Another problem I am facing is that when I put most herschel conduits after a syringe, the syringe's eater conflicts with the next conduit FNG eater so a G-to-somethingelse would be useful.

The standard syringe has an eater for the next conduit's FNG incorporated into it already. So often you can just leave out the FNG eater in the next conduit, and everything will work.

You used the "dependent syringe" (just a plain eater2 instead of the more complicated combined still life) in your latest LWSS gun. There's a way to leave the whole F166 conduit out of your construction, if you use the syringe variant above instead.

Gustavo already knows about welding; he fused the eaters in the H-to-Pi and Pi-to-LWSS by adding two cells and an R-bee. (It's evident that Gustavo did that himself, since there's a combination of yellow and green cells in the same still-life.)

Alternatively... you posted a "Big G-to-G", but as you noticed when building the loafer gun, the bigger things are, the more they get in each other's way -- bigger is not better.

So: what's the smallest G-to-G that you can find, for each of the four possible output directions? How about the smallest that produces four output gliders, one in each direction?

No, there's no need for Bellman if you just want a smaller G-to-G. You seem to be practicing with the elementary conduits collection. Well, there are plenty of options in that collection that you can connect together, to build either

1) lots of different G-to-G circuits that are smaller than the one you posted, and
2) a pi eater that you could attach to your G-to-pi circuit. (That wouldn't be particularly useful, but it might be good practice.)

If you want a significantly bigger Herschel-related challenge, you could try rebuilding your loafer gun into a glider-to-loafer converter, along the same lines as chris_c's recent glider-to-weekender converter.

I'm not really recommending that as your next challenge, though! That's several steps up from the loafer gun -- there's quite a bit to learn about signal timing adjustments, to make something like that work.

On the other hand, unless I'm forgetting something, no one has ever built a glider-to-loafer converter before. It would be much smaller and simpler than the glider-to-weekender pattern. It would be interesting to see how small a space it could be packed into.

EDIT: But for the "packing" part, it would be a good idea to work on reducing your loafer gun in size first, for practice. It's currently 618x570. The gun could easily be made to fit into a third of that area, say, 400x300. Smaller than that is certainly possible, but would need more sneaky tricks.

You've always been able to post whatever Life-related stuff you want on this thread. No need to ask permission! Again, the only limits here are those you set for yourself.

It's good to set limits for yourself, though. Suppose you post a lot of hoaxes, or ideas that aren't explained well enough to make sense to anyone else. It feels like a waste of time to try to figure out all those messages, but there keep being more and more of them. So eventually almost everyone will stop reading your posts, and/or you'll get banned from the forums. That's the way it works for everybody, really.

Here are some examples that you might be able to use, to decide for yourself whether or not a discovery you've made is really interesting enough that you should post it. I'll try to keep this short, so please ask questions if you don't understand.

Example #1:

I found a reaction where two gliders make a tub into a beehive.

• There are two different ways that one glider can convert a tub into a beehive.
• Hit a tub with a random glider from any direction, and you're more likely to get a beehive than any other object.
• This has been known since sometime in 1970.
• A pattern tends to be much less interesting if it uses more gliders (or other signals) than are needed.

Example #2:

Found a 2H->2BLNKR...

Okay, this is a really important one. Not counting the loafer-gun discussion, quite a few of your recent posts are similar to this one.

First, if you need two synchronized input signals -- two Herschels arriving at exactly the same time, in this case -- then people will expect that you're building something pretty interesting.

Second, by "2H->2BLNKR" you're implying that you've found some kind of conduit.

• The pattern you posted isn't a conduit, because it can't be used again.
• To use it again, the boats would have to be replaced somehow.
• Of course this could be done, but it would take a lot more circuitry to do it.
• The boat-building circuitry might need more input Herschels.
• A pattern tends to be much less interesting if it uses more Herschels (or other signals) than are needed.

Also, the FNG isn't really considered necessary to remove in a conduit unless it destroys it otherwise, since it's usually easy to add a fishhook eater or TWIT (eater 5) to get rid of it.

Gustavo, without search scripts you are not really getting forward. Things you're trying to achieve are not normally done manually anymore. For instance, in order to finding catalyses you could use gencols, ptbsearch, CatForce or Bellman, depending on your needs.

The topmost boat can't be catalyzed, because the debris beehive would overlap this hypothetical catalyst.

Even if the boats could be catalyzed, which they most likely can't, this reaction is unnotable for some reasons:

•The Pi is surrounded on almost all sides, so it would be impossible to get a pi in that position.
•There are many, many pi-to-beehives in existence. Simply do a bellman/catforce etc. search on a single pi-heptoino and you will find many still life factories.
•There isn't much use for a pi-to-beehive that destroys two boats.
