### NoTimeAtAll - A circuit rule with squishy signals

Anyone who's ever made almost anything in a CA circuit rule has suffered the tyranny of timing. If your gate inputs aren't perfectly timed, they'll flat-out fail, often silently. NoTimeAtAll introduces a concept to eliminate this concern: signals wait.

NoTimeAtAll, or NTAA, has 5 states and uses a vonNeumann neighborhood. Instead of using the presence of a signal to encode the value of a bit, as is common in other circuit automata, it uses two signal types: green is 1, and red is 0. If a signal arrives at the center line of a T shaped junction, it will enter the intersection immediately and split down each path. In any other scenario, a signal will wait at a junction until all but one entrance to the junction has a signal. When multiple signals collide, they form a one-hot gate, which acts like XOR for two inputs but, unlike XOR, is universal with three inputs or more.

A typical wireworld-like rule follows this logic:
• A wire changes to a head under some logic condition depending on the number of heads. (e.g. 1 <= head_count <= 2 in Wireworld)
• A head always changes to a tail.
• A tail always changes to a wire.
NTAA, on the other hand, follows this:
• A wire with an adjacent tail never changes to a head. This ensures that signals remain separated.
• A wire changes to a head under some logic condition, depending on the number of heads and the number of wire inputs. The state of the head (red vs. green) depends on some function of the surrounding heads.
• A head changes to a tail only if there is no adjacent empty wire.
• A tail changes to a wire only if there is no adjacent head.
This small alteration of rules allows for multiple apparently complex behaviors, like signals pausing at gates to wait for inputs, or waiting in line, or head-on collisions (not shown above) immediately dissipating.

I don't have high hopes for NTAA itself, since a little experimentation reveals several limitations making anything other than combinational logic constructions difficult; however, I highly encourage people to experiment with this type of behavior, and see if you can improve it or incorporate it into a more useful automaton. Note that in the standard barrel your current output is predetermined, but the output of the next input depends wholly on your current input, and there is an option for either.

I vote we call the states 1R2R, 1G2R, 1R2G, and 1G2G— the suffix for the 1 is an R if the “1-slot” (the single cell part of the state at rest) is red, and G if it’s green. Same logic for the “2-slot”, which is the 2-cell blob of head in the barrel when it’s at rest.

Timing is not a tyranny. Indeed, the Moore neighbourhood provides a way out of this problem – it is exploited by Wireworld and Wireworld Modern to the limit in order to synchronise the signals.

I dont have very good words, but;
The sole point of this CA is to have a signal rule with no timing, no realisticity needed.
Some people find timings hard or annoying to deal with, myself included, so this rule is pretty nice. Plus, I dont think any rule like this has been made, so it's the first of it's kind.
Besides that, this rule is pretty fun to look at, it's pretty smooth and as the title suggests, the signals appear squishy. It reminds me of those traffic timelapses.
Also, people are allowed to do whatever the heck they want with rules.
"Timing is a tyranny" was probably a little joke, please learn to tell the difference between jokes and non-jokes and tolerate jokes if they are jokes.

I think the concept is good - and being able to have fully p1 logic is quite nice. However, the fact that signals take up space and cannot be cleanly (let alone selectively) deleted in-line seems like a considerable disadvantage to me - it's like the circuit has memory leaks everywhere that can't be fixed. A Y-shaped gate using diagonals which deletes both signals cleanly if they don't match (and passes them through if they do) might solve that issue in a fairly symmetric fashion, and I don't think it'd be too detrimental to wire packing.

Anyway, here's an 8-bit memory loop, showing a read, a full inversion (which reads out the result as well), and then another read:

That loop is very slow since there's only 3 extra cells in that loop, so processing can only happen when the free cells propagate backwards to the logic. Speaking of annoying latency, what's the fastest Bliptile metacell you can make? Generally, the closer your circuits are to having perfect synchronization, the lower the minimum periods are. I might be able to build a minp6 Bliptile metacell, but that wouldn't be very useful since it would probably be massive and therefore slow for actual metacircuits.
