Two questions:
1.Why are Catacryst and Metacatacryst are named so?Is it related to "catalyst" and "crystal"?
2.How many ways are there in which two 34P13s can share one or two common blocks if we consider different phases? And how to tell them apart besides apgcodes? What if there are more?

2. There are 3 ways two of these can share blocks: in a straight line, at right angles, or both simultaneously. Both oscillators can have one of 13 different phase separations between the (+0..+12), but since they are both the same, and all 3 kinds of interactions are symmetrical, symmetry reduces this to 7 distinct ones (+0..+6). The block cannot eat both oscillators simultaneously, so +0 is never viable. The other 6 (+1..+6) are viable when one block is shared, but +1 and +3 don't work when both blocks are shared, yielding 16 viable sharings:

Thanks!Maybe we can name them like "cis/trans/double-block 34P13 on +n 34P13" where +n is the phase difference?mniemiec wrote: There are 3 ways two of these can share blocks: in a straight line, at right angles, or both simultaneously. For methuselahs' names:why are Iwona,Justyna,Lidka,Blom and Eve named so?Is the reason just like why Ed,Fred and Edna are named?
And who named that pattern "Cambrian-Explosion" in Golly?
EDIT:Why "any pattern covering the whole plane that is periodic in both space and time" is called agar?Isn't that a kind of substance?Previously I decided to call it "瓷砖(tile)".

Re: Help with names
Presumably, it's named Cambrian Explosion after the biological event, due to the myriad different species of Life specimens in the pattern.GUYTU6J wrote:Who named that pattern "Cambrian-Explosion" in Golly?
Re: Help with names
Or perhaps "cis/trans/double siamese bi-34P13" (siamese, since they share cells). Unfortunately, nomenclature gets less and less precise, the more complex the objects get.GUYTU6J wrote:Thanks!Maybe we can name them like "cis/trans/double-block 34P13 on +n 34P13" where +n is the phase difference?
Probably just random people's names given by the pattern discoverers.
And who named that pattern "Cambrian-Explosion" in Golly?
In the early days of Life, there was a series of patterns found consisting of a very long snake-like pattern, with a stable cap, a long diagonal line, and an unstable end. This "burned" up the diagonal line, periodically leaving behind debris (or sometimes nothing). As this resembled a burning fuse, such patterns were called "fuses". This term became generalized to any pattern that had a periodic repeating body, with an unstable end that would eat through the body.GUYTU6J wrote:Why "any pattern covering the whole plane that is periodic in both space and time" is called agar?Isn't that a kind of substance?Previously I decided to call it "瓷砖(tile)".
From "fuse" came the term "wick" (which in real life is a fuse that has not yet been ignited) to describe the periodic part of the above-mentioned patterns - i.e. patterns that repeated infinitely in one dimension. These sometimes apply to still-lifes, but more commonly to oscillators - especially, oscillators that can stabilize copies of themselves (so they can exist in wick form) but for which finite stabilizations are not yet known, so they can only be studied in wick form.
A name was later needed for patterns that repeated infinitely in two dimensions. Again, while this can apply to stable patterns, it is more frequently used to describe oscillators for which stable one-dimensional or finite forms are not yet known. The term "agar" in real life is a substance that is used in a laboratory to foster growth of bacteria that cannot grow in isolation, but flourish when grown in a nutrient medium. In Life, agars are similar - the universe may be thought of as consisting of repeating copies of a certain medium that can support certain behavior that cannot survive in isolation.

Re: Help with names
Wilma and Homer continue a specific just-for-funsies convention for new lifetime-record-breaking methuselahs: find a fictional character that shares the name of the previous record-holder, then name the new one after their spouse.GUYTU6J wrote:BumpThis convention applies to Wilma, Homer, Sir Robin and minstrel, right? How about Bronco?mniemiec wrote:Probably just random people's names given by the pattern discoverers.
Sir Robin's naming was decided on in page 2 of the thread announcing its discover. In short, the character Sir Robin is a knight who "bravely ran away", the ship is a knightship running as fast as possible, and it sets a precedent for how to name future elementary knightships.
The reason for naming for the bronco is recounted here.

The ouroboros is a symbol of a snake and/or dragon eating its own tail, and that oscillator can be thought of as a "snake" of queen bees each eating the beehive of the previous queen bee.GUYTU6J wrote:What about "ouroborus bees"Code: Select all

1) The ouroboros is a symbol of a snake eating its own tail, wrapped in a circle. The queen bees eat each other's beehives in a similar fashion.GUYTU6J wrote:What about "ouroborus bees"and "?22-trans-mirrored long"Code: Select all

2, 3, 4) These seem to have been provisional names assigned by someone who didn't bother to come up with true systematic names. The initial number is the number of cells in the still life, but beyond that, there's no real system, just general observations about what the SL or its parts look like. I would probably call 2) "I-trans-skewed bookends siamese tables" — the way these things are normally named is neither clear nor consistent (see the b3s23/C1/xs14 Catagolue tabulation for an example), but from what I feel should be the case, "skewed" refers to the 2-cell offset between the inductors; "trans" refers to the fact that the inductors are facing opposite directions, as in chemical terminology; and "I" distinguishes this form from the "Z" form, which is skewed in the opposite direction:

Thanks! What about alef_and_trans-pond?
From ?-amoeba_10,6,4 and ?-amoeba_7,4,4, I conclude that such nomenclature is similar to the (obsolete?) methane-derivated alkane nomenclature, where 2,3,3-trimethylhexane would be "dimethyl n-propyl isopropyl methane" according to my Basic Organic Chemistry textbook. Here, choose an ON cell and count the number of ON cells in the branching groups, then list them in decreasing order.

That name seems fine. "Alef" is a name for that induction coil, which is fairly rare so I don't know if it has another name or not, and the pond is diagonally opposed to the protruding side of the induction coil.GUYTU6J wrote:Thanks! What about alef_and_trans-pond?Code: Select all

In my opinion, including cell counts in a pattern name is doing it wrong. The first one above would probably be "doubly inflected symmetric scorpion with tail" — "symmetric scorpion" usually refers to this SL:GUYTU6J wrote:From ?-amoeba_10,6,4 and ?-amoeba_7,4,4, I conclude that such nomenclature is similar to the (obsolete?) methane-derivated alkane nomenclature, where 2,3,3-trimethylhexane would be "dimethyl n-propyl isopropyl methane" according to my Basic Organic Chemistry textbook. There was some diagram captioned with 'glider causes havoc' in which a glider collision resulted in the production of a mango (along with lots of chaos), and (owing to mistranslation) Achim Flammenkamp reasoned that the mango was called 'havoc'.A for awesome wrote:"hovac" is a misspelling of "havoc", an uncommon alternative name for the mango that is occasionally used on Catagolue for whatever reason.

The barberpoles' and alkanes' naming convention with numeral prefixes(why not "prefices"?) are confusing, in which Latin and Greek are mixed. But there is a more confusing case with loops.

Re: Help with names
There are several names in Life that a numerical property of a pattern suggests a name based on real-world things associated with similar numbers. E.g.:GUYTU6J wrote:Add two terms:B-52 bomber(Why it is a bomber?)

AK47: reaction with period 47, same number as in name of real-life weapon AK47.
B29: spaceship with population 29, same number as in name of real-life B-29 bomber.
B-52 bomber: gun (i.e. object that shoots projectiles) with modulus 52, same as in name of real-life B-52 bomber (vehicle that drops projectiles).
Burloaferimeter: period 7 oscillator found by Dave Buckingham, same number as population of a "burloaf" (what Buckingham called a Loaf), i.e. the oscillator's period "measures" the still-life's population.
Centinal: period 100 oscillator (evokes Latin "Cent-", and is a pun on Sentinel).
Hebdarole: like fumarole, but period 7 (cognate of Greek "Hepta-").

We are already WAY too attached to "pentadecathlon"GUYTU6J wrote:Next is pentadeca!muzik wrote: Nina, deca, undeca, duodeca, tredeca, quatturodeca
That's actually the page I copied most of them from lmao
Why don't we just simply change the "ium" suffix to "pole"
It may be improper.
It may be a mashup.
But that is the way it is.....

Re: Help with names
None of them really have the intention to name those uninteresting SLs. Even useful SLs like 31.4 rarely get namesotismo wrote:I would name them, if I were you.....GUYTU6J wrote:When there is only one living cell in the rotor, there are two ways to change it into a still life.mniemiec wrote: stillater - An oscillator within a still-life (?).None of these have appeared on Catagolue yetCode: Select all

Re: Help with names
Out of all the (generally accepted) object names I've seen, none have been nearly as weird as $rats. Where did this name come from?

Lilly PetuniasGUYTU6J wrote:The name "Laputa" comes from the famous novel Gulliver's Travels.
Why is the name given to an oscillator instead of a spaceship that really looks like a floating island?
comes from Gulliver's Travels
they were talking about Marriage
( I assume Holy Matrimony )
the five P "flowers" that are really weeds that you do NOT want in your garden :
Petunias spit
Poppys pop off
Pansys are now "gay"
Poseys posers and wannabes
Peonies peons ( duh )
