I can see that your discovery improved from the last ones:
Regarding to your last 'conduit', dvgrn wrote:• Glider goes in, glider comes out (could be promising so far...)
• One still life gets rotated and moved a little distance (oops, very bad)
• One still life disappears and is not replaced (oops again, very very bad)
Those last two problems would have to be solved first (...) Even though the above pattern also has
• Clean B-heptomino/Herschel signal comes out (big bonus!)
Well now, it's:
Something goes in and...(Hmm...)
• Clean B-heptomino/Herschel signal comes out (big bonus!)
No still life gets destroyed (Great!)
So great to see that you are distinguishing catalysis from non-catalysis. Keep on with that.

However, there's another thing worth noting. The "purpose" of conduits is to link to other conduits to assemble a loop / track / etc to send a pattern in a particular space at a particular time. Therefore,
1) The inputs and outputs should be common objects in order to connect to another known conduit. (R, B, G, H, Pi, BG, QB, Dove/Rmango etc.)
2) The input and output should have space to link to other conduits.

In your something-to-B,
1) I don't think that 'something' is a common object in random ash.
2) If we ASSUME that something is common (Again, it's not a common object. Just assuming.), let's see if the conduit is a useful one. We have to see which direction 'something' comes from. If that thing usually comes from the ...
  • Left, then it would be a good conduit, as we could (probably) place a preceding X-to-something on the left.
  • Top, then the input object would be blocked by an eater2, so no.
  • Bottom, then the output herschel would collide with the input conduit.
  • Right, then it's a bit tricky. The space itself is open, but there is a block to clean up. (Which, by the way, can be cleaned up with this:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 24, rule = LifeHistory
4.A$3.A.A$3.A.A$.3A.2A$A$.3A.2A$3.A.2A$12.B$19.2A$10.2B3.2A2.A$8.B6.A
.A.A$7.4B7.A$6.5B$5.6B5.A$5.7B3.A.A$5.7B4.A$5.2B3E2B5.3A$4.BE.BE2B8.A
$4.5E2B$4.2EBE3B$5.6B$6.DB2D$6.3D$7.D!
I found it manually, so I think there could be a better way. But, I just did this to demonstrate, not because it is useful or anything.)
Anyway you have to clean up the block, so there is not likely to be space in the right.

Well this was a(nother) rough guideline to see if a conduit is useful or not. Hope it helps. Good luck.

How do then I soup search for "something"?

No, you don't soup search for 'something' because starting from known objects (R, B, G, H, Pi, BG, QB, Dove/Rmango or maybe something else you see common) is far far easier. And believe me, building a H-to-'that thing' would take much more time than to find another conduit from a common methuselah.
(One more thing: As a small puzzle, the eater2 in your pattern can be reduced to an eater1 roughly the same place. If you find it hard, as a hint, compare the eaters eating a glider.)

The most common objects that link into and out of conduits are the glider (G), Herschel (H), B-heptomino (B), pi-heptomino (P), R-pentomino (R) and century (C). Less common ones include the block-and-glider (W), queen bee (A) and the Herschel without its FNG (Q).

Let's just discard my something (now tumblr)-to-B. It is easier searching for signals that appear from known objects. A wing might do for it for now.

I found a W-to-K (K-nonomino or broken loaf):

useless or broken conduit
... You did read what other people said to your conduit, right? The catalysts should be recovered in order to be a useful conduit. AND I'm not sure if that K appears in other conduits.

By the way, finding conduits by hand are pretty hard, and I recommend using programs such as ptbsearch or bellman. (And that means studying how to use those utilities.) You could get executables (exe files) in "Search Utilities Executable?" thread I opened in the Scripts thread, and you could get detailed explanation, although not organized, in the ptbsearch and Bellman thread in the scripts thread. It's harder than connecting simple conduits, but I guess it's worth it.

Another option is catgl (which uses python) which would be in Catalyst Improvements WIP thread in the scripts thread.

yeah an invention.
A partial P-to-G that is promising as the glider can go to a G-to-H-to-(n>3)G, and two of the 3G form the block again, as the rest clean the junk, remaining one that is the output.

Needed : 3+ gliders and a Pi
Produced : 1 glider
So no it's not useful. The catalyst is damaged and you know it. Please stop posting useless things if you want attention from other members. (If you don't want attention, I don't mind. (shrug))
EDITed in case you didn't notice. Good night.

EDIT: The mechanism you present does work in theory, but nobody does that as it is smaller and faster to do the same thing without that.

The catalyst is remade through a glider synthesis. The 6 gliders come from the Pi output, from which:
- 3 clear the junk;
- 2 synthesize the block;
- 1 escapes to form the P-to-G.

There are only one glider escaping in the reaction you posted. It's late at night here so I can't post a reply now. I recommend you to download Catgl if you can install python, or study Bellman or ptbsearch if you are interested in conduit searches.

ONE glider goes, i put G-to-3Gs to make them 6G.
almost done, remains only the synthesis and fixing one of the snarks:

You want to massively delay one of the gliders. But I think you actually have a more fundamental problem, namely that the gliders aren't even on the correct lanes to synthesise that block (possibly due to a parity error). Also, once the lanes are correct, you need to ensure that the relative phases of the two gliders are correct (mod 8) before adjusting the relevant circuitry to achieve the exact timing.

Basically, these timing problems are incredibly annoying and you just have to tolerate them. You might find this adjustable delay circuit reasonably useful:

Code: Select all

It delays a glider by precisely 320 ticks, although you can increase this by any multiple of 8 by 'trombone-sliding' the south-east pair of snarks further away from the north-west bisnark.

What's a 270° stable reflector, and how does it differ from a 90° stable reflector? If you mean one where the input and output streams cross, I believe you'll find this one to be optimal based on present technology:

Code: Select all

x = 49, y = 38, rule = LifeHistory
9.A$9.3A$12.A$11.2A7.C$11.5B3.BC.C$13.3B2.2B2C$3.2A7.9B9.2D$3.A8.8B

What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

My one is better because its pseudo-period (min. spacing of gliders in input stream) is smaller than the one of the reflector you posted!
Also it is based on my own H-to-G!

dvgrn, please label my H-to-G and the following W-to-G for me!

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 13, rule = LifeHistory
4.A$3.A.A$3.A.A$.3A.2A$A$.3A.2A$3.A.2A3$23.E$22.2E$21.E$21.2E!
Anyone think the following reaction interesting?

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 42, rule = LifeHistory
.2A$A2.A$4A2$4A$A2.A$.2A5$10.E$9.2E$8.E$8.2E26$12.2A$12.2A!

The H-to-G and W-to-G are variants of known conduits, which isn't a bad thing in it's own right - the problem is that these probably won't be important all that often and they don't have unusual/unique mechanisms - the eaters behave as normal, and in both cases the goal is simply to eat some excess junk after the object naturally emits a glider on its own.

Variants aren't bad, but you have to think - does the reaction envelope have a shape differing in a significant way from other variants? Does it have extra glider outputs? Do its catalysts act in ways that they aren't known to? (they must still repair themselves or it's not a conduit)

The new reaction isn't interesting because cap-on-caps are hard to make, and it gets destroyed immediately upon impact. The block doesn't reappear either, so that's another problem.

Someone please help me with Bellman? Because its documentation is confusing for me.

Code: Select all

#S max-active 12
#S first-encounter 6
#S max-live 95
#P 0 0

  1. The HWSS displace the beehive. Very good!
  • The beehive moves obliquely. Big bonus!
  • The beehive is rotated. Bad... unlike a glider can rotate it back!
  • There is no rake to do this. Very bad!

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 11, rule = LifeHistory
3.8B2A$.8BA4BA$15BA$9BA5BA$10B6A$14B$12B$8.B.2B$8.4B2.2A$9.2B2.A2.A$
14.2A!

I'm not sure how to help you with Bellman, but the biggest problem is how many unknowns you have placed - there's just going to be too many possibilities for the program to try - the files that find new catalysts typically have at most around 40 unknown cells, compared to the 200+ (?) unknowns you've placed. As a search space grows, the slowness tends to increase exponentially, and this is why even a well-made input file may take a long time to return a result. Search utilities use various tricks to keep the searches quick and not spend too much time on unpromising branches of the search space, but with increasing complexity the time that is needed to complete will still begin to increase very rapidly.
