Diagonal Puffer
x = 16, y = 16, rule = R2,C3,M1,S6..10,B7..8,NM

1. I guess, this was the first puffer discovered in range > 1 in "non-relativistic" rules

by the way, how to define "non-relativistic" for ranges greater than 1:

I spent yesterday trying.

what I know for sure is: R2,B7 seem to me quite different from R2,B5 ...
... as R1,B3 is quite different from R1,B2

----

EDIT: or maybe I should call R2,B7 rules with spaceships : "rules with bugs" ?
R2,B5 .... "rules without bugs" ?

e.g. compare spaceships
https://catagolue.appspot.com/census/r2b7t8s7t10/C1/xq3
https://catagolue.appspot.com/census/r2b5t5s4t6/C1/xq1

----

BTW,
I am probably able to prove (weak) upper limits on the speed of:
A) info transfer
B) orthogonal ships
in rules with any range R, minimal birth Bmin, and width W of the stripe that covers the ship,
with assumptions:
* finite pattern
* infinite space
* long distances
* orthogonal speed

the proofs need to simulate a "covering-rule" e.g.
for R2,B7, the covering-rule is R2,C2,M0,S0..24,B7..24,NM

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = R2,C0,M0,S0..24,B7..24,NM
5o$5o$5o$5o$5o!
With the assumptions above, any rule R2,B7 probably cannot transfer info faster than 1*c;

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = R2,C0,M0,S0..24,B7..24,NM:P100,5
5o$5o$5o$5o$5o!
(and for spaceships of width max. 5, in any rule R2,B7, the ships probably cannot be faster than again 1*c )

----

for B6 the same results
the covering-rule is R2,C2,M0,S0..24,B6..24,NM

----

for B5
the covering-rule is R2,C2,M0,S0..24,B5..24,NM ;
With the assumptions above, any rule R2,B5 probably cannot transfer info faster than 1.5*c;

That is very interesting. The surface of the explosion appears to be too random for that to actually be the case, but the decay of the explosion very clearly emanates from the contact point. I guess that an infinitely-lasting explosion in an otherwise nonexplosive rule is possible, so how should this rule be categorized?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

That whole thread is joking, IceNine wasn't actually found.
muzik's post does not appear to be a troll.

How could I convert between a HROT rulestring and an LtL one? I would like to run this rule in Golly.

Golly 4.0 supports HROT rules natively.

Since it's possible to generalise the block and blinker up an arbitrary value of ranges:

Code: Select all

 x = 9, y = 5, rule = R2,C0,M0,S4..8,B5..5,NM
o$o5b3o$o5b3o$o5b3o$o!
...could it be possible to find a LtL or HROT rule which has these two patterns, an elementary spaceship, and that does not explode, effectively being our standard range 2 version of Life?

Just a recent thought.
This one has somewhat life-like behaviour for large random soups:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 12, rule = R2,C0,S4,6,8,15-24,B5,12-24
5$15b3o$7b5o3b3o$15b3o!
And it turns out the toad can also be be generalised upwards:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 8, rule = R2,C0,S4,8,B5
o9bo9b3o$o9bo9b3o$o9bo9b3o$o9b2o$o9b2o$11bo$11bo$11bo!
As is the beacon and carrier:

Code: Select all

A non-explosive rule with all five of these and also common spaceships and stuff would be interesting.

Seems there's also that one double beacon analogue in this rule as well:

Code: Select all

Since it's possible to generalise the block and blinker up an arbitrary value of ranges:

Code: Select all

 x = 9, y = 5, rule = R2,C0,M0,S4..8,B5..5,NM
o$o5b3o$o5b3o$o5b3o$o!
...could it be possible to find a LtL or HROT rule which has these two patterns, an elementary spaceship, and that does not explode, effectively being our standard range 2 version of Life?

Just a recent thought.
This one has somewhat life-like behaviour for large random soups:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 12, rule = R2,C0,S4,6,8,15-24,B5,12-24
5$15b3o$7b5o3b3o$15b3o!
And it turns out the toad can also be be generalised upwards:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 8, rule = R2,C0,S4,8,B5
o9bo9b3o$o9bo9b3o$o9bo9b3o$o9b2o$o9b2o$11bo$11bo$11bo!
As is the beacon and carrier:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 21, rule = R2,C0,S4,8,B5
3o$3o$3o$11bo$11bo$11bo$3bo6b2o$3bo6b2o$3bo6bo$3bo6bo$3bo6bo5$13b3o$
15bo$3b3o9bo$o4bo4bo$o4bo4bo$3o7b3o!

3b3o$5bo$5bo$o5b3o$o7bo$3o5bo$3bo$3bo$3b3o!
Common P4:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = R2,C0,S4,8,B5
b3o$o3bo$b3o!
Can use apgsearch to search common spaceship?

Just trying to understand the HROT rule strings. The following Square Cell rule specification:

rule.png
rule.png (109.93 KiB) Viewed 5792 times

translates to the concise rule string in this pattern definition:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y =1, rule = R2,C5,S6,8,11,13,18,B4,5,10,12,16,24G5
3.D$.D2.C.D$2.C2.BDC$D2.B2DACB$.C.DA2C.BA$2.BDC.2B.A$.2DACB.2A$2.2C
.BA.A$3.2B.2A$4.2A!
which is a diagonal ship. It works in LifeViewer but not in Golly 4.0.1.

The rule generates a nice display starting with a random filled rectangle.

which is a diagonal ship. It works in LifeViewer but not in Golly 4.0.1.
The documentation for HROT is here.

The rule above has an extra "G5" on the end which is not needed. The generations are defined by "C5" earlier in the rule string. LifeViewer is ignoring it (incorrectly, it should complain - I will fix). Golly is correctly complaining.

This is the correct rule which will work in both LifeViewer and Golly:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y =1, rule = R2,C5,S6,8,11,13,18,B4,5,10,12,16,24
3.D$.D2.C.D$2.C2.BDC$D2.B2DACB$.C.DA2C.BA$2.BDC.2B.A$.2DACB.2A$2.2C
.BA.A$3.2B.2A$4.2A!

It seems that HROT does not currently support rules like this:

rule.png
rule.png (107.63 KiB) Viewed 5766 times

Is such an extension being considered?

These beautiful knight ship guns use this rule family and cannot be run on Golly or LifeViewer.

To provide some relief from all the rule searching, pattern construction and pattern editing that happens in these forums, here are some pieces of abstract art.

Art.zip
(2.7 MiB) Downloaded 71 times

They were generated by version 2 of Square Cell's implementation of the Larger than Life rule. This version provides a State Weights Dialog that selects the states that contribute to the neighbor count.

I found a way to turn those around, and also a memory cell-ish. I currently have no use for it, but just wanted to show it to you. :)

EDIT: I also found another one. I added it on the right.

Give me a suggestion of something to draw here!

the Lifeviewer for this pattern at url
