There have been plenty of runs of B-ships with B3n removed, and it works really well, but relatively little attention has been brought to the idea of removing B3j. It turns out that this increases the amount of "branching" in the evolution of B-like objects.

This run is considerably weaker than the next, and the branching is not as strong. In fact, the base rule is more branching than many of these results. I have yet to see if removing B3c to clear some of the stray oscillators would imporve productivity.
However, the run brought up two ships incongruous with the intent of the search:

I've just finished updating the collection. There are now 221,311 spaceships with unique speeds in the 5S collection.

I'm sorry it took such a long time, I had several weeks of being too busy to spend any time on the project and it became quite a daunting task after that. Thanks for pointing this one out. This is a part of the reason why it took me so long to update - because my policy is to exclude such trivial combinations, but I'm only able to do so by manually inspecting the updated ships. To make this manageable I'm only inspecting the largest ships at speeds which present the highest risk of having trivial combinations (c/2, c/3, c/4, and occasionally c/5, 2c/5, and c/6). I've also used another script which sorts ships based on a metric related to population and bounding box (the minimum value of (population/(largest Bbox dimension))), but I haven't yet settled on a reliable metric for this purpose and ideally I would be able to fully automate detection of these trivial combinations.

I wrote a rudimentary viewer script for sss format patterns which I previously announced on the Discord. It hasn't been developed any further but it might be useful to anyone wanting to preview a small collection of ships or oscillators in sss format. Available here: https://gist.github.com/apaap/ed5975b4d ... 538fd84b48 and also in the 5S Collection folder on GDrive. Usage: run the script in Golly and select a file with sss format patterns to load. If the file open dialog is cancelled then the script will try to read in the clipboard instead. The first pattern will be loaded in Golly and run automatically. Press 'space' to run the next pattern, 'p' to run the previous, and 'q' to quit.

I have thought about this question but I have no idea what the answer might be. Currently I don't keep track of the max iso rule for the spaceships in the collection, but that could easily be calculated with a few lines of code and maybe an hour of computation time. From there it would be relatively straightforward to find which rules have at least two spaceships (converting rule representation to binary integer and calculating the intersection of the rulespaces for each pair of ships). There are around 20 billion pairs of spaceships, so that should be a manageable calculation. But beyond that the combinations explode and I've no idea how to make it manageable. The only alternative I can think of is to list every rule represented in the collection and determine how many of the spaceships work in that rule - but seeing as there are ships which work in 2^50 rules (and some probably even more), that approach is intractable). Even restricting this approach to all rules that have at least 2 spaceships in the collection would likely be impossible to complete.

If anyone has any ideas about how to determine the answer to this question, I am interested. Perhaps a stochastic approach would be a good start - that might give an indication of the maximal number of spaceships in one rule.

Edit: actually, I realised it's not quite as bad as I'm thinking, because as a first pass all spaceships which have no rulespace overlap in the collection can be removed from further consideration. Even so, I'm not sure how much that will help.

Thank you for your answer. The exploration of Partitioned Cellular Automata here:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4098&start=0#p81873

shows that rule PCA_7 has small ships with at least 58 different speeds. These were found in a few hours simply by observing the evolution of random soups using Square Cell. No search software was used, so there are probably many more. In PCA_4, a related rule, ships with 41 different speeds have been discovered.

A followup to my previous post:

I spent a bit of time investigating spaceships which share a range of rules that they work in. It turned out not to be intractable and a fair bit less interesting than one might have hoped for. The short story is the vast majority of spaceships don't share any rules which they work in with any other spaceships in the collection. I haven't verified this to be true for the entire collection, but it is based on my analysis of all the orthogonal spaceships and (separately) a combination of 30000 spaceships from each of the three separate collections (the first 10000 from each file). What I did was find all pairs of spaceships which share a range of rules which they work in, and than look for mutually compatible pairs. For the subset of 30000 spaceships there are only 91 pairs, and most of them involve one (or two) photons. There are a few examples where three or more spaceships work in mutually shared rules, but all of these involve multiple photons and at most one other spaceship slower than c. In the analysis of all the orthogonal spaceships there's only one spaceship in a pair which didn't come from the first 10000.

On the whole I'm not too surprised by this outcome as the 5S collection is not oriented around rules. This almost certainly even applies to the patterns in this post.

If I am not mistaken they are in China which has blocked google drive. Dropbox too.

Search with a strange ship. The rule range is pretty tight so only 4 ships for a 19 gen match, which seems to be the least amount of gens to preserve it's desired properties, but only gives a rulespace of 2^12 rules.
