Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits

Post by Chris857 » March 18th, 2024, 11:13 pm

I just messed up when I moved RLE:P21honeyfarmhassler3 to https://conwaylife.com/wiki/RLE:P14honeyfarmhassler (the "p21" was a p14). But I didn't realize that RLE:P14honeyfarmhassler already exists (along with "2", "3", and "hasslers"), but aren't used in https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Period-14_h ... m_hasslers. So could someone fix some history, but also maybe use the existing RLEs?

I also wanted to add https://discord.com/channels/3579222555 ... 8434601131 to the list of p14 HF hasslers.

The added note is incorrect and confusing. Emus are not relevant in this context.

Being a dependent conduit has nothing to do with existence of additional outputs. See Lx200 for an example of a dependent conduit that has an additional glider output.
Further, many dependent conduits based on the transparent block reaction have the SW10T108 glider output (described relative to the place where the input Herschel would appear if the transparent block was removed).

The following pattern is an example of a closed Herschel track composed of four dependent conduits (2 x Lx200 + 2 x Rx262), with one Herschel placed on the track to turn it into a p924 glider gun.

The following true period 308 glider gun is made by placing three Herschels on the same track, capping three out of four barrels, and replacing boat-bits with glider eaters:

In 68P16, the hassled reaction consists (at some point) of four blocks and four wings. It never consists of "wings and nothing else". So this oscillator is not a wing hassler, and should not be added to the page.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=128685
The template should go after the External links section, not before.

(1) Cleanup/copyedit needed ("infinitely extended" --> "arbitrarily extended"; remove space before footnote; remove space in refname)
(2) Keep in mind that the article is about a specific induction coil (and not about all various things that are somehow similar to it, or various things that involve parts that are somehow similar to it). I doubt the added pattern belongs to that specific article.

When looking through honey-farm-hasslers.rle in the Golly pattern collection, I noticed that many of them aren't on the honey farm hasslers or honey farm shuttles wiki pages. Here are the patterns that seem like they should be added:

Can someone please add these?

Unfortunately, I don't have the discovery credits for these. However, I do have a few helpful notes:
  • The p16 is a "reduction" of a pattern on the wiki page. The pattern on the wiki page is incorrectly attributed to P1GG in 2023, when it was actually first found by James Pascua in 2022.
  • The second p24 is a "larger" form of a pattern on the wiki page. The pattern on the wiki page is a monomerized form, but it consumes a blinker from a blinker factory, so it perhaps shouldn't be considered a proper hassler. The second p24 above doesn't have this "problem".
  • The p27 is just the capped p27 gun. The wiki page contains a version of this gun, but it involves a mutual stabilization with 56P27, so it perhaps shouldn't be considered a proper hassler. The p27 above doesn't have this "problem".
  • The p37 is just the capped p37 gun. For some reason it isn't included on the honey farm hasslers page.
  • The p46 is closely related to a p46 on the wiki page. It could potentially be considered a reduction, rather than a separate hassler.
  • The p11, p48, p54, and the first p30 are reductions of patterns already on the wiki page.
  • The p22, p40, third p24, and second p32 are shuttles and should go on the honey farm shuttles wiki page.
Something similar probably needs to be done for traffic light hasslers.

Edit: there should be a page for pre-pulsar hasslers that aren't shuttles, such as David Buckingham's p55.

I'll update the honey farm hasslers now. I'm just saying this so nobody tries to do it at the same time and have twice as much work.

EDIT: Complete.

Continuation of an earlier story with attempts to add unsubstantiated/vague claims.
  • "and has a known glider synthesis" -- where can a reader find a completed glider synthesis for the shown period-27 glider gun? Separate syntheses for smaller components don't count; you need to construct the whole thing. Either there should be a forum ref for the claim, or the claim should be reverted.
  • "why the main form is still considered better" -- how so? Better in what context? Claims "this form is better" without clarifying the intended meaning and context of "better" should not go in LifeWiki articles. The claim in the current form should be reverted.

The edit adds a claim "[...], and a much more difficult glider synthesis". That claim is incorrect, as the pattern does not have any known glider synthesis. In particular, xp3_gg39c842s0gzh895tl2w11zd54311tdrh84z36ar3g8oziij123z04b4 does not have any known glider synthesis.

Somehow stumbled upon dani's userpage with the archived source for the catglue bot and then tried to take the link for testitemqlstudop's gitlab fork, but the link is broken - and it looks like it's a formatting goof or even a bug in mediawiki that's to blame.

The href on the rendered page is

Code: Select all

https://gitlab.com/testitem/catgluebot%7Ca
which doesn't work.

Clicking the view source tab to remove the wiki markup shows the href was intended to be

Code: Select all

https://gitlab.com/testitem/catgluebot
which when I paste it in, redirects to

Code: Select all

https://gitlab.com/terezi/catgluebot
Should be fixed so people don't have to know that there is an unformatted tab and then go to the length of copypasting the link out of the source... not a terribly high-priority edit, but I still think it ought to be fixed at some point.

External wiki-link markup doesn't have "vertical bar" character (Help:Links). I believe it should be instead

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=147683
(1) The linked edit replaced a previously added p6 with a new p5, instead of adding a new section.
(2) The added p5 doesn't belong on the page, because removing the butterflies causes the rest to disintegrate.
Suggested fix: undo.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=147683 embedded viewer with caption "4 Silver's p5 hassling 4 butterflies. (citation needed)"
https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=125076 embedded viewer with caption "Eight Silver's p5s hassling four tubs"
The following oscillator is described twice, differently (and incorrectly) in the forms "N Silver's p5 hassling M X":

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
5b2o11b2o$5bobo9bobo$10b2ob2o$8b2obobob2o$7b2o7b2o$2o21b2o$o23bo$bo2b
o5bo3bo5bo2bo$3b2o4b2o3b2o4b2o$3bo4bobo3bobo4bo$2bo4b3o5b3o4bo$2b2o17b
2o2$2b2o17b2o$2bo4b3o5b3o4bo$3bo4bobo3bobo4bo$3b2o4b2o3b2o4b2o$bo2bo5b
o3bo5bo2bo$o23bo$2o21b2o$7b2o7b2o$8b2obobob2o$10b2ob2o$5bobo9bobo$5b2o
11b2o!
Those descriptions are incorrect, because
(a) trying to remove all M instances of X (i.e. what is claimed to be the "hassled" part) causes the rest to disintegrate, hence the oscillator is not "something hassling some X",
(b) there are no complete-by-itself parts that are variants of the Silver's p5 oscillator, hence the oscillator is not "some Silver's p5 hassling something".

Suggested fix: undo for the first linked edit (page Butterfly hasslers); clarify relevance for second edit (page Silver's p5).

Question for hassler-builders and other terminology experts: is there more or less of a consensus that to be a "hassler" of Object X, a pattern has to have hassling objects that can survive if all the instances of Object X are removed?

That certainly seems like it matches an awful lot of existing usage of "hassler". But the Hassle article doesn't actually call that out. Should it?

If so, then what's a good verb to use for what the Silver's p5s are doing with the butterflies, in the eightfold-symmetric oscillator that's currently labeled "Eight Silver's p5s hassling four tubs"? "Mutually stabilizing" or something along those lines, maybe?

-- The "tubs" part of that caption doesn't seem right, for sure -- it's actually "four tubs plus a set of sparks that aren't normally part of either a tub or a Silver's p5".

It does seem okay to call the non-butterfly objects around the outside "eight Silver's p5s". They're being mutually stabilized by the central four-butterfly engine instead of being stabilized by a snake or eater or some other non-oscillating catalyst. But they're still Silver's p5s, in the same sense that we've had in the "Four Silver's p5s rephasing beacon" caption for a good while now without anyone complaining.

Well, if a RLE code contains a ruletable/tree, then it doesn't needed to upload to LifeWiki unless otherwise cited.
Also, just delete those LifeWiki page. Nothing else needed to done.

Posting rules to the conwaylife.com forums implies that they're available for public use, especially if those posts don't contain any labeling that says they're "just for test purposes".

Should the posts where these rules originated, e.g., this post introducing "0E0PLife", also be deleted from the public forums to avoid confusion?

Ian07 recently did a scan of forum postings and uploaded rules that had been created since the last such scan. Nobody has ever objected to this kind of thing before. We need to be able to do this kind of scan without second-guessing each individual rule -- so at the very least, future "test" rule posts would need to be very clearly labeled as such.

But really "no uploading rules unless allowed by the creator" isn't likely to become a workable criterion even then. This kind of thing is often done automatically or semi-automatically, via a scraper script.

Should a new category article be added for "2c/3 signal receiver"? I just put in a CurrentNews item for Entity Valkyrie's discovery, and wanted to have an article to link to -- but there doesn't seem to be one: "receiver" currently just redirects to "Herschel receiver". Details about the receiver end of 2c/3 signalling mechanisms are currently only found in Wire, I think.

My idea would be that a "2c/3 signal receiver" category article wouldn't need an infobox. Maybe it would have embedded viewers showing the old receiver from heisenburp.lua, and maybe some of the later improvements on that, and then Goldtiger997's sub-1000-tick-RT staged-recovery devices, and then Entity Valkyrie's latest model.

In one sense EV's new 2c/3 receiver needs the same number of signals (three) as its predecessor. But Goldtiger997's mechanism needed three gliders all precisely synchronized with each other to make the pondnblock bait. In Entity Valkyrie's solution, the pond factory and the TL+G combination producing the bi-block could theoretically be activated in either order -- so, not surprisingly, the circuitry ends up a lot less complicated.

I'm not sure whether I understand what you mean by a 'category article'. In MediaWiki context, categories are not articles, but instead a software feature that enables grouping related pages (including articles and non-article pages). Category pages can be created to supply description of a category and/or maintain a hierarchy of categories. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Categories/en

Since you wrote it wouldn't need an infobox, I take it the idea is to create an usual article about the topic "2c/3 signal receiver" (as opposed to a "pattern page" article about some specific pattern or specific reaction)?

I don't really see how you would need three signals somewhere in either of those patterns. As far as I can tell, any working 2c/3 receiver accepts just one signal at a time, arriving through the wire. The receiver passes this signal to some other place carried by some other mechanism (e.g. by a glider or by a Herschel), and can do so repeatedly without suffering damage, as long as enough time passes between consecutive received signals.

Difference between receiver mechanisms might be in the number of gliders, Herschels or other moving active objects which have to be generated to restore the bait(s) and/or in the relative timing restrictions between those moving active objects. The task of rebuilding bait objects / recovery is logically separate from the main task of carrying a signal through the circuit.

Um... we've been through this topic before, a truly impressive number of times. When I use the word "signal", I very often don't mean the same thing as what you mean when you use the word "signal". This is one of those cases.

Here you seem to be interpreting the term "signal" as if you think that I meant a bit-carrying information-theory signal -- even though I've tried to make it very clear that I don't believe that your restricted "confocaloid-signal" definition is the most useful way to define or use "signal" in the context of this kind of CA circuitry.

In Goldtiger997's 2c/3 signal receiver, there are three "dvgrn-signal" signals -- three distinct moving active objects -- created from the single initial output Herschel descendant, using the usual signal splitters and timing-adjustment devices... where I'm using "signal splitter" in the "fanout device" sense described in the splitter article, not the one-time circuitry sense.

Goldtiger997's circuitry has to precisely synchronize those three dvgrn-signals to produce the three-glider collision that rebuilds the pondnblock constellation.

All of this is still very common standard usage of the term "signal" here on the forums and elsewhere. Check out the second paragraph of the omniperiodicity paper, for example; I didn't write that paragraph or suggest that wording in any way.

At the moment, you're the only person who ever seems to object to the use of this "dvgrn-signal" meaning of "signal" here on the forums. I don't like the term "dvgrn-signal" any more than you like the term "confocaloid-signal", and normally I don't think it's necessary to use it to make my meaning clear.

So for the moment, unless there's some fresh evidence that I'm actually confusing a lot of people, I'm going to continue to say simply "signal" here on the forums when I mean "active object moving through circuitry". Please stop trying to exclusively apply your preferred meaning of "signal" to other people's usage of the term, when they're clearly invoking the wider "dvgrn-signal" sense.

I don't think so. In this particular case, the topic is "2c/3 signal receiver", which already uses the word 'signal' in its primary well-understood CA-related sense (i.e. information carried through the universe with some mechanism).

Considering that you are discussing the topic "2c/3 signal receiver", and there's just one signal (which is received) as long as you are focused on the receiving mechanism, it feels to me to be very confusing to apply the same word in the same discussion to mean a completely different thing.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but it's not a completely different thing at all.

A "2c/3 signal receiver" is certainly capable of receiving "signals" that match the restricted "confocaloid-signal" meaning.

However, the wider "dvgrn-signal" meaning is simply a commonly-used superset of your restricted meaning. When I say "signal", I generally mean any active object moving through circuitry, including but not limited to active objects that are carrying confocaloid-signals.

So 2c/3 signal receivers are equally capable of receiving "signals" that are dvgrn-signals but not confocaloid-signals -- and I definitely intend the "dvgrn-signal" sense when I say "2c/3 signal receiver".

If we hook up the output of Entity Vakyrie's receiver to a 2c/3 signal transmitter attached to the same length of 2c/3 wire, and put one dvgrn-signal in the loop, we end up with a simple oscillator.

You've repeatedly stated that you think that such loop oscillators don't contain any signals. I think that that idea simply doesn't match common usage or common community opinion. The use of "signal" in the omniperiodicity paper is an example of that common usage. And the fact that such an oscillator would contain a working "2c/3 signal receiver" and yet wouldn't contain any signals, seems like a serious point of potential confusion to me.

No it is not a superset.
I don't know what exactly you mean when you say "confocaloid-signal". What I do know, however, is that a signal by the well-known definition is (movement of) information through the Life universe. In particular, a signal is not an object. A moving object may exist without carrying any signal at all. When an object changes, the carried signal (if any exists) remains the same.

As an immediate consequence, "moving object" cannot be a superset of "signal". It is a completely different idea.

Would you please consider putting some more effort into understanding that point, then? It's been explained quite a number of times -- here, for example.

I would say it is a "strongly related idea", rather than a "completely different idea": the medium, and/or the message.

This sort of double usage is commonplace: text, speech, mail, etc. can refer to the medium (how it is sent) or to the message (the informational content). I don't see a real risk for confusion. Even Life Lexicon uses the term "signal converter" under the entry for "splitter," when strictly speaking it's only the medium that's changing, not the informational content.
