INT rule siderake competition

Post by Heav » April 23rd, 2021, 9:48 am

Hello. This is a competition for the "best" siderake in 2-state range 1 INT moore neighborhood deterministic rules according to some criteria.

Your siderake must only output on one "side", and must not leave behind other debris.

A spaceship is considered created at the moment where it stops interacting with the siderake and can continue indefinitely with no other obstruction. These are not considered as part of the siderake for scoring purposes, once created.

Your score is (spaceships per generation^2) - (minimum population^2)

For example, this pattern has a minimum population of 13 and 1/8 spaceships per generation. This gives it a rather unfortunate score of -168.984.

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 9, rule = B2-ck/S
o$o$bo7bo$2bo7bo3bo$3bo$4bo$5bo$6bo$7bo3bo!
The goal is to maximize score. The competition starts immediately. Please give your score to 3 decimal places or more if needed.
We know what you did.

There's no point making this thread. Not edited by dvgrn: @dvgrn I'll suggest to mave this thread to the sandbox. Ifinitely large scores can be achieved using these in jslife:

actually, this is not a siderake and thus not a valid submission

Oh man, you didn’t say that it couldn’t be 0ships/gen!

I’m here to prove infinitely large scores could be easily constructed (and hashlife friendly???)

I *did* specify it had to be a siderake, though, which 0 ships/generation cannot be.

May I suggest changing the scoring system? The ships per generation part contributes so little to the final score that it may as well not be there.
I wrote a stdin script that generates random soups of a provided number of a given spaceship. It works for all (non-B0) spaceships in the INT rulespace!
A Multistate INT notation + script.

I think in some special cases it might actually be able to contribute significantly.

However, do let me know if you have suggestions.

((2/5)n)^2-(16+2n)^2=not enough

Code: Select all

x = 85, y = 7, rule = B1e2cen3-aij4ijqrt5cjry6-ei/S1e2ain3cny4nwyz5ijn6ak8

Seriously, though. Is a positive score even possible? The period of the breeder that creates the guns should be a multiple of the period of the guns, so that the guns are all in phase and hit the minimum population at the same time. We want to maximize the ships created per generation and minimize the size of the guns. The size of the breeder does not matter because it only adds a linear amount to the negative part of the score, while the guns add a quadratic amount. The period of the breeder does not matter because we can put the gun-deleting spaceship further back to increase n.

Let's pretend that spaceships are allowed to touch and still be considered created. They're not, but ignoring that only serves to show how ridiculous this is. Note that I'm also pretending that we're allowed to shoot on both sides (we're not). If the size of a gun is q cells and the period of a gun is p, then we have a score of approximately ((2/p)n)^2-(qn)^2.

The minimum possible value for p is 2.

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 2, rule = B2ae3e5y/S1e5i
2o18b2o$19bo2bo!
Oh wait, q is 2, so we have n^2-(2n)^2. Score is negative.

Let's make q equal to 1, and pretend that the ships fired the "wrong way" don't exist, to make things easier for ourselves. In reality, they would become part of q, inflating it to a ridiculous number.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 3, rule = B1e2e4cr5y6cn/S2n3nq5y
o10bo$10bobo$10b3o!
p now has to be at least 3, which means that we have (2n/3)^2-n^2. Still negative.

All I can say is good luck. You'll need it.

Rake same period as th gun and make gun min pop < ships/gen (infinite guns but can delete them, making those guns in a whole ig gun)

My way of doing it is putting a Breeder 1 and two rakes very far away from it so that those rakes destroy the Gosper glider guns.

A Gosper Glider Gun only emits 1/30 spaceships per generation. But it has more than 1/30 cells. Therefore, you lose more than you gain. This design that's way more efficient doesn't manage to reach a positive score.

Code: Select all

I thought you had found a way to keep the spaceships shooting while the gun was gone. Also, the population of the gun-clearer contributes only a constant amount, while the guns contribute a quadratic amount.

It doen’t have to. the gun has a ship/gen index for max gun num/15, while it can be shooting the gun for 2^n_1 - x gens and use x gens to delete all guns, reach mom pop, make all guns again and send the signal into a huge loop.

It doen’t have to. the gun has a ship/gen index for max gun num/15, while it can be shooting the gun for 2^n_1 - x gens and use x gens to delete all guns, reach mom pop, make all guns again and send the signal into a huge loop.
Clever! So a fuse burns the guns away until it reaches the puffer, after which guns get puffed out again?

Not really what I meant, but that is definitely easier to construct than my idea(though I have no idea if this can be proved to have a score of >0, nice one!)
