifications before. For example, Page 3 of Lifeline Volume 3 includes the following comment:

I don't know whether this is a known rotor off-hand. I assume you are using the knownrotors file that I provided here. When a new rotor is discovered, it will typically be labeled "UNKNOWN" in the output. In some cases, a new oscillator will have a split rotor and be labeled "unknown: split rotor". When you find new rotors, you should post their rotor descriptors in this thread (see for example this post). For periods less than about 6 you should wait until you have a bunch of new rotors and then post them all at once.

Nobody really keeps track of period-3 oscillators. They could be new if they are marked "UNKNOWN" by dr, but they might not be considered interesting. I personally never bother to construct an oscillator from dr with period below 5, and only rarely for periods 5 and 6.

Not true. It's just that the loudest voices don't care about them, so people get shouted at when they are posted.

Although I do agree that posting isolated lower period oscillators is bad form and a bit annoying, and it would be better to collect up a bunch of them and post that. Especially if the rotors are new.

But how to determine if the rotors are new? Is there a way to search on-line for oscillators by the Hickerson rotor code? That would be the place to send the "is this a new rotor" posters. I've set up my object database to support that, and it does help when trying to determine if a rotor has been seen before.

It can be confusing when dr says something like new 6.2.3 or whatever. I always seem to fall for it and think it's actually new, but in some cases, the rotor was literally half of an Achim's P4.

Why is lightbulb considered a billiard table? I can easily draw a path from a rotor cell to a cell outside its bounding box, indicating that the rotor isn't 100% enclosed by the stator.

I thought dr said not to change some of the cells you changed. I'm confused.
