FWKnightship's spaceship constructions in Harvest Moon (8c/97, 48c/160, 8c/25876 and 90c/450) definitely needs more appreciation.

Re: Thread for your miscellaneous posts and discussions
There's nothing very surprising in newcomers making new threads.
First, it is meaningless to describe a rule as "successful" or not. Some rules are more explored than other rules. Different rules may be explored in different ways / different directions.
Finding reusable technology (e.g. glider reflectors, duplicators) in B35/S23 would indeed be a notable discovery, which could be mentioned in the wiki article.
However, I don't really understand it, when someone wants to make reusable technology a requirement. Judging a rule by the amount of known technology is inherently biased. (Over)focusing on technology misses other ways how a rule may happen to be interesting and notable.
Gliders and glider syntheses are still interesting even if there's no known glider gun.
High-period agars are still interesting even if the rule is exploding.
High-period oscillators are still interesting even if growth is impossible.
etc.
There are a few different points here mixed together.

A word being used a thousand times does not necessarily mean that it’s the most common one being used.
Anyways.

Unfortunately this would be slightly imperfect because 3 x 86 = 258 > 256 and one would need to compute the last two bits from the first 256 bits.

Maybe if we force the number of on cells in the 2 rows to be even? Or just have a 3x86 where 2 cells are always off. Or just make a 3x85, where the last bit gets ignored. Adding a 5x52 or 5x51 symmetry would be good. I don't see why 8x32 searching is useful.confocaloid wrote: ↑December 12th, 2023, 7:01 pmMaybe apgsearch needs the 3x86 pseudosymmetry (by analogy with 8x32, 4x64, 2x128, 1x256)?hotcrystal0 wrote: ↑December 12th, 2023, 6:19 pm3-cell high diehard, lifespan can be extended by making the leftmost “block placer” longer:Code: Select all

Maybe we should consider MCPS for everything, like oscillator s, guns and basically all.

MCPS is an useful way to measure patterns and an alternative to bounding box or population. The problem is that it is nontrivial to compute, unless it is very small. One could enumerate all patterns with MCPS below 10 or so, but you'll need an algorithm for solving an interesting puzzle to be able to determine MCPS of larger patterns.Haycat2009 wrote: ↑December 16th, 2023, 9:12 amMaybe we should consider MCPS for everything, like oscillator s, guns and basically all.
Can you write a Golly script that reliably computes the MCPS of a pattern, e.g. some glider synthesis of your choice, or the p46-based PRNG, or Sir Robin, or waterbear?

Hard, but do able; you just need to find the population first, identify the polyplets, then bridge the gaps by ensuring each extra count has as many neighbours as possible.confocaloid wrote: ↑December 16th, 2023, 4:24 pmMCPS is an useful way to measure patterns and an alternative to bounding box or population. 85 cells:
This seems like it could be a fun game, similar to the old game of "make this into a still life." I'm not sure what that says about the difficulty of the problem. An SAT solver might be able to handle it quickly, despite the hardness of the problem in theory. I'm not sure how to set up a requirement that all parts of the pattern are connected, though.

With enough usable software tools for finding, collecting and exploring known components and reactions, there could be seemingly totally ridiculous patterns involving seemingly unrelated parts interacting in unexpected ways. Something like an engineered spaceship involving a random-looking dense still life, which is painstakingly constructed by colliding dozens of gliders, only to be hit later by a loafer and converted into some reaction which could not be initiated in any simpler known way (given the restrictions), and somehow the whole "build a dense still life and hit it with a loafer" enterprise happens to be the single best known way to solve the problem.

I think we should make the rest canon as well. The Conway Life community is known for its expressiveness and flowery, evocative jargon, after all.
How about we start by making long^4 "remarkably long"? That's a fairly modest description that fits well with "very long" and "extra long". I'd also propose long^5 to be "terribly long", and long^6 "absurdly long".

Unlikely events happen.
My silence does not imply agreement, nor indifference. If I disagreed with something in the past, then please do not construe my silence as something that could change that.

Some day, you too will feel the unbridled joy of a 9 year old who thinks they've found something cool.

Recognition does not reduce to popularity contest. It is currently too underrated.
Compare "one other person who ran your pattern and understood it" vs "dozens of likes without any deep understanding / based on misunderstanding".
