Should ConwayLife.com:About be protected?

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=140874
Mechanical copy&paste of a proof from another page; this is not a valid proof for this rule. (There is no contradiction that was claimed: 4 neighbours can be arranged.) Should be either removed or made into a valid proof.

Unrelated, multiple HTML linebreaks were added in the same edit - those linebreaks should be removed as they break the layout.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=140848
Mechanical copy&paste of a proof from another page; not a valid proof for this rule. (There is no claimed contradiction; the cell 'x' can be alive.) Should be corrected or reverted.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=138193
Mechanical copy&paste of a proof from another page; not a valid proof for this rule. (There is no claimed contradiction; the cell 'x' does not have to be dead.)

Other similar edits from the same user are also copy&paste with mechanical modifications, without any edit summaries, and incorrectly marked as "minor edits" despite being significant changes to content of the affected articles.

EDIT by dvgrn: At least at a first glance, it looks to me like these three proofs are all easy to patch up, basically with the same trick in each case: "Then the dead cell to the left of C will be born in the next generation, via B3 (if the cell 'x' is dead) or B4 (if the cell 'x' is alive)." I've asked Haycat2009 to take responsibility for repairing these incomplete proofs before making any further edits -- and to use edit summaries more consistently instead of just leaving them blank.

I think at least two out of those cases need some other idea, due to absence of a certain neighbour-counting condition in the rule definition.
Aha, yes, on a second glance, OCA:Lifeguard 2 requires the cell 'x' to be off, because if it were on, there would be a birth to the left of C. But that's a valid option, so there's no contradiction along the lines that the proof currently states. And OCA:Coral doesn't have B4 or B5 either, so that proof has a similar flaw.

I think that both of those cases would have to be patched up with a more complex argument showcasing a different contradiction. The northwest edge of the hypothetical still life seems like it has to continue southwest forever -- there can't be a left edge, and therefore it isn't a finite still life. I haven't formalized that thoroughly and could be wrong in one or both cases, though. Will leave it for Haycat2009 to either tackle the rewrites or just remove those proofs.

This revision to Fly corrected the Pentadecathlon ID reference of Edge-repair spaceship 1 from 25P3H1V0.1 to 26P3H1V0.1. However, the actual spaceship shown in the Info box is currently referred to as 25P3H1V0.2.

Fly.png (7.72 KiB) Viewed 3894 times
25P3H1V0.2.png

Edge-repair spaceship 1
Edge-repair spaceship 1
26P3H1V0.1.png (6.47 KiB) Viewed 3894 times
This reference seems to have been incorrect right from the beginning. Because these spaceships are all very similar, all have the edge repair nature and were all found around the same time, I suspect they've been confused and referred to incorrectly on other occasions. I've not got enough experience with history of the names to figure out what to change here.

Additionally, the pages for 25P3H1V0.2 and 26P3H1V0.1 don't note their ability to support the Fly tagalong.
And the pages for the two 25-bit spaceships don't note their edge repair capability.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

Should there be a glossary page pointless optimisation game, considering that the phrase was used consistently over time by several different people (forum search link 1, forum search link 2), to explain its meaning and contexts to an average newcomer trying to grasp the basics?

Looking at https://catagolue.hatsya.com/census/b3s ... ffset=7600, is the 17-bit pseudo still life max cost at 16G (and not 18 as the wiki table has?). And I figure the other rows should be checked.

Unexplained removal of 'capped'
("A capped version of this gun was [...]" -> "An oscillator version of this gun was [...]")
The new version is awkward ("oscillator version"), and capped is an existing well-defined term used specifically in this context. I believe the previous wording should be restored back.

Capped refers to using eaters to eat glider outputs. Oscillator refers to a version that never emitted gliders in the first place.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=141250
Revert -- misleading edit, false claim in the edit summary. LCM oscillators are not engine-based oscillators.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=143785
Revert all three consecutive edits -- nothing says the sparkers have to be 34P7 (as opposed to another p7 sparker); the p126 is not an R-pentomino hassler (despite using an R hassler to support the reaction).

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=142077
Misleading. The discovery of the p126 R hassler did not "lead to" the U-turner hassler -- it is just that the R hassler was used as a component. The claim "based on this oscillator" in the viewer caption is incorrect; the central part of the U-turner hassler is the p126 engine, and the R hassler is only used as a sparker.

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=139370
"P16" -> "p16"

EDIT by dvgrn: I had already started working on one of these articles; have made corrections somewhat along these lines -- no reverts, though. A revert would have removed a punctuation improvement in one case.

I think the pattern in Pi ship 1 is large enough that it would display better outside the infobox.
First, there is simply more space (width) outside the infobox.
Second, in this case there are two similar patterns shown in the article. Putting both patterns in a single gallery is a simple way to highlight the similarity and differences between them.

Compare two revisions of the article: Also, the patterns display better when ZOOM values in viewers are integer multiples of THUMBSIZE (which is either 2 or 3 in most cases).

(added later)
https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=135461
(1) A natural description ("transparent long boat glider loop") is replaced with a more awkward description ("NW-2T16 and dependent syringe loop").
(2) Incorrect linking (the correct link would be dependent syringe).

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=142041
Removal of rulestring. Rulestring should be kept in the article, so that readers who are not familiar with aliases do not have to follow the link to know what is the rule.
https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=141926 Add the rulestring so that readers do not have to follow the link to know what is the rule.
https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=137731 Add the rulestring; same reason.

As a rule of thumb, talk pages are never deleted. An exception is when the talk page contains nothing but a complete gibberish.
That talk page contains an old relevant discussion, and additionally is linked from elsewhere.

No. The name is proposed recently and is not in common use.
As for the active object, are there (m)any known connectable conduits that transform a more common object into this one?

The unnamed catalyst in Snark64 should be systematically named "ship on carrier siamese bookend".

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 8, rule = B3/S23Super
2.2pA$.pA.pA$.2pA2$.AW2I$2.W2.I$A3.2I$2A!
