SlowLife

Post by hotdogPi » April 30th, 2021, 5:57 pm

This is not my rule, and it's not new, but we don't have a thread on it.

SlowLife works in half generations. Cells turn green before being fully on and red before fully dying. If an on cell is adjacent to a red or green cell, it won't die.

Gutter symmetry works even if it's half a generation apart.

These were both on Discord, so I'm adding them to the forums for those without Discord:

The new p41 partial from Life works perfectly in SlowLife (although it can be argued that it's not truly p41 since the blinkers are still p2). Specifically, an off-phase blinker can be used the same way a clock can suppress births in regular Life without the need for it to be an even number.

I feel like SlowDeathLife isn't a SlowLife variation, as it's not a close Life variant.

I did see "SlowerLife" that deals in thirds of generations instead of halves, which would qualify. However, it's currently only on Discord.

Can this be used for a sawtooth?

Code: Select all

x = 41, y = 38, rule = SlowLife

mvr found a p31 oscillator that relies on off-phase blinkers. (More specifically, it was a Life partial involving clocks, and I turned it into a working SlowLife pattern.)

Identify claims 124 (i.e. 62) because the blinkers are in the opposite position after one cycle, but the active region is definitely period 31.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 14, rule = SlowLife

Trying to use an off-phase blinker as a rock but misplacing it by 4 cells results in a moose antlers when applied to the queen bee shuttle.

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 7, rule = SlowLife
