I think mangos, half-bakeries, and ship-ties should be included in the octo3obj and octohash databases.
superstrings, fuses, waves, wicks, and agars are cool

That could be possible at the expense of something else.
The complete set of data files in the octo3obj database is about 8.5 GB on the disk. Probably adding mangoes to the mix would increase that to a few dozens GB.
Maybe an online tool could work, if someone was willing to implement and host it.
Another possibility would be to avoid storing most data, and instead have a very fast generate-and-test tool which will enumerate constellations with your chosen constraints, run all resulting collisions and filter them as desired.

It is trivial. You can use lifeviewer to identify the oscillator and see if there are any cells oscillating at full period.

LifeViewer is the Javascript code that animates the above code block.

Open the LifeViewer window by clicking "Show in Viewer". Click inside that window, then hit the F6 function key.

After a little while, you should see a result giving the period of the oscillator, and you can click on an icon at the right to see the "Map":

The slow salvo glider cost might be a reasonable alternative metric for glider guns. What is the least number of slow gliders from southeast that will build a period 97 glider gun, starting from a single block?

Names do not have to be good.

In terms of commonness in actual on-topic discussions, 30P5H2V0 is as common as you can hope for.
In terms of clarity, I believe amling proved that it is the unique 30-cell orthogonal 2c/5 p5 spaceship. So it is unambiguous.
Further, similar Pentadecathlon IDs are used for many other objects (spaceships, oscillators) in a reasonably consistent way.

All things considered, I like the existing systematic name 30P5H2V0 better than an arbitrary name which you're trying to force on the community via an edit war.

I just got curious about what's actually known about said rule. So I did a forum search and found the quoted posts.
Despite slight changes in wording and a little bit more details in the later post, it's basically the same chatty spammy sentiment repeated again and again ("has many periodic natural objects").

If you're interested in a rule, the best way to show that is to explore it yourself, and post and describe as many interesting results as you could find. That would be a way to show others that the rule is interesting. Repeating "has many periodic natural objects" again and again is not too convincing (lots of rules have many periodic natural objects), and it doesn't really contribute anything new to the existing knowledge about the rule.

There seems to be a proliferation of new users this last few days - all breaking more than one forum rule per user. Seems all of them are spambots.

There are a few users with posts in Russian, and one in Spanish.

Suggestions for solving the problem:
- Ban the spambots
- Stop new users from joining for 14 days

if this continues we may have to shut down the site forever...

Please don't worry about the spambots. They're no more than a minor nuisance -- certainly not a reason to consider doing anything radical.

The current level of spam happens every year or three, when some new spammer or new variant spam-generating software appears on the scene. When the spam posts keep getting mercilessly deleted almost as soon as they show up, eventually the message gets across and the spammers stop trying.

It's safe to completely ignore the spam posts -- there's usually no need to even report them, though you're welcome to do so if you want. Definitely don't reply to any spam posts, though; that just creates more cleanup work.

I am wondering what is the limit of 2^n as n approaches aleph zero. Is it aleph zero or 2^(aleph zero)?
At first, it seems that the limit of 2^n as n approaches aleph zero is simply 2^(aleph zero). By Cantor's theorem, this means that this limit is strictly greater than aleph zero.
But if you think about it as a sequence of terms approaching the limit:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128,..., x
Shouldn't x be aleph zero? After all, it is the same sequence as:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,..., aleph zero
With terms that are not a power of 2 being omitted. The sequence of natural numbers approaches aleph zero, of course, and the omission of terms cannot increase the value of the limit of a sequence. So it seems that the limit of 2^n as n approaches aleph zero is aleph zero.
So we have two seemingly valid arguments that this limit is both greater than and equal to aleph zero.
Now, the logic of one of these arguments could be flawed (more likely the second one), but where is that flaw, if it exists?

The apgsearch soup size can be increased from 16x16 by creating a dedicated ruletable:
  • Patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-1 cells evolve into patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-2 cells, following the rule B1357/S1357.
  • Patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-2 cells evolve into patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-3 cells, following the rule B1357/S1357.
  • ...
  • Patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-6 cells evolve into patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-7 cells, following the rule B1357/S1357.
  • Patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-7 cells follow the desired rule to be apgsearched, and remain patterns entirely made out of state-0 and state-7 cells.
This example has 8 cellstates, and the resulting soup size is roughly 28x28. One could play with the number of cellstates to adjust the resulting soup size, and with the B1 rule to be applied to get different distributions of alive cells / 3x3 conditions.
