MidLife

Post by BlinkerSpawn » April 5th, 2021, 9:58 am

Yesterday on Puzzling Stack Exchange, I encountered this CA question about a curious Life variant: Cells are born as standard CGOL, but each tick that they remain alive they alternate between S23 (young, yellow) and S3 (old, orange).

A ruletable:

Code: Select all

@RULE MidLife
@TABLE
n_states:3
neighborhood:Moore
symmetries:permute
var a 1 2
var b a
var c a
var d a
var e a
var X 0 2
var A 0 a
var B A
var C A
var D A
var E A
var F A
var G A
var H A

X a b c 0 0 0 0 0 1 #birth\healing on 3
1 a b C 0 0 0 0 0 2 #aging on 2-3
a A B C D E F G H 0 #death otherwise

@COLORS
1 255 255 0
2 255 127 0
Several objects have been posted in the Community answer by the OP and myself already, but that post is getting rather long so I probably won't add anything else to it.

New spaceships found via random search.

On top: period 20, c/2, fairly unexciting.
Below: period 2, c/2. It's like a racer with a sidecar.

Code: Select all

x=7, y=4, rule = MidLife
2AB$B3.BA$A3.BA$.A2.A10$A.A$2B$A2.A$2.2A$3.2B$
Re-edit: Fixed. Thanks to Schiaparelliorbust for the education!

Welcome to the forums! That's a nice spaceship. I wouldn't call it amazing, but high period sparker spaceships are usually useful. They can be found in large engineered spaceships, puffers, breeders etc. Also, thanks for realizing that the viewer tags are wrong. You can use the code (</>) tags instead.

Found a slinky-fish in a random search, and I found it was generated by a racer colliding with an even slinkier fish with period 12, but still c/2.

Hi Jeremy, welcome to the forum!

For accuracy's sake I should note that the 6c/12 and 10c/20 ships were found a couple of days ago on the Discord here. Here's the 11c/22 from that post:

Thank you for the update, Rocknlol. I think the c/3 had been posted here before, but I had not seen the c/4 or the 11c/22. I assume this is the case, but the racer with tagalong below has also been noted?

Code: Select all

I would be glad to check these resources, but I do not have an invite to Discord, and was not aware there was enough interest in this CA to warrant inclusion in Catagolue. I did check the examples that were given in this thread, but the spaceship I provided is subtly different from a swimmer, being a racer with a true tagalong that does not interfere with the racer's motion.

Apologies if I failed to meet the community's standards, please know it is through ignorance, not intention.

Thanks for being polite and acknowledging your behavior. Usually new users keep on with their somewhat reckless behavior, so you're an exception. Here are the relevant Discord and Catagolue links, by the way.

Don't worry about it; I don't think you said anything reckless or community-violating at all. There's admittedly a bit of a firewall between discussion on the forum and discussion on the DIscord, and I don't think it's reasonable to expect any newcomer to be aware of both at once.

As you may or may not be aware of, Catagolue's main contributing program, apgmera/apgluxe, supports searching arbitrary rules so long as they can be written in Golly's ruletable format. So all it takes is one interested user to warrant inclusion. :)
