Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Should I move rule 120 to rule 106, as they are equivalent and the convection is that the lowest number is the canonical form?

Personally I'd rather you didn't. That page was just recently moved from another pagename, and LifeWiki doesn't really need yet another move war.
Can you be a bit more precise about the kind of equivalence? What is "convection" and where one can read more about that?Haycat2009 wrote: ↑January 31st, 2024, 7:59 pm[...], as they are equivalent and the convection is that the lowest number is the canonical form?

The two rules are equivalent except replace "right" with "left".

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Can you support your idea of "rule 106" being a better pagename than "rule 120" (or "rule 225" for that matter), by providing a direct link to a previous discussion, with an observable consensus for that?
In other words, why it should necessarily be "the lowest number"? Why not "highest number"? Why not "the name most commonly used in actual discussions"? Why not anything else? Was that previously discussed anywhere, or it's just your idea you're trying to push as a "convection"?

OCA:Diamoeba is not a self-complementary rule (it has no B4 or S4) but it is in Category:Self-complementary_rules.
(still in there after purging Category:Self-complementary_rules)
EDIT by dvgrn: Removed the category. The no-still-lifes proof was correct but much more convoluted than necessary, so I wrote a new one and hopefully explained the logic a little more clearly. Quite likely there's something even simpler.

That category was incorrectly added in the edit https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=140862 which also added a hard-to-read attempt at proving lack of still lives. There are several possibilities how Someone Else could improve display in those cases. But the simplest way is to ignore existence of these links (i.e. do nothing). They're harmless in most cases, and they often give ideas for new articles.

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
For wiki citations of edited posts: should we cite the date when the post was last updated (or when the last relevant update took place)? It looks like the current scheme cites posts using the original upload date, but that might cause confusion to the reader in some cases.
Take https://conwaylife.com/wiki/P76_pi-heptomino_shuttle as an example. The references table is listed below:
It could be argued that this causes even more confusion, as the date of the original post (the date that is immediately seen by the user on clicking the link) would not be equal to the date listed in the citation. But I think that is probably a common practice to include the last updated date (see https://www.google.com/search?q=do+you+cite+original+publishing+date+or+updated+date, but I'm not sure if more research is required for this argument). And maybe it would help if a feature can be turned on in the forums to include the last updated date at the top of the post, instead of only at the bottom of the post.
Maybe this problem is big enough that it deserves its own thread (it also impacts lots of other pages, particularly those involving oscillators discovered in the last few years), but I think I'll probably leave it to the moderators for whether this post should be moved or not.
Take https://conwaylife.com/wiki/P76_pi-heptomino_shuttle as an example. The references table is listed below:
This pattern is discovered on September 24, 2023, but it cites a post by Chris857 that was posted on September 17, one week before the discovery. This could create a confusion for the user (for thinking that the pattern was synthesized before it was discovered!) before they click on the link and find out that the post was updated on September 25 for the synthesis. So would it be a good suggestion to list the date of last relevant update, instead of (or in addition to) the original posting date, in the references?1. Carson Cheng (September 24, 2023). Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
I think the question might deserve its own thread. I'm not sure if it is possible to consistently cite the date of the last relevant update. The convention to cite the date of the post indeed can be confusing. However, at least the date of the post is always shown, and it remains visible and unchanged when further edits are made to the same post. (So a LifeWiki reader could still verify/check later that the date given on the wiki matches the date of the post.)carsoncheng wrote: ↑February 4th, 2024, 10:58 am[...] And maybe it would help if a feature can be turned on in the forums to include the last updated date at the top of the post, instead of only at the bottom of the post.

Unfortunately, when the post was edited before a new post was added in the same thread, the "last edited" time is not displayed at all. That means in some cases it is impossible to determine when an edit was made. I wonder if that could be changed to always show last-edited date (even for the last post in a thread).
Further, unless the poster adds the correct current date manually in an edit, dates of intermediate edits are not visible, as soon as a newer edit is made to the same post.
(I remember there was an old post which was updated multiple times over several months, before a new post was made in the same thread. So the last edited date was not shown. And even if it would be shown, it would be just date of the most recent edit.)

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
The code block you posted contains several unrelated changes whose correctness is not obvious, and you did not explain those changes. In addition, there is an unrelated pattern which should not go in the ruletable file.b-engine wrote: ↑February 5th, 2024, 1:46 amThe Rule:Evoloop has no customized colors so that it's very hard to distinguish between states. [...]
Please post a version of the existing ruletable with minimal changes which are needed (adding colours?) and without a pattern prepended.
Alternatively, describe all changes in the new version.

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Actually this ruletable is copied from Golly rulefiles. However, I doesn't know anything about modifying ruletables.confocaloid wrote: ↑February 5th, 2024, 2:23 amPlease post a version of the existing ruletable with minimal changes which are needed (adding colours?) and without a pattern prepended.

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Does this proof work for any rule missing all of S01234?
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Sure looks like it to me, but I'm not particularly good at proofs. Someone should double check it.
Still, if an ON cell needs five sustaining neighbors, the "left-most cell in the top row" can't survive without at least one cell above or to the left of it, so it seems clear at best any hypothetical still life can't be finite -- it will have to extend infinitely to the left and right.
