EDIT: The rotor splits at around row 14, maybe keeping it split would yield a completion? The fallback isn't very good though. :P

Well that's pretty good clearance to me.
I think you can make another search with a p1 center (or an empty center to make it split) and widen the rotor sideways to have more search space.

Partial result for a p40 I-heptomino hassler:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 19, rule = LifeHistory
5.2C$5.2C2$12.A$11.A.A$2A8.A3.A$2A8.A2.A$10.2A5$17.2C$17.2C4$12.2A$
12.2A!\
The reaction is somewhat picky about the blocks (or whatever would replace them).

That could also be a nice I-conduit if the blocks could be replaced by a permanent catalyst.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Unfortunately, that dot spark looks very difficult to insert without hitting the fishhook or block beforehand.

(EDIT) I believe the block restoration reaction this support accomplishes is the exact same one, or at least quite similar to the one, used to stabilize the p80 pi shuttle, but since this engine is dependent on the partial block deletion happening at p40 I don't think the two can't be used to stabilize each other.

P11 using two copies of Kazyan's new beehive-push catalyst to hassle a beehive into a pre-TL and back again:

Either I missed something, or there are no P7 heavyweight emulators at w14 even. Anyone want to try and extend this at a higher width? w16 is probably too wide to be practical, but I don't know. Maybe a Sokwe fancy branching solution would work.

Wow; that's from quite a while back. Thank you for remembering it. Also, keep in mind that a p7 lightweight emulator would probably be able to support my reaction.

Branching searches are probably more art than science. I only really perform such searches when I'm trying to find something for a very specific purpose (e.g., the p28 gun or the c/5 greystretcher corner). They are also easier to do with WLS than JLS, since WLS allows you to back up through the search tree and skip non-viable parts of the search space.

The way I do it, I set up the search essentially as normal, but I change two things. First, I cut a small hole in the 2-row stator buffer using don't-care cells where I want a potential branch to be. Second, I reduce the rotor width behind the hole so that any results that get very far will be thin after the branch point and hopefully easier to solve. So if I'm starting from just a spark, my setup might look something like this:
setup.png
setup.png (22.96 KiB) Viewed 83675 times
So I ran this, and to my surprise it found this partial result pretty quickly:
partial-with-branch.png
partial-with-branch.png (25.4 KiB) Viewed 83675 times
Notice that the symmetric rotor becomes hebdarole, so we're already done with the central branch. I then save the state of the search so I can experiment with the incomplete asymmetric branch. After saving the search, I copy the current state, transpose it, and remove the cells around the branch point to setup the search. The setup might look like this:
branch-setup.png
branch-setup.png (34.56 KiB) Viewed 83675 times
Unfortunately, this doesn't find anything. In fact, I couldn't find any viable-looking partial results for this branch with a rotor width up to 7. Even if I had found something, it would have had terrible clearance. So at this point I would reload the partial result that I saved earlier and use the backup feature to back the search up to the point where the branching occurred. I can then continue the search to get new partial results.

In your case, you already have some high-clearance partial results. You might want to start with a long partial result so that you can branch much farther away from the spark.

I have attached a zip file with the .wdf files (WLS saved states) for the search states in the images shown above.

Edit: I noticed an interesting observation in a jslife sparker:

Code: Select all

x = 49, y = 14, rule = LifeHistory

Shall we name it big mold?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Eh, sure, but it doesn't provide any of mold's sparks that make it useful, and "big mold" is probably too general of a term to apply to what appears to be a terrible-clearance thumb sparker.
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring

Here's the shallowest (according to JLS) Heavyweight Volcano (with the first two rows clear):

Code: Select all

x = 38, y = 32, rule = B3/S23

This is the first I could find; There might be a narrower one (width less than 38)
Top has better clearance; Bottom has 1 fewer cell.

Haha I think the sparker is optimized for leftwards clearance. I am not sure if it was searched out of necessity though.

Isn't that just a domino sparker?
