I don't know a lot about cellular automata, but I am a fan of artificial life simulations and I recently became interested with it after learning more about game of life.

The Powder Toy has GOL built into it and the ability to create custom life. Using the ruleset B3/S25 I randomly doodled sort of an approximation of a double strand of DNA and was ruminating about complex information systems forming out of chaos, until I unpaused the simulation and let it run. I don't want to influence your presumptions any more then I already have, I've attached screenshots. What do YOU see?

I really don't know who would be interested in this so I'm posting it here because Reddit has a very small GOL community. I hope you guys enjoy. Also, if this ruleset hasn't already been named I propose, "Angels", or "Angel".

I know, clever. :wink:

The single strand also produces a similarly heavenly figure

Welcome to the forums! We generally recommend starting from Tutorials and FAQ to get familiar with this forums.

Unfortunately, the pattern does not show particular significance (especially "complex information systems" or religious meaning) compared with an average random soup; it simply converges to constellations of small oscillators, which just happen to bear some symmetry due to the starting configuration. Here is a pattern of this shape that is drawn in a professional program Golly:

Code: Select all

x = 129, y = 64, rule = B3/S25

It's hard to describe information systems in cellular automata in a sentence, but the "Circuitry and Logic" part in this book should give you a comprehensive introduction. In short, these signal-processing patterns are unikely to arise naturally, and it has nothing to do with DNA pixel arts.

bit condescending tbh, I appreciate the links and I'll look into it more, but I don't quite get what you are suggesting here. The "signal processing pattern" did arise naturally and I don't think there's anything actually "angelic" or 'religious' about this rule set, I just wanted to show off this cool looking configuration I doodled that looks like two angels in it's final state.

The code you attached also didn't bare any resemblance to what I generated fyi. They weren't kidding when they said this community isn't very welcoming to amateurs lool.

Oh, maybe I should have clarified what we consider as "signal": a signal is something different from background that can be stored, transported, read, processed and interpreted, just as in digital logic circuitry. So something that just sit still do not really look like a "signal" to me.
...and I don't think there's anything actually "angelic" or 'religious' about this rule set, I just wanted to show off this cool looking configuration I doodled that looks like two angels in it's final state.
Sorry, that was my harsh misunderstanding. A lot of newcomers actually started like that — but they would later learn about the notion of notability.
The code you attached also didn't bare any resemblance to what I generated fyi.
If your browser has Javascript enabled, there should be a SHOW IN VIEWER link above the code box, which you can click so as to simulate the pattern in a LifeViewer. The code is in a format named RLE, which is indeed not immediately human-readable; but sharing patterns in this way allows much easier viewing, copying and editing for others compared with images.

First, most outer-totalistic rules have been searched, and it’s not worth a thread if you only want to talk about this - of course, unless it have either:
1.engineering potential(like the (23,5)c/79 herschel climber, which can be found on the “LifeWiki” ’s search).
2.special uses, like a faster spaceship speed(than any other possible one), elementary mathemetic problem emulator, etc.
3.PLEASE READ LIFEWIKI FIRST!!! LifeWiki have almost all the required knowledge of Celluar Automatas. If you don’t know some of the words, search them in conwaylife.com/lifewiki.
This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit.

something useless:

Code: Select all

 #CXRLE Pos=-8,-6
x = 11, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
5bo$6bo$4b3o$9b2o$9b2o3$3o$2bo$bo!

You do realize this is impossible, right?

Please be kind first. Not all your statements are correct.
Also by saying that I mean that everyone might not be interested in the same thing, for example I would consider herschel climbers useless in OCA

(Also, how is a faster than lightspeed spaceship special use? It is just a normal ships that exists in HROT and other rules
